ICP Science - Revisiting crossed-correlated baths in open quantum systems simulated by HEOM or T-TEDOPA

ICP Science - Revisiting crossed-correlated baths in open quantum systems simulated by HEOM or T-TEDOPA | Infos Lab' septembre 2026 | Scoop.it

Michèle Desouter-Lecomte et ses collaborateurs ont recemment publié dans Journal of Chemical Physics un article intitulé "Revisiting crossed-correlated baths in open quantum systems simulated by HEOM or T-TEDOPA". Lien vers la publication

Excited-state dynamics of open quantum systems is analyzed by the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) or the thermalized time-evolving density operator with orthogonal polynomials algorithm (T-TEDOPA) method when a discrete ab initio linear vibronic model is parameterized by continuous temperature-dependent spectral densities leading to crossed correlation functions, i.e., correlated fluctuations of the energy gap collective modes. We focus on a conical intersection involving two collective modes tuning the energy of each excited state, and we revisit the transformation of the initial correlated tuning baths to de-correlated shared baths in order to reduce the computational resources. While a completely frequency-dependent transformation poses problems for HEOM, we find that in some particular cases, an optimal approximate frequency-independent transformation may be derived. On the contrary, T-TEDOPA is very efficient and allows us to use this frequency-dependent transformation at the price of managing long-range couplings in the tensor chain. An illustrative application is shown by using the linear vibronic coupling model of a planar symmetrical (phenylethynyl)benzene dimer.

ICP Science - Are gold nanoparticles so inert under ionizing radiation? | Infos Lab' septembre 2026 | Scoop.it

Are gold nanoparticles so inert under ionizing radiation?". Lien vers la publication

Coupling ionizing radiation with metallic nanoparticles enables several applications from catalysis to medicine. Development of nanoparticles for therapy requires initial biocompatibility assessment but also the absence of structural or chemical changes during or after treatment that could be responsible for new toxicity. In that context, we exposed gold nanoparticles to gamma irradiation in water solution and followed their surface plasmon resonance as a function of the dose. The initial diagnostic method, sensitive to nanoparticle size, morphology, or environment, revealed alterations in the gold nanospheres upon irradiation. Hydroxyl radicals were found responsible for oxidation of Au atoms that could then be released into solution or redeposit on the surface. Functionalization with PEG ligands was shown to be an effective protection of the nanoparticle surface.

ICP Science - Synthesis of orchil dye from lichens Rocella spp. and its stability on parchment

ICP Science - Synthesis of orchil dye from lichens Rocella spp. and its stability on parchment | Infos Lab' septembre 2026 | Scoop.it

Sébastien Roca, Clothilde Doucet, Alain Tchapla, Sylvie Héron et leurs collaborateurs ont recemment publié dans Dyes and Pigments un article intitulé "Synthesis of orchil dye from lichens Rocella spp. and its stability on parchment". Lien vers la publication

When mixed in an ammonia solution, certain lichen species can produce a red-to-purple colorant called orchil, historically used as a dye in artefacts. In the study of the manuscripts of Mont-Saint-Michel, this dye, composed of a series of orcein molecules, may have been produced from lichen species such as Roccella fuciformis or Roccella phycopsis, both locally found in the area. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the impact of synthesis parameters on the colour of lichen-synthesized orchil. Lichen species and quantities, as well as ammonia and O2 ratios, were investigated based on previous experiments conducted with pure orcinol.
The formation of a purple precipitate, observed only in syntheses based on Roccella fuciformis, enabled the experimental separation of purple and red-orange molecules through sample filtration. This key experiment confirmed the results of the Partial Least Squares (PLS) correlation performed on the same colorant synthesized from pure orcinol molecules, which suggested that β/γ-orcein molecules were primarily responsible for the appearance of purple hues. Using Roccella phycopsis as the starting lichen species led to variations in both colour development and molecular signatures, as investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy and HPLC-DAD-MS. Greater molecular production was achieved, resulting in a darker solution than that obtained with Roccella fuciformis, along with a higher production of β/γ-aminoorcein. Finally, artificial ageing experiments confirmed a higher degradation rate for β/γ-orcein than for α-orcein, resulting in significant colour changes in purple parchments.

Dimitra Markovitsi et ses collaborateurs ont recemment publié dans Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters un article intitulé "Disentangling Complex UV-Induced Relaxation Dynamics of 2′-Deoxyadenosine from 30 fs to 10 ps". Lien vers la publication

We characterize the photoactivated processes in 2′-deoxyadenosine (dA) in aqueous solution by combining transient absorption spectroscopy with 30 fs resolution, quantum mechanical calculations, and quantum dynamical simulations. Using TD-DFT within a polarized continuum model, we map the lowest-lying excited states - two ππ* (La and Lb) and one nπ* (Sn) - identifying five low-energy basins and computing their absorption spectra. Nonadiabatic transitions among them are described through quantum dynamics propagations. The evolution of the experimental photoinduced bands is rationalized through comparison with computed spectra, avoiding global multiexponential fits, incompatible with the evolving electronic structure of the chromophore. The first 100 fs are governed by the Lb - La interplay. Subsequently, the wave packet undergoes nonradiative decay to the ground state or explores the nonplanar region of the La surface, whose lifetime is 470 fs. Sn is the longest living excited state, decaying with a time constant of 1 ps.

