The festival was created in 2006 by Lesia Voroniuk after she and some classmates wore traditional embroidered shirts, or vyshyvanka. The festival soon caught on with many Ukrainians.

After years of lobbying from the Italian government, a UN agency has now declared the country's cooking culture, as a whole, is a part of humanity's intangible cultural heritage. Gianfranco Junior Spagnolo, chef de cuisine at Vancouver restaurant Cantina di Luigi, says he's proud of the designation. Daniel Attoni, the restaurant's sous chef, says there is a need for the family to be more involved in cooking.

In recent years, scientists have studied whether being bilingual may help ward off the memory lapses and reduced mental sharpness that come with an aging brain.
