An update to an unofficial minimum price cap on Russian wheat exports is causing confusion among traders across the sector, as there is no clear understanding of whether it exists, how it works or is regulated, or what the consequences are for breaking the rule, trade sources have told Agricensus. The collapse in wheat prices in recent months has created a headache for the Russian goverment, which has been hit by economic sanctions in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine. However, wheat is excluded from sanctions and the country's treasury had hoped to see coffers boosted by good export returns from a huge wheat crop estimated at over 100 million mt. ici pour éditer le contenu

Severe drought is affecting the western Mediterranean due to persistent lack of precipitation and temperature positive anomalies during more than one year, and because of exceptionally dry and warm late winter and spring conditions. Substantial negative anomalies of soil moisture, river flow and vegetation have triggered extensive warning and alert conditions according to the Combined Drought Indicator.
In both northern Africa and the Iberian Peninsula, severe impacts on crops have been reported with reduced and delayed sowing, and well below average yield forecast.
Seasonal forecasts point to warmer than average late spring and early summer conditions over the western Mediterranean. Precipitation forecasts are characterized by higher spatial variability and uncertainty, even if a signal of wetter than normal conditions emerges in northern Africa. Close monitoring and proper water use plans are required, as next summer currently has a high risk of being critical with respect to water resources.

Egypt's annual headline annual inflation accelerated faster than anticipated in May, only a month after it cooled down, propelled by higher food and beverage prices. Prices were up at 32.7 per cent, from 30.7 per cent in April, matching a peak in March. Food and beverage costs, the single largest component of the inflation basket, soared about 60 per cent, the Capmas statistics agency said on Saturday.

A wetter-than-usual spring has caused crops like tomatoes, onions and grapes to spoil because of an “explosion” of mould. Last month was the most humid May in a decade and June has had an equally steamy start, according to the Meteorological Office. Malcolm Borg, co-ordinator of Għaqda Bdiewa Attivi, says the unseasonal rain and humidity of the last few weeks has not been welcomed by farmers.

New report points to likely production increases across most basic foodstuffs, but delicate demand-supply balances allow little room for more disruptions. The world food import bill is forecast to reach a new record this year, though it is predicted to grow at a much slower pace compared to last year, as rising world prices, driven by higher quotations for fruits, vegetables, sugar and dairy products, dampen demand, especially in the most economically vulnerable countries, according to a report released today by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). FAO’s Food Outlook estimates that the global food bill will rise to $1.98 trillion in 2023, up 1.5 percent from 2022. It rose by 11 percent in 2022 and 18 percent in 2021. While food imports by advanced economies continue to expand, the import bill for the group of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) is predicted to decline by 1.5 percent this year and that for net food-importing developing countries (NFIDCs) to decline by 4.9 percent, according to FAO. “The decline in food import volumes is a concerning development in both groups, suggesting a decline in purchasing capacity,” the biannual report from FAO’s Markets and Trade Division warns. “These concerns are amplified by the fact that lower international prices for a number of primary food items have not, or at least not fully, translated into lower prices at the domestic retail level, suggesting that cost-of-living pressures could persist in 2023.” ...

Forecast total grains (wheat and coarse grains) production in 2022/23 is lifted by 2m t m/m (month-on-month), to 2,254m, mainly on an uprated estimate for Brazilian maize. Incorporating a larger carry-in and, with the consumption estimate the same as before, end-season stocks (aggregate of respective local marketing years) are placed 5m t higher, at 589m. Tied to larger wheat flows, the trade outlook is raised by 2m t, to 411m. With an uprated maize forecast more than offsetting downgrades for wheat and barley, 2023/24 total grains production is now seen at an all-time peak, up by 3m t from April, to 2,294m. Despite a larger supply outlook, forecast end-season stocks are seen slightly tighter m/m, at 580m t, due a comparatively sharper gain in consumption, placed 9m higher m/m, at 2,302m. Total trade is seen 1m t higher than previously.
