Work with others on 3D printed projects Cubehero hosts your 3D printed and hardware projects to make it easier to work together with others. I believe with the democratization of manufacturing tools and the distribution of the internet, it's possible to make things that just weren't possible before--things that delight and change the way we work, live, and play.

3D printers are going mainstream, as more consumers warm up to and adopt the idea of 3D printing. The Micro, for example, is a Kickstarter project for a 3D printer for consumers. It was funded in mere minutes. But you can’t start printing once you get your printer. You will need to get the materials and more importantly the blueprint to printout your product.

Creating a makerspace can seem like a daunting task especially when you start to think of all of the unfamiliar elements. I was a bit apprehensive when the 3D printer arrived and wondered how I would manage not being skilled at so many maker things happening in our space. I realized that I needed to be more willing to take risks and make mistakes, especially if I was going to expect this from our students. And I learned that what you don’t know, you learn. At this point, I feel skilled at both using the 3D printer and fixing it! There are a lot of great support resources (like the manual) and YouTube that are there to help you. I learn right alongside our students as we troubleshoot Sketchup, decipher origami diagrams and correct sewing machine malfunctions. It’s important for our students to see us problem-solve and build our own repertoire of skills. The makerspace experience has enriched the learning environment at our school and created a place where students are free to take risks and pursue their interests. My goal is that the maker environment is beginning to fostering a culture of innovation throughout our academic day and beyond.

When I was studying introductory electrical engineering at Columbia University, I was shocked by two obvious truths:1) Electrical engineering is really hard and not in my wheelhouse (sorry, Mom and Dad); and2) There were barely any female students in the course. The first issue was easy to remedy: I quickly shifted my major to management systems engineering which felt much more aligned to my interests and passions. The second issue, however, has plagued universities for decades and shows no sign of abating. Simply put, there is a shortage of women pursuing science, technology, engineering and

While printed parts for humans so far have used plastic, metal and other inorganic materials, researchers in California and elsewhere also have begun printing living tissue, with the goal of eventually employing 'bioprinters' to make customized kidneys, livers and other organs for people needing transplants.

To reach the point where they can start establishing a maker culture in their classrooms, teachers often need to undergo a reboot of their mindsets. American educator Jackie Gerstein makes some important observations about how teachers can change their perspectives and embrace maker pedagogy. She suggests that teachers need to break out of their old mindsets, develop new skills and entertain new roles. In her excellent slide deck, Gerstein argues that teachers need to break out of the constraints they impose upon themselves. She provides seven key areas that need to be reappraised around the questions: what does it mean to be a teacher, what is the expectation of teaching, and what might change? (my annotations included)

School libraries are no longer quiet - they're full of learning, research, and dynamic ed-tech tools. It’s not even called a library anymore. Or a media center. It is now the “learning commons,” a hub for students and teachers. And it is a model that is set to spread soon to other schools, as the boundaries between libraries and classrooms dissipate during the district’s ongoing digital learning initiative.
