If you've followed this topic for a while, you've seen me express doubt about the all-App model some felt was to remedy all the publishing industry's problem when the iPad launched. Even recently, I've commented on a great article that forecasted that 2012 would be the year of HTML optimization for tablets.
So this testimony was very interesting to me as coming from a publisher, Jason Pontin, who went through the whole cycle. In my opinion, it doesn't mean the title statement is right (some publishers will still like Apps) but I think it gives an interesting light to the App model and in particular the flaws from:
- the revenue model
- the cost of adaptation
- the absence of link building
-the distribution model
Add to that other problems like for instance the fact I now have 70 Apps pending updates and not enough memory to do so (because everyone made bigger App with Retina display support) and you realize how screwed the model can be in the long run - notwishtanding the fact these Apps are beautiful.
