"The growing number of devices in our daily lives means that we are consuming more and more electricity. This is something that worries lots of people, including me." writes Om Malik on GigaOM.
Turns out the iPad is pretty good : "EPRI calculations show that the annual cost of charging an iPad every other day is about $1.36 a year."
That's a 5x improvement over laptop PC's. Another point substituting laptops by iPads whenever we can?

"vjay by Algoriddim transforms your iPad into a cutting-edge mashup machine, directly integrated with the media libraries on your iPad."
So following up on their impressive djay App, the guys at Algoriddim are pushing multi-media further with the vjay App. What's interesting is that the iPad has long been positionned as a media consumption device while it was expected the PC would remain the creation one.
Maybe not any more with that type of beautiful Apps that could create new entirely post-PC behaviors.

"Tim Cook did a lengthy interview at AllThingsD’s D10 conference last night, and of course he had lots of interesting things to say about many of Apple’s leading products. He had plenty of interesting things to say on the subject of tablets as well."
Should Tablet and PC merge? Are they part of the same continuum? Cook clearly says no as a PC/Tablet would be a bad PC and a bad tablet.

"The accessibility of online stores as a platform for apps has opened a new avenue for parents whose children have autism."
The story on CNN is touching but also shows that this is not an isolated case. And the iPad had a significant impact for families: "I often tell my wife I think of it as Sharia before the iPad and Sharia after the iPad," said Siddiqui - the father whose child story is told - "It was that significant."

Apparently replacing their old laptops.
Some may criticize the cost in the current economic context but if this makes lawmakers more digital friendly, this will be $420,000 well spent.

Business Insider judges the App a Killer one. It's got a nice layout and is neat but it also has new features you might not have expected from LinkedIn such as the calendar integration that connects with LinkedIn profiles of the people you meet with, allowing to prepare on the go.
What's interesting to me about the move is that while the iPad can be primarily seen as a consumer device that's great for media:
1. LinkedIn's weakest point is probably the content so beefing up the reading experience through an iPad App is smart.
2. LinkedIn's primarily a professional network meaning that move and others could be good example that it's no longer the way companies feel about the device.

"Apple has sent out a notice to participants in its iAd program that it will now be giving 70% of the revenue earned from an ad displayed in an app to the developer."
Interesting move but I'm a bit skeptical this was the most urgent one. The main problem author iAd in my experience and talking with other developers is the very low full rate - not the eCPM after revenue-sharing. Not sure Apple's decision can help improve that.

Electronic tablets like the iPad are a revolutionary educational tool and are becoming part of childhood, but should be watched carefully so that overuse doesn't lead to learning or behavioral problems, experts say. As Tablets multiply in schools, it's clear we'll begin to hear about the downsides of their usage.

Apple sold 3 million iPads in the new tablet's opening weekend. Here's how those sales figures compare to numbers rung up by other iOS devices. Looks like a lot of people didn't care it wasn't called the iPad 3...

"With diversions like e-mail, Twitter, YouTube and games a few taps away, the book-reading experience on a tablet is more like a 21st-century cacophony than a traditional solitary activity."
This was the use case that Jeff Bezos pointed to when saying the Kindle would survive the iPad: no angry birds to tempt you away from that great book. But ironically, the Kindle Fire is now also a multi function device and it's not clear to me (and to the authors of this article, Julie Bosman and Matt Ritchel) whether stand-alone readers (aka pre-Fire Kindles) will survive.
So we probably will face a world where e-books are competing with all the other distractions.
Now, is that bad? Is that different form the real world? As the article concludes, quoting a user: “Recently, I gravitate to books that make me forget I have a world of entertainment at my fingertips. If the book’s not good enough to do that, I guess my time is better spent.”

Thirty-four percent of owners of small and medium-sized businesses say the iPad is a crucial part of their business operations, according to a new national survey by The Business Journals.
While there have been reports showing the iPad was winning big with big businesses, this one focuses on its successes with small business owners, who can potentially be harder to convince as looking for sharot term results. But as this Huffington Post article quotes: "Our research has shown that for small business owners, productivity and efficiency, which used to be the central benefits of technology, are now declining in importance compared to accessibility" said Godfrey Phillips, vice president of research at The Business Journals.

