Optimizing MySQL Configuration

Optimizing MySQL Configuration | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
Peter Nijssen covers using the Percona Toolkit to optimize your MySQL configuration
Mickael Ruau's insight:

MySQL keeps its configuration stored in the my.cnf file. In general, you will find the config file at /etc/mysql/my.cnf.

When you change the configuration file, you will need to restart your MySQL server to reload the changes.

However, if you feel like you want to do the changes on runtime, you can use the SET GLOBAL and SET SESSION query. Do note that not all config variables are available to be set on runtime and the changes are not persistent.

Database Versioning with DBV | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
Wern Ancheta explains what DBV is and how one can use it to version control a database
Mickael Ruau's insight:

An important note about this software is that it is not a stand-alone database version control system, because it needs a version control system such as Git, Mercurial or SVN for syncing changes with your team.

NoSQL No More | Javalobby

NoSQL No More | Javalobby | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it

I work at Revolv, and right now we're just about finished with a major migration off of a NoSQL database. We're moving onto a traditional RDBMS (PostgreSQL, to be precise). Many people seem surprised that we, a tech-savvy startup, would be moving to an "old" technology. But in fact our reasoning is pretty simple: A relational system better meets our needs and is more cost-effective.

There are three main reasons why I say this.

Mickael Ruau's insight:
1. Our data is relational

(...)

2. We need better querying

(...)

3. We have access to better resources

(...)

The bottom line: choose the right tool

(...) I was, and still am, a big fan of some of the NoSQL databases out there (MongoDB maybe most of all). But I've found myself more inclined to choose the tool that naturally matches a data model. (This means, of course, that I do the data model before selecting the database.)

Finally, I've realized the value of an established ecosystem. It was fun to write a cutting edge document database using a shiny beta NoSQL storage engine. It was decidedly less fun to write tools to export data, automate tasks, run complex queries, and manage security. And it was downright painful to right one-off programs every time sales, marketing or somebody else needed to "see some numbers". SQL may not be sexy, but it sure is useful.

Q&A: Common (but deadly) MySQL Development Mistakes

Q&A: Common (but deadly) MySQL Development Mistakes | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
Percona's Bill Karwin answers the questions from his popular March 5 webinar aimed at giving DBAs an edge avoiding costly MySQL development mistakes.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Q: Does a JOIN operation between two tables always produce an “access table” on the rows of the first table of the join, or it is possible to define an index (COVERING INDEX) to avoid this access to the first table?

Q: What are the performance drawbacks of prepared statements?

Q: What about using fixed length text fields rather than VARCHARs?

Q: Advice on fixing some of the datatype or character set problems?

Q: Can you talk about index cardinality vs. selectivity and cases where an index does not help because the number of pages read by the database does not decrease by using an index?

Q: What would be the dataset size when you should think about sharding.

Q: And what would be the best choice middleware for the task? I.e. MySQL proxy is still alpha, so it’s not something you would put into production yet.

Q: Would you recommend moving to 5.6 (in production)?. The benchmark numbers looks amazing.

Q: Would also love to hear what you think about sharding plus partitioning, and MySQL cluster.

Q: You said that varchar columns stores efficiently on disk in data and indexes and in the buffer pool. But a string in the SQL layer pads out by using as much space as the maximum length. Increased 3x for utf8 or x4 for utf8mb4. I don’t understand what the “SQL Layer” means. Can you explain that?

Optimizing MySQL Bottlenecks

Optimizing MySQL Bottlenecks | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
Peter Nijssen covers using Percona to optimize MySQL bottlenecks
Mickael Ruau's insight:

First of all, we need to activate the slow log. In the slow log, MySQL will report any queries which take longer then a configured unit of time. Also, it can report any query not using an index.

Activating the slow log is easy. All you have to do is change the MySQL config file (which is located in most cases at /etc/mysql/my.cnf) and add the following lines:

log_slow_queries = /var/log/mysql/mysql-slow.log long_query_time = 1 log-queries-not-using-indexes

Any query which is taking longer then a second or which is lacking the use of an index, is being added to the log.

Les competences Data I #opendata #cyberculture

Via luiy, ILOT PROJECT, Catherine Pascal
luiy's curator insight, November 18, 2013 7:54 AM

How to Avoid Common (but Deadly) MySQL Development Mistakes

"We need a database that 'just works' and runs at 'web scale.'" MySQL software developers are under pressure to do more in less time, and create applications that adapt to ever-changing requirements.

But it's true that some of a developer's time is wasted when their method of optimizing involves trying every combination of code and index definition. There must be a more straight path to achieve the best database code. This talk shows you some of these methods, including:

  • How to find out which indexes are the best fit for your MySQL application
  • How to protect yourself from the number one MySQL database security vulnerability on the web
  • How to decide when to optimize a MySQL database application with denormalization, indexes, caching, partitioning, sharding
