A new article has been published in Nature cities by Team Nachtlichter describing the use of citizen science methodologies for monitoring light pollution across Germany,

This is the abstract of the artice:

The image of Earth at night from space, with its constellations of cities, has become iconic. However, our understanding of the source and scale of artificial light emissions is still in the dark, hampering urban environmental protection efforts. In 2021, our citizen scientists used the Nachtlichter app to count and classify 234,044 light sources across a 22-km2 area, primarily in Germany.

We show that such a dataset can be used to translate space-based radiance observations to the more understandable unit of installed lights per km2 on the ground. We find that in German city centers, more total light sources are used for advertising and aesthetic purposes than for street lighting. Furthermore, we estimate that 78 ± 3 million individual light sources remain illuminated at midnight across Germany, highlighting great potential for mitigation. These findings not only offer direct knowledge for artificial light research but also serve as a practical resource for policymakers to mitigate urban light pollution.

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new policy brief (https://lnkd.in/eV-xpT2u) developed by the PLAN-B Project and the AquaPLAN project.

Titled Restoring the Night, the brief builds on the 2023 European Light Pollution Manifesto (https://lnkd.in/ewNjNBnx) and outlines a strategic framework to address artificial light at night (#ALAN) as an emerging environmental issue.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬:
◾ 99% of Europe’s population and biodiversity live under light-polluted skies
◾ 30% of vertebrates and over 60% of invertebrates are nocturnal
◾ Light pollution contributes to an estimated $3.4 trillion in annual lost ecosystem service value globally

The brief calls for action through 10 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, including:
◾ Recognising light pollution as environmental pollution
◾ Defining ecological limits for ALAN
◾ Establishing a coherent, harmonised EU regulatory framework
◾ Requiring monitoring, transparency, and data sharing
◾ Supporting education, awareness, and international cooperation

Since its launch in April, our light pollution policy campaign (https://lnkd.in/dE-76cWC) has received support from organisations including Buglife, the Università di Pisa, the Tyrolean Environmental Ombuds Office, and the Royal Astronomical Society, as well as individuals from over 40 countries.

We invite institutions, experts, and individuals to:
◾ Share the policy brief
◾ Join national and regional implementation efforts
◾ Support the campaign as an individual or organisation (sign the form: https://lnkd.in/dE-76cWC or contact us to get an official Support Letter)
◾ Help disseminate and translate the brief

Read the policy brief and Executive Summary: https://lnkd.in/eV-xpT2u

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬.

We believe that with coordinated action, strong policy, and public engagement, we can ensure that artificial light is used responsibly, purposefully, and within ecological limits.

We thank everyone who was involved with us in developing the policy brief and policy action: Yana Yakushina, Professor Mike Wood, Alejandro Sanchez de Miguel, Alexandre Nascimento, Graeme Sherriff, Michael Lomas PhD, Reinhard A. Klenke, Elena Maggi, DarkSky, LightingEurope, and many others!

📢 Today, LightingEurope publishes a position paper calling on EU policymakers to introduce a harmonised set of rules for regulating Artificial Light at Night (ALAN).

ALAN plays a crucial role in our daily lives, and well-designed installations using quality products and control systems are fundamental to creating suitable outdoor environments. When designing any lighting application, the effect on the natural environment, including fauna and flora, must be considered, as well as the effects of obtrusive lighting, sky glow, and light nuisance. We need to consider the balance between human needs and environmental concerns in a consistent and effective set of rules.

💡 When creating the specifications for a new lighting system, sufficient consideration should be given to the purpose of the lighting system to be installed, so that:

🔹 All light should have a clear purpose.
🔹 Light is directed only to where it’s needed.
🔹 Light is not brighter than necessary.
🔹 Light is adapted to suit the task activities or turned off when not required.

📄 Read our position paper for more details ⬇️

Night for Day, published in Cities & Health. | Leni Schwendinger

Night for Day, published in Cities & Health. | Leni Schwendinger | LIGHTING-Innovation-Design | Scoop.it
Night for Day, published in Cities & Health.

Call it a manifesto for welcoming, productive nighttimes -- for those of us who LOVE to go out (culture fiends) and those of us who MUST go out (shiftworkers). My article is a clarion call to reconsider the after dark hours as crucial and equal to the design and engagement that we reserve for the day, NOW.

This essay offers a playful, and maybe, improbable, big idea for urban heat adaptation. It is meant as a wake-up call to consider the everyday environment of night as a malleable, designable place, one which has been neglected by our cities’ urban planners, public health professionals, designers, and government administrators.

‘Day for Night’ is a classic cinematic technique to simulate a night scene while filming in daylight. Well known by filmmakers and aficionados, shooting during the day is less expensive and less arduous than working throughout the night. Film buffs will recall Dr. Zhivago, Pan’s Labyrinth, Dune, and Truffaut’s multi-award-winning ‘Day for Night’. In this essay, the term is flipped to ‘Night for Day’, advancing night as the new normal. The author means to guide the reader on an exploration of the transdisciplinary city after dark. The intent is to awaken civil society, the design professions, and those who govern public spaces to the criticality of night as a place. A cooler place than the day.

(I suggest reading the article in PDF for columned format - there's a button upper right)

For billions of years, life on Earth evolved under natural darkness. | DarkSky | LIGHTING-Innovation-Design | Scoop.it
For billions of years, life on Earth evolved under natural darkness. But in just the last two centuries, artificial light has rapidly transformed the night, and not for the better.

“Life on Earth has evolved with natural darkness for at least 3.7 billion years,” says James Brigagliano, DarkSky’s Lighting Program Manager. “By contrast, human-made light has existed for only the past 200 years, with widespread light pollution emerging in just the last 75.”

Today, light pollution is growing by 9.6% every year, doubling roughly every eight years. That glow is putting fireflies, ecosystems, and our shared night at risk. ✨
