"Apple's tablet market share has dropped to 50.4% in Q3 2012, down from 59.7% in the same period last year, IDC's latest report reveals."
Samsung and Amazon are the two big winners.
"If you’ve ever wondered about just how powerful the iPad is or what you can actually get out of an online school … this one’s for you. A new infographic details how and why you can get a college degree (or at least worthwhile education) right on your iPad."
The iPad as a way to break the educational divide?

"In its Surface tablet, Microsoft wanted to build a device just as good at creating work as it is at organizing it. The hardware is brilliant, but the software is another story" writes David Pogue in the NY Times, regretting the lack of software for the device. Compared to the iPad's 275,000 Apps.
Ironic when you consider Microsoft's original specialty...

"The new Apple iPad Mini will no doubt be super awesome, but does anyone really need yet another screen in their life? Especially if they already have a full-size iPad?"
Good question asked by Frederic Paul on recently rebranded ReadWrite Web (now ReadWrite. Period).
Is the iPad mini a substitution device for the iPad or is it meant to complement it? Curious to see how Apple will justify it later on today.

Amazon today announced its Whispercast for Kindle program that allows educators and business owners seamless interaction between multiple Kindle devices.
Back in the 90's, when Apple was having a tought time surviving, the Education market proved key to their future. Looks like Amazon learned the lesson.

"In advance of the expected new iPhone launch taking place on September 12th, app analytics firm App Annie has taken a look at some of the traction Apple's Newsstand is seeing in terms of both revenue and downloads."
Analytics firm AppAnnie published a very interesting study on the iOS NewsStand. Though it doesn't give absolute figures and we don't know whether it's big yet, apparently the model has traction. Unsurprisingly, more on the iPad than on the iPhone.
Sarah Perez of techcrunch summarized the key figures in this techcrunch article. Original study here: http://www.appannie.com/blog/commercial-opportunities-on-apples-newsstand/

So how do you do some SEO in the AppStore?
As I had a chance to comment before, this is one of the big problems of the AppStore model: while SEO helped startups slowly but surely build up traffic and success by being relevant on the Web, the App model which killed the hyperlink basically removed that option for developers.
Or not.
SearchMan shows in this presentation you can actually do some basic SEO in the AppStore. Their tool actually is deisgned to help you do that so they're obviously biased but this is good reading and good sense. So if you're developing an iOS App, I'd suggest looking at these slides and trying their service (it's freemium): looks pretty cool.

This is Andrew Chen's response to his own post on why the App model is broken for startups.
If you're skeptical about the App model for iOS or are considering an iPad App, I encourage you to read it and make your own opinion.
Reading this, I still feel that while some have obviously been doing damage control, Apps are not an easy win. Still skeptical...

"Stop the madness The long cycle times for developing mobile apps have led to startup failures that look more like 1999."
Brilliant post by Andrew Chen which reflects everything that frustrates me about the AppStore and the drive for super high quality design in v1's when these should be Minimum Viable Product.
If you followed our story, you'll see why this post touches a nerve. When we pivoted to Scoop.it, we moved away (temporarily) form mobile just partly because of that.
The App Store model is a hit or miss while historically, the positive development about the Web has been one of decreasing cost to launch, lean startup theory and pivots. SEO, referall traffic, social also played a role in a lot of "overnight successes that took months to build" like for instance Pinterest's. And none of these exist yet in the iOS world.

Though I don't totally agree with it - namely because of the voice part (picking up a device will always be simpler than connecting a headset to answer a call) - this is an interesting review of the all-tablet case.
Maybe a hybrid tablet + Bluetooth headset combo could do the trick?
But then again we love using our phones with just one hand, don't we?

Study based on 2,242 readers of Business Insider.
The Study has a bias given the recruitment method but it's nevertheless interesting, particularly to observe trends compared to previous ones.
Key take-aways: - Web Browsing is still the iPad killer App, much ahead of App and growing, making the iPad the #1 Browsing device ahead of laptops, desktops and smartphones. - News Consumptions is strong on the iPad but it primarily is done through the browser - not the Apps. - The browser's dominance over Apps is increasing. Time to pivot, Flipboard? - Reading electronic books became natural to iPad users.

"With new tablets coming from Google and Microsoft, and rumors of one from Amazon, Apple’s response may be to introduce a smaller, less expensive version of its popular iPad."
Competition seems to be heating up on the tablet market. But is focusing on screen size the real way to differentiate? It seems to me that there are other criteria that are much more important: Apps availability, content and real independance from PC among others.

