L'Over Data ou quand la « not so Big Data » devient source de valeur pour l'entreprise

L'Over Data ou quand la « not so Big Data » devient source de valeur pour l'entreprise | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it

How To: Simple database migrations with Phing and DbDeploy - davedevelopment

How To: Simple database migrations with Phing and DbDeploy - davedevelopment | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it

This How To will introduce some simple database migrations to your PHP application. Ruby on Rails is a popular web application framework, that provides a method of migrating (upgrading) the applications database programatically, keeping the database schema essentially version controlled. This allows individual developers to update their working databases and the databases on testing, staging or production machines to be updated with new versions of applications.

TheCakePHP framework has recently developed a migrations library simliar to rails, but this article focuses on using seperate tools to run database migrations, a build tool called Phing, along with a method for creating database migrations, dbdeploy.

select * from depesz; » Blog Archive » How to manage changes to your database? | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it

So. If detecting changes is flawed, what's my solution?

My solution is to work with diffs.

What do I mean?

When I just first start with new database, I make it absolutely empty (plus PL/pgSQL, but it's going to be by default in 9.0). Then I load my “Versioning" solution. And then, I load my schemata.

What is my “Versioning"? It's a set of functions and a table in database, that let me track which patches has been applied, what are their dependencies, and some very simple logic to manage it.

Mickael Ruau's insight:

How does the work flow look?

As I said – I start with empty database, PL/pgSQL and Versioning (I'm writing it capitalized, to make sure it's treated as product name, and not a noun – perhaps you can find a better name for it?).

Then I write a set of “patches" which add basic schema. This might be (in the beginning) single .sql file, which contains whole schema as we have it developed already.

Afterwards, whenever I want to change something – be it add new column, new table, drop something – instead of issuing commands to development database, I write .sql script, which uses Versioning functionality to register itself, check for dependencies, and do the actual work.

All such scripts are stored in some kind of VCS (CVS, svn, git, mercurial, whatever).

Whenever we want to push set of changes to production – we just list which patches have to be applied, and DBA (or any admin with just a rudimentary database skills) can apply them to production database. As long as all changes are done using Versioning patches – outcome should be the same.

MYSQL: make a combination of 2 columns unique | GS Design

Here is a recently situation i came across, what if you have a table and you want to make a combination of 2 columns unique. The columns Individually are not unique, but combination is.

Mickael Ruau's insight:

for a combination of 2 or more columns to be unique you would use:
[SQL]ALTER TABLE user ADD UNIQUE (id,domain);[/SQL]

SymmetricDS

SymmetricDS | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
Database Replication, Filtered Synchronization, and Transformation
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Features

  • Database Independent - Supports: Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Azure, HSQLDB, H2, Apache Derby, IBM DB2, Firebird, Informix, Greenplum
  • Transaction Aware - Data updates are recorded and replayed with the same atomicity
  • Guaranteed Delivery - Synchronized data is guaranteed to arrive at the target destination. If a synchronization fails, the same batch of data will be retried until it succeeds or manual intervention is taken. All other data synchronization is halted for the failed channel only.
  • Conflict Management - Data conflicts can be detected and resolved
  • Data Transformation - Data can be transformed to load into different structured tables
  • Data Channels - Table synchronizations are grouped into independent channels
  • Centralized Configuration - All configuration is downloaded from a central registration server
  • Data Filtering and Rerouting - Allows for localized passwords and sensitive data filtering/routing
  • HTTP Transport - Pluggable transport defaults to Representation State Transfer (REST-style) HTTP services
  • Initial Data Load - Prepare the satellite database with an initial or recovery load of data
  • Flexible Transport - Push (trickle-back data) or Pull (trickle-poll data) changes
  • Multiple Schemas - Supports multiple database schemas naturally through the existence of Data Channels
  • Simple Data Protocol - A fast streaming data format that is easy to generate, parse, and load
  • Bidirectional Synchronization - The same table can be synchronized both to and from the host system while avoiding update loops
  • Primary Key Updates - Captures the "before" and "after" data being changed, allowing updates to primary key data
  • Payload Compression - Optionally compresses data on transport
  • Extendable API - Add customizations through extensions and plug-in points
  • Auto Database Creation - Optionally allow creating and upgrading of database schema
  • Multiple Deployment Options - Standalone engine, web application, embedded software component
  • Embeddable - Small enough to embed or bootstrap within another application (i.e. a POS application)
  • Remote Management - Administration through a Java Management Extensions (JMX) console or REST
  • Remote Database Administration - SQL can be delivered and run at remote databases via the synchronization infrastructure
  • Database Versioning - Specify data synchronization by version of target database
  • Android Support - Independent client that works on Android
  • File Synchronization - Sync files as well as data

delimiter //
CREATE PROCEDURE fill_table(nb_rows INT)
BEGIN
DECLARE i INT DEFAULT 0;
REPEAT
SET i = i + 1;
INSERT INTO t (flag) VALUES(round(rand()));
UNTIL i >= nb_rows
END REPEAT;
END;
//
delimiter ;

Open Database Model

The Open Database Model (ODBM) is an initiative to build very large database models like those of the major enterprise information systems, then make them publicly and freely available as open-source tools. When an organization builds a database or a large data warehouse, a large part of the effort is spent reinventing common data records like names, phone numbers, addresses, product catalogs, charts of accounts, etc.

Mickael Ruau's insight:

Len Silverston, Bill Inmon (the father of data warehousing), and Kent Graziano have tought us that data modeling is both expensive and demanding, whether done in-house or with hired consultants. (See their Data Model Resource Book.) A standard open-source schema design will save small enterprises a great deal of time and money.

Database Versioning Techniques | eHow | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
It's clear from the name: A database is a collection of data. What makes a database valuable, however, may not be so clear. It's not enough to simply have a large quantity of data, such as all the names and phone numbers in a phone book; the data must be made useable by the way you interact with it. As the interface or structure of a database is...

SQL Query : Copy one Column to another column in MySQL | GS Design

I wanted to do add a new column to a table and to copy the values from that a diferent to column ( from the same table ) to the new column. And even though i thought of very integrates query’s at first, the solution was quite simple  ( as always ).

Mickael Ruau's insight:

ALTER TABLE `table_name` ADD `new_column` TEXT NOT NULL;
UPDATE `table_name` SET `new_column` = `old_column`;
