— BPM Bulletin | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it

NoSQL Choices: To Misfit or Cargo Cult? - Programming - O'Reilly Media

NoSQL Choices: To Misfit or Cargo Cult? - Programming - O'Reilly Media | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
Retreading old topics can be a powerful source of epiphany, sometimes more so than simple extra-box thinking. I was a computer science student, of course I knew statistics. But...
Mickael Ruau's insight:

So what’s the answer? Just like the disappointing answers of a billion moms before me (study hard, eat well, wear a helmet, don’t hit your sister), the solution is education, experience, and self-introspection. But most of all:test your theories. A few years ago that advice was a tough pill to swallow. Servers were expensive, information was sparse. But today, everything you need to verify your assumptions are there. A co-worker of mine tried this experiment two years ago: Start up a 100 node Riak cluster for $2. If you’re a company, you can’t afford to wait until production to test your theories.

Sometimes you’re working off of faulty assumptions. Sometimes you’re following the wrong leader. And sometimes, you’re just embarking into uncharted territory. But all of these ideas can and should be experimented against. Try to think of a best fit, including the advice of those who know, then test it your own damn self.

Why you don't want to shard. - MySQL Performance Blog

Why you don't want to shard. - MySQL Performance Blog | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
Note: This blog post is part 1 of 4 on building our training workshop.
The Percona training workshop will not cover sharding.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

So let me state it: You don’t want to shard.

Optimize everything else first, and then if performance still isn’t good enough, it’s time to take a very bitter medicine. The reason you need to shard basically comes down to one of these two reasons:

Very large working set – The amount of memory you require to keep your frequently accessed data loaded exceeds what you can (economically) fit in a commodity machine. 5 years ago this was 4GB, today it is 128GB or even 256GB.  Defining “working set” is always an interesting concept here, since with good schema and indexing it normally doesn’t need to be the same size as your entire database.Too many writes – Either the IO system, or a slave can’t keep up with the amount of writes being sent to the server.  While the IO system can be improved with a RAID 10 controller w/battery backed write cache, the slave delay problem is actually very hard to solve. Maatkit has a partial-solution (via Paul Tuckfield), but it doesn’t work for all workloads.

(Yes, I am simplifying some of the scalability issues with MySQL on big machines, but I have faith that Yasufumi is making this better).

Database access Optimization in Web Applications. - MySQL Performance Blog | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
This is pretty simple approach I often use called to optimize web application performance if problem happens with few pages. If we have “everything is slow” problem looking at slow query logs may be better start.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Look at the information shown on the page which comes from database.

Investigate how dynamic is this information

Check if information retrieved from the database matches information you display

Check number of rows which are used to generate result set

Check number of rows which actually need to be used to generate result sets

Check number of queries

Qu’est-ce que ? : le Records Management — BPM Bulletin

Qu’est-ce que ? : le Records Management — BPM Bulletin | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it

Microsoft SQL Server vs. MySQL

Microsoft SQL Server vs. MySQL | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
Is Microsoft SQL Server superior to MySQL or not? What are the pros and cons of using SQL Server over MySQL? Is MySQL mature enough to compete with a big player like Microsoft and Oracle? Can we fairly compare both products?
Mickael Ruau's insight:

In my modest opinion there is not a simple answer to this question, because we are not comparing apples to apples. Microsoft SQL Server is a feature rich database compared to MySQL however; MySQL's goal is not to keep up with MSSQL or Oracle instead; MySQL’s priorities are: reliability, performance, and ease of use.

So, in my opinion, the answer to the question “Is SQL Server superior to MySQL or not” is: it depends. It depends on the kind of application, environment and budget we have to work with.

MySQL Blob Compression performance benefits - MySQL Performance Blog

MySQL Blob Compression performance benefits - MySQL Performance Blog | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
When you’re storing text of significant size in the table it often makes sense to keep it compressed.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

The BLOB/TEXT column compression is not for all workloads. When your database is small enough to mostly fit in the cache it can cause CPU waste if compressing on database size with almost no gains. Small BLOBs is another case when compression may not give any gains and sometimes even increase the data size rather than reducing it. However it works great for many standard Web application needs – storing blog posts, product descriptions, forum posts (if they are generally long enough) and other data sets.

When should you store serialized objects in the database? - MySQL Performance Blog

When should you store serialized objects in the database? - MySQL Performance Blog | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
A while back Friendfeed posted a blog post explaining how they changed from storing data in MySQL columns to serializing data and just storing it inside TEXT/BLOB columns.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Josh Berkus (of PgExperts) calls this serialization E-blob. Much like EAV, he criticizes this as one of 10 ways to wreck your database (slides). I tend to side with Josh.  I’m optimistic that this design has its place in a smaller component of your application, but I’m weary every time I hear someone decide to switch to it exclusively.

Before making such decisions for yourself I would recommend reading Peter’s KISS KISS KISS post.

Inexpensive SSDs for Database Workloads - MySQL Performance Blog

Inexpensive SSDs for Database Workloads - MySQL Performance Blog | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
Low-cost SSDs are appealing replacements for conventional drives. Peter Zaitsev shows you how to determine if they are suitable for your application.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Depending on your application, inexpensive SSDs might be good fit for your workload, though enterprise-grade flash storage might be a good choice for very write-intensive applications even if it costs a lot more due to a much higher endurance capacity. Make sure you understand how many writes your application does and keep thinking about how to optimize your system to do less writes with SSDs – as reducing writes is a key to a longer SSD lifetime and as such lowers costs.
