Whipping the Music Industry into Shape

Whipping the Music Industry into Shape | New Music Industry | Scoop.it

So now that the music world is done discussing (yet still, at times, freaking out over) profound changes to their industry, it's back to business as not-so-usual. Part of that new normal is a first-time demand to serve the needs of successful bands that no longer have record labels running the show. Among those is merchandise distribution.

YouTube revenues tipped to top $3.6bn this year | New Music Industry | Scoop.it

When Google bought YouTube for $1.65bn in 2006, there were plenty of doubters. That price is looking pretty good now, though: Citi analyst Mark Mahaney has predicted that YouTube’s 2012 revenues will top $3.6bn.

A figure which in his words, is “likely 50% greater than Yahoo!’s Display Advertising total and right-in-line with Netflix’s total subscription revenue. We really doubt whether most investors realize how big/important YouTube has become.”

Metric: The band that became a label - Globe and Mail

Metric: The band that became a label - Globe and Mail | New Music Industry | Scoop.it

I'm at the band's West End studio in Toronto, and Metric is reacting to good news. They've just found out that their single Youth Without Youth had debuted at No. 1 on Mediabase Canadian Alternative Radio Airplay chart – the first time that feat has been accomplished. Much jubilation, naturally.

And then singer Emily Haines has a second thought on the achievement: “What does it even mean?” she asks. It's a good question, one for which I have no answer.

What I can say is what the chart-topping probably means – that someone at Metric Music International, the band's own label, did their job. MMI , as you might guess, is in the business of Metric music. And, apparently, business is good.
