I got some interesting comments on my previous article about unit testing Maatkit, including echoes of my own conversion to the unit-testing religion. One of the objections I’ve heard a lot about unit-testing is how it’s impossible to test code that talks to a database. “It’s too hard,” they say. “Oh, it’s easy to test a module that calculates a square root, but a database? Way too much work!”

I've come to the conclusion that, for me, ORMs are more detriment than benefit. In short, they can be used to nicely augment working with SQL in a program, but they should not replace it.

You probably know this scenario from your daily work and projects, where you want to put your fresh or experienced PHPUnit skills to work and get stuck by one of the following problems: The method you want to test executes a rather large JOIN operation and uses the data to calculate some important results. Your business logic performs a mix of SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE statements. You need to setup test data in (possibly much) more than two tables to get reasonable initial data for the methods you want to test.
The DbUnit extension considerably simplifies the setup of a database for testing purposes and allows you to verify the contents of a database after performing a series of operations.

Relational database management systems (RDBMSs) often persist mission-critical data which is updated by many applications and potentially thousands if not millions of end users. Furthermore, they implement important functionality in the form of database methods (stored procedures, stored functions, and/or triggers) and database objects (e.g. Java or C# instances). The best way to ensure the continuing quality of these assets, at least from a technical point of view, you should have a full regression test suite which you can run on a regular basis. In this article I argue for a fully automated, continuous regression testing based approach to database testing. Just as agile software developers take this approach to their application code, see Agile Testing and Quality Strategies, we should also do the same for our databases.

Richard Dallaway notes about database unit testing inspired me the realization of the DbUnit framework. I think this is a very good text about this subject. Hopefully he gave me the permission to present excerpts from his notes here. The original text is much longer and I strongly suggest you to read it as well. See resources for reference to it. - Manuel Laflamme

Over the last few years we've developed a number of techniques that allow a database design to evolve as an application develops. This is a very important capability for agile methodologies. The techniques rely on applying continuous integration and automated refactoring to database development, together with a close collaboration between DBAs and application developers. The techniques work in both pre-production and released systems.

Google Spreadsheet's ImportXML function is easy to use, and can sometimes look magical. You can use it to grab Web page or blog title and subtitles, stock prices, or movie info from IMDB. You can summarize data, extract Wikipedia table, and so much more. Here is a list of excellent tutorials. Google also has related and useful spreadsheet functions such as ImportData, ImportHTML, ImportFeed. What do you do if the new Google Sheet yield inexplicable errors? What is ImortXML from Google Spreadsheet? How can I use them? What are some examples of use? Where can I find simple and effective tutorials to learn from? Where can I find sample codes? What other Google Spreadsheet functions are there? What do I do if the importXML function yield error about parsing? Try the older Google Sheet http://g.co/oldsheets

Unit testing is becoming very popular among .NET projects, but unit testing the Data Access Layer (DAL) still remains a common obstacle. The problem stems from the very nature of databases: they are slow, common, persistent, external, and relational. This conflicts the nature of unit tests, which should be quick, independent, and repeatable. Looking at the criteria for good unit tests (from Pragmatic Unit Testing in C# with NUnit, Andrew Hunt and David Thomas), it's easy to see why.

A few years ago I was one of those developers who write unit tests for my data access code. I was testing everything in isolation, and I was pretty pleased with myself. I honestly thought that I was doing a good job.
Oh boy was I wrong!
This blog post describes why we shouldn’t write unit tests for our data access code and explains why we should replace unit tests with integration tests.
Let’s get started.

The importance of doing the right test-driven development is to find a good ratio of what kind of code is to be covered…
by automated unit tests by automated integration tests by manual “smoke tests” by manual “acceptance tests” not at all Finding that ratio can be grounds for heated, religious discussions. I will soon blog about my own opinion on that subject. In this post, however, we will focus on the first kind of test: unit tests.

This week at Redgate HQ we’ve been lucky enough to have a visit from Dave Farley, Continuous Delivery evangelist and co-author of the book Continuous Delivery. In one of our discussions we started talking about database unit testing. Pretty soon we realized we both meant something fundamentally different when we called something a database unit …
