Sysbench OLTP: MySQL-5.6 vs. MariaDB-10.0 | MariaDB

Sysbench OLTP: MySQL-5.6 vs. MariaDB-10.0 | MariaDB | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it

This time the benchmark was run on a different box. The main difference is that this box does not have SSD but a high performance RAID-5 with 512M of battery-backed cache. Besides that the machine has 16 cores out of which 12 were used for mysqld and the other 4 for sysbench.

The benchmark uses sysbench-0.5 OLTP with 8 tables and 10G worth of data. InnoDB buffer pool was 16G, InnoDB log group capacity 4G (the maximum for MySQL-5.5). The different disk system required different InnoDB configuration:

innodb_io_capacity = 1000 (was 20000 for SSD)innodb_flush_neighbors = 1 (was 0 for SSD)
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Conclusions:

MySQL-5.6 shows a rather severe performance regression, especially at higher concurrency levels. This does not match the results published by Oracle. I can only speculate why the results are so different, but I guess it's the (closed source) thread pool and maybe the fact that Oracle benchmarks were done on much bigger hardware.with a single buffer pool you don't have to be afraid of write stalls any more. Also MySQL-5.6 allows now up to 512G redo log capacity which further reduces the odds to run into synchronous flushing (MariaDB-5.5 lifted this limit with XtraDB already)

SSL Performance Overhead in MySQL

SSL Performance Overhead in MySQL | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
How much overhead is added by using MySQL's built-in SSL support? Percona consultant Ernie Souhrada compares per-request and connection-pooled applications.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

So, what do we take away from this? The first thing is, of course, is that SSL overhead is a lot higher than 25%, particularly if your application uses anything close to the one-connection-per-request pattern.

For a system which establishes and maintains long-running connections, the initial connection overhead becomes a non-factor, regardless of the encryption strength, but there’s still a rather large performance penalty compared to the unencrypted connection.

This leads directly into the second point, which is that connection pooling is by far a more efficient method of using SSL if your application can support it.

But what if connection pooling isn’t an option, MySQL’s SSL performance is insufficient, and you still need full encryption of data in-flight?

Run the encryption component of your system at a lower layer – a VPN with hardware crypto would be the fastest approach, but even something as simple as an SSH tunnel or OpenVPN *might* be faster than SSL within MySQL. I’ll be exploring some of these solutions in a follow-up post.

And finally… when in doubt, run your own benchmarks. I don’t have an explanation for why the yaSSL numbers are so different from these (maybe yaSSL is a faster SSL library than openSSL, or maybe they used a different cipher – if you’re curious, the original 25% number came from slides 56-58 of this presentation), but in any event, this does illustrate why it’s important to run tests on your own hardware and with your own workload when you’re interested in finding out how well something will perform rather than taking someone else’s word for it.

MariaDB versus MySQL - Compatibility

SkySQL has a MariaDB vs MySQL whitepaper available for download.

MariaDB is a binary drop in replacement for MySQL
For all practical purp...
Mickael Ruau's insight:

What this means is that:

Data and table definition files (.frm) files are binary compatible. All client APIs, protocols and structs are identical. All filenames, binaries, paths, ports, sockets, and etc... should be the same. All MySQL connectors (PHP, Perl, Python, Java, .NET, MyODBC, Ruby, MySQL C connector etc) work unchanged with MariaDB.There are some installation issues with PHP5 that you should be aware of (a bug in how the old PHP5 client checks library compatibility). The mysql-client package also works with MariaDB server. The shared client library is binary compatible with MySQL's client library.

This means that for most cases, you can just uninstall MySQL and install MariaDB and you are good to go. (No need to convert any datafiles if you use same main version, like 5.1).

We do monthly merges with the MySQL code base to ensure we keep up our compatibility and get any and all features and bug fixes Oracle adds.

MariaDB vs. MySQL: A Comparison

MariaDB vs. MySQL: A Comparison | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
There's more than enough reason to ditch MySQL and switch over to MariaDB and stay there.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Clearly the new MariaDB features aren’t all that fantastic—you might have a need to access some Cassandra data, but I doubt you would use MySQL to do so.

A similar argument applies to the other engines offered by the platform.

MariaDB’s performance appears a bit better on multi-core machines, but I strongly suspect that one could tweak MySQL to match.

So should you make the move over to MariaDB?

First, consider the possible risk (the suits in upper management love to hear about risks and benefits).

If you switch to MariaDB, you might start using features only available to MariaDB (which so far isn’t likely) and then find yourself unable to go back to MySQL without a huge amount of work.

But I’m going to propose that such a thing isn’t really a risk, given some of the broader issues.

Consider all the questions around Oracle and what it will do with MySQL licensing.

Free-and-open MySQL competes with Oracle’s proprietary and extremely competitive tools. That alone is grounds for concern—will Oracle do something to impede MySQL’s development? (Some would argue that’s already happening.)

And what about compatibility between MySQL and MariaDB?

The MariaDB team works hard to continue with full compatibility with MySQL, and they continue to pull in bug fixes from the source.

But the new features (and numbering scheme) suggest that, despite best efforts, the two platforms will increasingly diverge.

If Oracle adds some new features to MySQL that MariaDB doesn’t adopt, well, those features obviously won’t be available to you.

And if you use MariaDB features unavailable to MySQL, you won’t be able to switch back to the latter—provided you had any reason to switch in the first place.

MariaDB shows every indication that it will be around for quite awhile, while you can’t really say the same of Oracle’s MySQL.

In other words, even though the new features in MariaDB might not be useful to everyone, there is (in my opinion) more than enough reason to ditch MySQL and switch over to MariaDB and stay there.

(One quick note before I end; some writers in the blogosphere have raised a valid point about service agreements.

If some executive in your company was crazy enough to purchase an Oracle service agreement to help you with MySQL, then you may want to stay with MySQL to avoid all the financial and legal issues that come with breaking a contract.

But aside from that, I see little reason to stay with MySQL.)

Bases de Données Relationnelles - Partie 3 - Méthylbro Développeur Web PHP

Composition

L'archivage electronique : regime juridique, convention de preuve, securite | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