Business Insider just published this list of products that are threatened by Apple's latest announcements at the WWDC on iOS6 and Moutain Lion.
It's not the first time Apple's done that if you remember : when launching iOS5, which included reading lists, Marco Amrent's, the founder of legacy solution Instapaper, reacted with an angry tweet. But then he thought about it for a while and wrote about the fact this could help him educate the market. And thefore could be good news.
Time will tell whether it's wishful thinking or not but the broader picture is the take-away about surviving in the appealling-but-dangerous App ecosystem. Apple is ideally positionned to understand which Apps are being the most useful and could the most benefit from being integrated in the OS. And make no mistake: unless these features are niche, Apple's track record shows they will mercilessly integrate them.
Does it mean we can't be successful with Apps anymore? Certainly not. But we need to think about things that Apple can't replicate: content (in the broader definition so including games) and communities are the first that come to mind.
ABI Research on Monday revealed the results of a its latest study concerning the global tablet market, which grew a whopping 185% year-over-year. The research firm found that Apple’s iPad continued to dominate the market, and after an explosive debut quarter, demand for Amazon’s Kindle Fire has begun to slow. Manufacturers shipped more than 18 million tablets in the first quarter of 2012, with Apple accounting for 11.8 million devices, or nearly 65% of the market. Shipments of Amazon’s Kindle Fire “fizzled” allowing Samsung to ship the most Android tablets, although it still only managed to move 1.1 million units

"Back in February The Daily, the first iPad-only newspaper, published a report saying that Microsoft was working on a version of Microsoft Office for iPad, it was nearly complete, and they had even got some hands-on time with a working prototype."
Now would that be a sign of capitulation from Microsoft or just smart pragmatism? The iPad did become an enterprise device after all. The bread and butter of the Redmond giant is being eaten.

Interesting study found by Andrew Spong with an interesting fact on the iPad's adoption by physicians in the US: "Tablets, mostly iPads, are mainstream: Physician tablet adoption for professional purposes almost doubled since 2011, reaching 62 percent in 2012, with the iPad being the dominant platform. Furthermore, one-half of tablet-owning physicians have used their device at the point-of-care."

If you've followed this topic for a while, you've seen me express doubt about the all-App model some felt was to remedy all the publishing industry's problem when the iPad launched. Even recently, I've commented on a great article that forecasted that 2012 would be the year of HTML optimization for tablets.
So this testimony was very interesting to me as coming from a publisher, Jason Pontin, who went through the whole cycle. In my opinion, it doesn't mean the title statement is right (some publishers will still like Apps) but I think it gives an interesting light to the App model and in particular the flaws from: - the revenue model - the cost of adaptation - the absence of link building -the distribution model
Add to that other problems like for instance the fact I now have 70 Apps pending updates and not enough memory to do so (because everyone made bigger App with Retina display support) and you realize how screwed the model can be in the long run - notwishtanding the fact these Apps are beautiful.

It's been rumored for some time. It's now official.
Will it bring more than the expected basic features? Will it make the iPad a good music device?

It was dinner at a fancy restaurant in Boston. After the last sip of Scotch was polished off, the waiter came over with the check... and an iPad. Been surprised by a similar experience yourself? Don't be anymore! This is a great analysis on how the iPad could be the next big thing in POS IT, displacing the antique POS Terminals, a market which apparently highly need disruption offering products "about five to seven years behind technology trends". Somebody's about to lose their cash-cows...
"The device seems to be overheating and reaching temperatures of 116 degrees, supposedly when users are running Epic's Unreal Engine This occurs with graphically demanding titles like Infinity Blade II." I know building stuff is hard - believe me - but I keep being amazed at how Apple underserves the gaming market. I know there hasn't been any historical love story between Apple and Gamers but I thought iOS was going to change that. How can this happen after the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air were repeatedly caught with their pants down overheating like crazy when used for games? It seems gaming is not part of Apple's culture in spite of the iPod Touch, the iPhone and the iPad becoming serious gaming device. Sad...

"As developers hunker down and get into the business of trying to work out how to get consumers to buy more of their product on mobile devices, some revealing numbers out from Nielsen on what people are willing to pay for on tablets already."
Magazines - however - stand out as one of the content type likely ot be paid for. Time to address iPads with a new magazine, longer form format?

Interesting figures that confirm the race is open... now.
