Reports on the world’s unfolding food crisis have revolved around the war in Ukraine and the blockade of Ukrainian grain exports. But the conflict is only the latest tipping point for a global food system already on the edge. Jennifer Kwao explains why the roots of the food crisis lie in the structures of the world economy. Only by addressing food insecurity as a systemic issue can the EU credibly respond.

Brazilian farmers are expected to produce the highest volume of corn in history in spite of risks associated with planting delays in some areas, according to a Reuters poll on Monday. Brazil’s total corn production will reach 126.63 million tonnes in the 2022/2023 cycle, up 11.93% from the previous year, a poll including 12 analysts showed. The potential rise in Brazil’s total corn output will be driven by a 4.4% increase in planted area and the expectation of higher yields in the season, poll data showed. Forecasters said the outlook remains positive in spite of ongoing delays to plant the country’s second corn, which is sowed after soybeans are harvested in the same areas. Sowing second corn later means a higher risk of adverse weather events before the harvest. Brazil’s second corn represents 70%-75% of national output in a given year.

North Africa is facing a severe drought. Recent data from the European satellite Copernicus reveal a severe drought in the Maghreb region, affecting countries of great importance such as Morocco and Algeria. The absence of the liquid element is a serious setback for the population of this area, especially for all those most closely linked to the agricultural sector, which is of great importance in this geographical area.

Violent conflict is a major cause of acute food crises. In 2021, at least 155 million people in 10 countries were severely food insecure and eight of those countries were experiencing armed conflict. On February 24, 2022, an armed conflict between Russian Federation (Russia) and Ukraine escalated. As Russia and Ukraine are major wheat exporters, this will aggravate the already precarious food security situation in many developing countries by disrupting wheat production and export and by accelerating price hikes in import-dependent developing countries. This study examines the potential impacts of this ongoing armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine on wheat price, consumption, and calorie intake from wheat. In doing so, it applies the conditional mixed process estimation procedure using information collected from 163 countries and territories for the years 2016–2019 from online database of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The study shows that, on average, a 1% decrease in the global wheat trade could increase the producers' price of wheat by 1.1%, and a 1% increase in the producers' price could reduce the yearly per capita wheat consumption by 0.59%, daily calorie intake by 0.54% and protein intake by ...

The natural climatic pattern of La Niña is over after three consecutive years. A naturally occurring climate pattern that brought upheaval to weather systems around the world has ended, meteorologists say. La Niña was in part responsible for record-breaking rain in Australia, active hurricane seasons, and drought in East Africa. A cooling of the Pacific Ocean, it has ended after three years. Now forecasters are watching to see if the warming El Niño pattern will develop later this year. La Niña is the phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) where waters in the Pacific Ocean are cooler than average, the opposite of the warmer El Niño phase.ENSO would normally transition from La Niña to El Niño every two to five years but in 2022, the waters cooled in the Pacific for a third consecutive year bringing a rare "triple-dip" La Nina. The most severe impact of this period of La Niña has been in eastern Australia, which saw severe flooding and record-breaking rainfall in 2022.

A major UN report recently warned that water supplies around the world are at increasing risk from “vampiric overconsumption”. Europe has been in drought since 2018, according to a recent study from the Graz University of Technology in Austria. Researchers say the water situation is now “very precarious”. Countries across the continent have been struggling with water even through winter. Low rain and snowfall mean already dwindling supplies haven’t been restored during this typically wet period.
