Web Dev .NET: Angry Birds of JavaScript: Green Bird - Mocking

Web Dev .NET: Angry Birds of JavaScript: Green Bird - Mocking | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

We are going to take a look at a simple Twitter application that gets the tweets from a specific username. Why Twitter? Well, the Angry Birds have a special relationship with Twitter, especially the Blue Bird ;)

The following application grabs data from Twitter using JSONP. I thought about using Backbone.js to write the little application, but thought that might be overkill to introduce the mocking concept. You will also notice I am not using a templating engine and that is on purpose. Another Angry Bird will be introducing that concept ;)

Introduction to WebSockets

Introduction to WebSockets | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

The WebSocket protocol is a web technology providing full-duplex communications channels over a single TCP connection.

In this tutorial, we will explore the basics of how the protocol works, and explore the tools necessary to begin building real-time web applications without the use of browser plugins and the HTTP protocol.

We will also build a JavaScript Class that will get you started building an Object Oriented library for using WebSocket within your application.

Modular Javascript + MVVM for Silverlight Developers

Modular Javascript + MVVM for Silverlight Developers | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

After five minutes thinking about hang up my boots (well my mouse ) and become a boring Project Manager, I decided to give a second try to HTML / JS, and check if there were any good changes in all this time, I found that:

The JavaScript community is amazing and it’s constantly evolving, there are great libraries available and they have really got the concept of open source. It does not fully depend on big software vendors.Same principles apply: it is possible to decouple user interface from business logic, it’s possible to apply a pattern like MVVM, it’s possible to use declarative binding, it’s possible to implement real life unit testing...Trying to develop in a good way implies a big learning curve. There’s no silver bullet, we must remain as polyglot programmers.

One of the things that I missed it’s a guidance to migrate knowledge stack from a Silverlight Developer point of view. At this point it’s were I decided to comment the idea about writing a JavaScript article to the SilverlightShow chaps, and they bravely accepted the challenge , if you like this article probably more like this will be published in the near future.

Functional JavaScript: Introduction to Functional JavaScript

Functional JavaScript: Introduction to Functional JavaScript | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Brendan Eich claims that hiring him to embed the Scheme language, might actually have been a “bait and switch operation”. But at that point in time Netscape was also negotiating with Sun to embed Java in the browser. Note that JavaScript was for embedding in HTML while Java was for embedding in the Browser. The idea was that Java would be used for component development while JavaScript would be used for lightweight scripting within HTML.

We don't know what actually transpired, but the orders from above to Brendan where clear. The new scripting language must “look like Java” and must be “object based”. Any hopes Brendan might have harboured for Scheme, where now out of the window. We will see why.

The two minute guide to AngularJS for .NET developers

While the allure of writing applications - and not just web sites - in HTML5 and JavaScript reaches a lot of developers, we've experienced that a number of developers are rather frightened by the idea of creating large applications in a dynamic language. In addition to the dynamic nature of JavaScript, the lack of a container-based GUI framework (which isolates causes and effects to individual controls, as it is done in the .NET Framework) and the general overarching flexibility and lack of guiding principles didn't make this environment too appealing for a lot of business developers.

Exploring JavaScript MV* Frameworks Part 1 – Hello Backbonejs

Exploring JavaScript MV* Frameworks Part 1 – Hello Backbonejs | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Increase in usage of JavaScript in modern applications demand developers to write maintainable code, separate concerns and improve testability. JavaScript is a “class” less language and it was not designed to support Object Oriented Programming, however you can achieve similar results by workarounds. So if you are a developer from an Object Oriented Programming world, then you will find it hard until you get used to it. Though there are some DOM manipulation libraries like jQuery which simplifies client side scripting of HTML, they actually do not solve the problem of effectively handling separation of concerns. You will end up writing lot many jQuery selectors and callbacks to keep the data in sync between the HTML, JavaScript and the data fetched from the server and we’re still stuck with the Spaghetti code.

Fortunately there are a few libraries and frameworks that come to rescue. Let’s explore few concepts and libraries that assist in structuring JavaScript applications!

JavaScript MVC frameworks: A Comparison of Marionette and Chaplin

JavaScript MVC frameworks: A Comparison of Marionette and Chaplin | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Marionette and Chaplin are frameworks on top of the popular Backbone.jslibrary. Both seek to ease the development of single-page JavaScript applications. In such applications, the client performs tasks that were typically performed on the server, like rendering raw data into HTML.

Backbone is designed as a minimalist library instead of a full-featured framework. My experience has shown that Backbone can only provide the foundation of a JavaScript application architecture. Both Marionette and Chaplin arose because Backbone is providing too little structure for real-world apps. They respond to the same problems. So there are a lot of similarities between the two – perhaps more than differences.

A JavaScript refresh

A JavaScript refresh | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

We will cover here some of the key concepts of JavaScript to get us started. If you have not checked JavaScript for the past few years or if you are new to JavaScript, I hope you find this useful.

We will start by covering the language basics like variables, functions, scope, and the different types, but we will not spend much time on the absolute basics like operators, or what is a function or a variable, you probably already know all that as a developer. We will discover JavaScript by going through simple examples and for each of these, highlight specific behaviors and approach the language from an interactive developer standpoint, coming from other technologies like Flash (ActionScript 3), Java, C# or simply native (C++).

Serving Backbone for Robots & Legacy Browsers ✩ Mozilla Hacks – the Web developer blog

Serving Backbone for Robots & Legacy Browsers ✩ Mozilla Hacks – the Web developer blog | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

I like the Single Page Application model and Backbone.js, because I get it. As a former Java developer, I am used to object oriented coding and events for messaging. Within our HTML5 consultancy, SC5, Backbone has become almost a synonym for single page applications, and it is easy to move between projects because everybody gets the same basic development model.

We hate the fact that we need to have server side workarounds for robots. Making applications crawlable is very reasonable business-wise, but ill-suited for the SPA model. Data-driven single page applications typically get only served a HTML page skeleton, and the actual construction of all the visual elements is done in browser.

RaptorJS, End-to-End JavaScript Toolkit from eBay

RaptorJS, End-to-End JavaScript Toolkit from eBay | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

RaptorJS is an open-source toolkit for building JavaScript modules and UI components that function on the server and in the browser. RaptorJS promotes modularity, which is crucial to building reasonably complex HTML web applications that are maintainable, easily testable, and optimized. The central goal of RaptorJS is to enable applications to provide the best user experience.

As an eBay project, RaptorJS was designed to be extremely efficient and lightweight. Rather than being a monolithic framework, RaptorJS embraces a modular design; it is intended to work alongside existing JavaScript libraries—not replace them.
