Speed Up App Development with X-Tag and Web Components

Speed Up App Development with X-Tag and Web Components | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

In the last few years we’ve witnessed an evolution in what ‘app’ means to both developers and consumers. The word app evokes the idea of a rich, task-oriented user experience with highly optimized user interface that responds to its environment and can be used on an array of common devices. In order to make development of rich app experiences easier, native platforms have generated many of their own controls and components that Just Work™.

For other native technology stacks, extensible components are all but assumed – not so much for the web. Soon, that all changes. We are on the verge of a declarative renaissance that will dramatically advance app development for the web platform, and Web Components will drive it.

Taking JavaScript Seriously with Backbone.js

Taking JavaScript Seriously with Backbone.js | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Solid presentation from Jeremy Ashkenas arguing that it’s time to take JavaScript seriously. In his presentation he dives into Backbone, design decisions that shaped it and how the pieces fit together.

If you are already an avid Backbone user, hearing more about the design decisions might be interesting to you. If you haven’t really explored Backbone.js, this is a solid introduction to the concepts, and an exploration of the problems Backbone.js set out to deal with.

JavaScript evolves at a really fast pace. With such a big wave of fresh JavaScript technology splashing the web everyday it's a daunting task to keep up to date with all of it. jQuery is the preferred library due to its undeniable popularity, although some scripts are written in pure JavaScript.

In this article we are going to cover 10 useful scripts that will save you some time when solving common problems. Most of these snippets are good to copy & paste but feel free to analyze, strip, mix, share, or adapt them to your own workflow.

JavaScript Performance Tips & Tricks

JavaScript Performance Tips & Tricks | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Some say spending time developing for performance is not worth it when hardware upgrades are usually a cheaper alternative. If I would tell them that spending 10 minutes reading this could save more than 50 new upgrades with simple code improvements that account for a 50x+ performance increase, do you think they would listen?

From rarely used and almost forbidden code snippets to commonly used methods and loops, I am about to show how to cut unnecessary milliseconds out of your JavaScript application.

This is an exploration of Handlebars.js template library when used with Ember.js views. Many of the Handlebars.js tutorials on the web discuss the Handlebars API, but not in the specific context of using Handlebars with Ember.js. In addition to filling that void, I'll also give a brief background of JavaScript templating in general to provide perspective as to the problems it is solving.

The three core design patterns of MVC (observer, composite, and strategy) are embedded in Maria's Model, View, and Controller objects. Other patterns traditionally included in MVC implementations (e.g. factory method and template) make appearances too.

JavaScript Prototypal Inheritance Done Right

JavaScript Prototypal Inheritance Done Right | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

This is all fine but once we dive into inheritance things get messy fast. Because JavaScript uses prototypal inheritance (not class inheritance) we have to manually set up parent/child relationships, and in order to do that we have to be able to control what ‘this’ means during the construction of new objects from the child constructor. This will probably just be clear if I show you the code, annotated:

Writing Modular JavaScript With AMD, CommonJS & ES Harmony

"Learn how to write modular JavaScript using modern synchronous and asynchronous formats such as AMD and CommonJS"

When we say an application is modular, we generally mean it's composed of a set of highly decoupled, distinct pieces of functionality stored in modules. As you probably know, loose coupling facilitates easier maintainability of apps by removing dependencies where possible. When this is implemented efficiently, its quite easy to see how changes to one part of a system may affect another.

Troubleshooting Javascript: humble homage to WAT

Troubleshooting Javascript: humble homage to WAT | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Since early this year I’ve been heavily involved in a JavaScript project, and the fact is that there’s a lot of confusion about how JavaScript passes variables around (the so called pass-by-value / pass-by-reference debate), and if you add to the combo the intricacies of prototype inheritance, evaluations contexts and several other quirks, you’ll realize how easy is to shoot yourself in the foot working with JavaScript.
So, after shooting myself in both feet, and also blowing away my head a couple of times, I decided to try to shred some light on this subject.
In order to do so I’ll present the following articles:

* Preparing the ambush
* Forensic report
* To reference or not to reference, that is the question
* Class struggles
* You start me on – a sane pattern for initializing objects
* Conclusions

The race for speed part 2: How JavaScript compilers work

The race for speed part 2: How JavaScript compilers work | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

When we talk about a JavaScript engine what we’re usually referring to is the compiler; a program that takes human-readable source code (in our case JavaScript) and from it generates machine-readable instructions for your computer. If you haven’t considered what happens to your code when it runs this can all sound rather magical and clever but it’s essentially a translation exercise. Making that code run fast is what’s clever.

A Study on Solving Callbacks with JavaScript Generators

A Study on Solving Callbacks with JavaScript Generators | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

When I first started writing node.js code, there were 2 things I hated: all the popular templating engines, and the proliferation of callbacks. I was willing to put up with callbacks because I understood the power the of event-based servers, but since I saw that generators were coming to JavaScript, I have eagerly awaited the day they were implemented.

That day has come. Today, they have landed landed in V8 and SpiderMonkey's implementation is being updated to the spec. A new era is born!

Securing Single Page Apps and REST Services

Securing Single Page Apps and REST Services | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

The move towards Single Page Apps and RESTful services open the doors to a much better way of securing web applications. Traditional web applications use browser cookies to identify a user when a request is made to the server. This approach is fundamentally flawed and causes many applications to be vulnerable to Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) attacks. When used correctly, RESTful services can avoid this vulnerability altogether. Before we go into the solution, lets recap the problem.

SignalR brought developers an easier way to build real-time, very responsive web applications. But, how does it play with other available technologies? I took a couple of days to implement a very common scenario needed in every Enterprise Application: A DataTable to do CRUD operations persisting changes on a database.

My initial thought was this is going to be a trivial task, I have done DataTables a few times in the past. Then, I realized the real-time model with many concurrent users introduces a few challenges.

Things I Wish I Were Told About Angular.js

Recently I have worked on a project using Angular.js. As of writing this post, it’s a medium sized app (~10 modules, ~20 controllers, ~5 services and ~10 directives) with quite decent test coverage. When I look back, I find myself learning much more about Angular.js than before. It’s not a smooth ride: I’ve gone through lots of refactor and rewrite. And there are lots of things I wish I were told before I started to work on Angular.js
