MySQL :: MyISAM to InnoDB: Why and How

MySQL :: MyISAM to InnoDB: Why and How | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
MySQL has a pluggable storage engine architecture that allows users to select the best storage engine for their application and workload. While InnoDB is the most popular storage engine, some users have had to rely on MyISAM for its full text search capabilities, and in some cases, better performance in applications that didn't require transactional capabilities. With the release of MySQL 5.6, those reasons are now gone: MySQL offers native support for full-text search in InnoDB along with significant performance improvements.

This technical presentation reviews some of InnoDB's new features, including Full Text search, and InnoDB’s performance improvements. It will also show you how to migrate your applications and data from MyISAM to InnoDB. Topics include

Portability of InnoDB files (individual .idb files and the Undo log)
Performance improvements with InnoDB Read-only transactions
Impact of changes to InnoDB page size
InnoDB Full Text Search

Flyway - Database Java Migration Open Source Framework

What state is the database in on this machine?
Has this script already been applied?
Has the quick fix in production been applied in test afterwards?
How do you set up a new database instance from scratch?
Will our software run against our database in its current state?
More often than not the answer to these questions is: We don't know.

Database migration tools let you regain control of this mess. They allow you to:

Recreate a database from scratch
Make it clear at all times what state a database is in
Review which changes have been applied when and by whom
Migrate in a deterministic way from the current version of the database to a newer one
Be confident that your software will run with the current state of the database
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Flyway is designed and built on the idea that adding database migrations to your project should be as easy as possible. It is kept deliberately small. It strongly embraces convention over configuration and its API is composed of just six main methods: clean, init, migrate, validate, info and repair.

To know which state your database is in, Flyway relies on a special metadata table for all its internal bookkeeping. Flyway creates it automatically when it is run for the first time. After that, every time a migration is applied, its details are stored in that table. Flyway can then query it to know which migrations have been applied, what the current version of the schema is and whether the last migration succeeded or failed.

Relational to NoSQL: Why Make the Shift?

Relational to NoSQL: Why Make the Shift? | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
The relational data model relies on rigid adherence to a database schema, normalization of data and joins to store data and perform complex queries. Over the last 40 years, relational modeling and query techniques have been well established and are familiar to most application developers. But changes in application, user and infrastructure characteristics have led application developers and architects to seek alternative “NoSQL” (non-relational) database technologies. This white paper highlights the differences between a relational database and a distributed document-oriented database, the implications for application development, and guidance that can ease the transition from relational to NoSQL database technology.

MySQL :: A Visual Guide to Importing and Exporting Data Between Microsoft Excel and MySQL

MySQL :: A Visual Guide to Importing and Exporting Data Between Microsoft Excel and MySQL | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
In early 2009 we conducted our annual survey and what we found is that 66% percent of those surveyed used Windows for development and 48% ultimately deployed into production on Windows. Given that so many users deploy MySQL on Windows for production, it makes sense to recap how easy it is to work with data in MySQL and Microsoft Excel. With the power of the SQL language and MySQL’s RDBMs capabilities, it allows users to leverage the data so that it can be shared by multiple users concurrently, in a more secure, and manageable manner through a variety of interfaces and front ends. For the purposes of this guide we will show you how easy it is to import and export data from MySQL and Excel using MySQL’s ODBC Connector in conjunction with Excel 2007 and Access 2007’s native import/export capabilities.

bliki: OrmHate

bliki: OrmHate | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it
a bliki entry for OrmHate
Mickael Ruau's insight:

To avoid the mapping problem you have two alternatives. Either you use the relational model in memory, or you don't use it in the database.

To use a relational model in memory basically means programming in terms of relations, right the way through your application. In many ways this is what the 90's CRUD tools gave you. They work very well for applications where you're just pushing data to the screen and back, or for applications where your logic is well expressed in terms of SQL queries. Some problems are well suited for this approach, so if you can do this, you should. But its flaw is that often you can't.

When it comes to not using relational databases on the disk, there rises a whole bunch of new champions and old memories. In the 90's many of us (yes including me) thought that object databases would solve the problem by eliminating relations on the disk. We all know how that worked out. But there is now the new crew of NoSQL databases - will these allow us to finesse the ORM quagmire and allow us to shock-and-awe our data storage?

As you might have gathered, I think NoSQL is technology to be taken very seriously. If you have an application problem that maps well to a NoSQL data model - such as aggregates or graphs - then you can avoid the nastiness of mapping completely.

Query JSON data stored in a MySQL Database | Unchi

Query JSON data stored in a MySQL Database | Unchi | FrenchTech SAAS | Scoop.it

If you are storing JSON information in a MySQL database and need to perform a query based on this then you'll need this.

Mickael Ruau's insight:

Say you have a field in the database called extended and within it you store information for Company such as:

{"Company":"Sony","Country":"Japan"}

Then you will need the following to select the Company name from rows where the company name equals something.

$sql = "SELECT if(instr(extended,'Company'),substring(substring(extended,instr(extended,'Company')+10),1,instr(substring(extended,instr(extended,'Company')+10),'\",\"')-1),") FROM table WHERE if(instr(extended,'Company'),substring(substring(extended,instr(extended,'Company')+10),1,instr(substring(extended,instr(extended,'Company')+10),'\",\"')-1),")!="";