"At $199, we'd assume so!" writes Steve Kovach on Business Insider. And he claims to have had reliable feedback from Google that preorder figures were big.
Following Anazon's launch, the tablet market might see intense competition this end of year.

No line for the iPad Mini?
I took this picture early this morning going out of the Apple Store downtown SF next to our (new) office. Coming in, I saw 4/5 people in a line but when I got out, nobody was waiting anymore. It was 8.25.
Is that a sign this product wasn't needed?
Of course, MG Siegler disagrees. But the Apple stock is down this morning.

Apple released an impressive figure at the iPad mini keynote on 10/23. 91% of Web traffic on tablets would be coming from the iPad.
But later on this week, Strategy Analytics firm released some data based on Apple's earning calls showing that the iPad market share fell from 65% a year ago to 57% in Q3 '12 - Android now being an impressive 41% (and Microsoft close to non-existant if you want to know).
So the obvious conclusion (and Tim Cook's point) would be that Android tablets are not that good and not being used that much. Or would that be that they are used in a more offline manner? I could see an argument being made around that with book reading on the Kindle Fire.
One way or another, we don't quite live in a monopolistic market anymore.

"As always, during their iPad Mini special event today Apple shared a lot of impressive numbers surrounding their iOS and Mac products."
100m iPads sold is impressive. But perhaps even more is the 91% share of Web traffic.

This one is by Brydge and yes it looks cool. Like others.
But I keep wondering why some people seem so desperate to attach a keyboard to a device which major innovation was to remove it in the first place.
Some pretty interesting improvements though no real revolution. What will be your favorite features?

"Amazon will make a number of hardware and software announcements Thursday all with the same goal in mind: to convince consumers and the media that its Kindle Fire tablet is only cheap in price..."
Interesting review of what the Kindle Fire lacks compared to the iPad. Mostly hardware-focused. But I wonder whether the perception that the App catalog isn't as great is not also a major factor.

"Apple and four major publishers have offered to allow retailers such as Amazon to sell e-books at a discount for two years in a bid to end an EU antitrust investigation and stave off possible fines, a person familiar with the matter said on Friday."
It's still not clear at this point how this will end up and the article is a bit fuzzy. But what's at stake is interesting: will ebooks be sold under an agency model (where publishers set the price and retailers such as Apple or Amazon take a pre-defined cut) or under a wholesale model (where publishers charge retailers what they want and retailers decide which margin - if any - they want to take; a model some say Amazon used to dominate the market with very small margins)?
I've seen the Music industry hesitate between both models and I'm still unsure which is good in the long run. Some can argue Amazon is using the wholesale model to become monopolistic but if you look at Apple and music, you can also see that the agency model certainly didn't prevent them from gaining huge market share.
So is this really a model issue or a network effect coming from the success of a platform model?

Can the iPad substitute for a laptop when you're on the move for quite some time? MG Siegler says yes (caveat: using one of these), explaining why some of the shortfalls like the lack of multi-tasking can be seen as advantages (e.g. a way to focus better).
Just been back from a trip myself and the iPad could have been all I used if it wasn't for all the videos I took with my GoPro and that needed uploading and editing on the spot (at least in my opinion).
This seems to be a trend as others have been considering similar moves: Robert Scoble was wondering in that post whether his son could make it through college on just an iPad (he apparently was convinced to let go of his MacBook Air but the intent was there).

"After using the Next Issue magazine app for iPad for almost a month, we render our verdict. Is it time to renew our monthly subscription, or say goodbye to it forever?"
An interesting review on Next Issue, the Netflix-like model service that launched last month on the iPad. Can this type of model be a winner for magazine publisher as it was for movies with Netflix or for music like it seems to be with Spotify?

"Rupert Murdoch's tablet newspaper launched with big ambitions and an assist from Apple. But with News Corp.'s corporate divorce on the horizon, it's cutting costs."
News Corp. is not dong very well overall but the Daily didn't seem to live up to its initial expectations, maybe showing that the iPad is not the natural savior of the Media industry some wished to see at its beginning.

"Starting in September this year, 2200 64GB iPads will be distributed to Qantas pilots, who will use them to access operational information instead of referencing paper documents. The devices will replace the flight plans, manuals and forms, and will keep pilots up to date with flight data."
Another airline switches to iPads following Alaska Airlines who initiated that trend that seems to be growing stronger and stronger.