ICP Science - Nitroflavone Derivatives Inhibit the Production of Actinorhodin in Streptomyces coelicolor

ICP Science - Nitroflavone Derivatives Inhibit the Production of Actinorhodin in Streptomyces coelicolor | Infos Lab' septembre 2026 | Scoop.it

Fathi Moussa et ses collaborateurs ont recemment publié dans Current Issue in Molecular Biology un article  intitulé "Nitroflavone Derivatives Inhibit the Production of Actinorhodin in Streptomyces coelicolor". Lien vers la publication

Streptomyces coelicolor M145 (SC) is a model strain characterised by its highly active oxidative metabolism. This results in high levels of oxidative stress and the production of actinorhodin (ACT), a blue polyketide pigment with antioxidant properties. To determine whether oxidative stress triggers ACT biosynthesis in SC, we assessed the effect of adding five nitro-flavone (NF) derivatives to the growth medium. As NF molecules are well-known antioxidants, we hypothesized that their presence in the medium would moderate ACT production. The antioxidant efficiency of NF derivatives depends on their ability to donate electrons. This ability is linked to the nature of their 4’-substituent. The Quantitative Structure–Activity Relationship (QSAR) approach and Hammett constants predict the following order: OH > OCH3 > F > H > NO2. The results obtained demonstrate a clear dose–response relationship between the reduction in ACT production by SC and the antioxidant efficiency of these molecules. Therefore, these results strongly suggest that oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in initiating ACT biosynthesis. Furthermore, these results suggest that the direct spectrophotometric assay of ACT production by SC is a rapid, reliable, and inexpensive method of evaluating the in vivo antioxidant activity of any molecule, as predicted by the QSAR approach.

ICP Science - Quantitative FRET FLIM imaging reveals multiple interactions between proteins of the ESYT, ORP, and VAP families at the endoplasmic reticulum membrane  | Infos Lab' septembre 2026 | Scoop.it

Dounia Zamiati, Mouna Abdesselem, Oliver Nüsse et Marie Erard ont recemment publié dans Journal of Biological Chemistry un article intitulé "Quantitative FRET FLIM imaging reveals multiple interactions between proteins of the ESYT, ORP and VAP families at the endoplasmic reticulum membrane". Lien vers la publication

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a highly dynamic intracellular organelle that forms close contact sites with other organelles and the plasma membrane. These membrane contact sites play essential roles in lipid exchange and calcium homeostasis. ER membrane proteins from the VAP, ORP, and ESYT families are key players in the formation and function of these contacts. Numerous interactions between these proteins are likely critical for their activity. We investigate the interactome between these protein families in live cells by analyzing two members from each family, using FRET between pairs of proteins labeled with fluorescent proteins. FRET is detected by Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy. Our quantitative approach shows that all tested proteins clusterize and sometimes interact within their respective families and that their organization at the nanometer scale can be disrupted by specific mutations or domain deletions. In particular, we show that the coiled-coil domains of ORP5 and ORP8 are required for the formation of both homomeric and heteromeric complexes. Moreover, we demonstrate that FRET-FLIM can detect intramolecular conformational changes in response to alterations in the cellular environment, such as variations in Ca2+ concentration, as observed for ESYT1. We also identify novel interfamily organization, including clustering between VAPB and ORP8, and between ESYT2 and ORP5/8. Finally, our approach highlights the broad interaction network (interactome) of VAPA/B and shows how various potential binding partners can influence FRET efficiency.

Lien vers la publication

The electron-hole recombination dynamics of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) is critically driven by charge carrier trapping. Surface traps lead to long-lived electron-hole pairs and play a pivotal role in the photochemical reactivity and the charge transfer at the interface between QDs and their medium. Here, we demonstrate that both band-edge exciton and surface trap electron-hole recombination kinetics can be optically manipulated thanks to Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) within suspensions of donor/acceptor QD pairs. To identify the specific roles of the different radiative states at play, we monitor the time evolution of their photoluminescence decays as QDs assemble, observing in real time the arising of FRET and its effects on carrier dynamics. We deduce that the time decoupling between the cooling process of photoexcited electron-hole pairs (∼1 ps) and the FRET excitation of band-edge excitons (∼1 ns) enables the surface trap states (of acceptor QDs) to slow down the relaxation of the FRET-excited states (induced by donor QDs): We typically observe a 400% increase in the exciton lifetime of acceptor QDs. As the rate-determining step of carrier dynamics within QD-QD pairs, FRET emerges as a regulating mechanism that can be used to optimise electron-hole recombination for targeted application.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are widely studied due to their unique physicochemical properties, which are highly dependent on their size, shape, and composition. Efficient and environmentally friendly synthesis methods and effective stabilisation agents are essential for fabricating AuNPs with controlled sizes and shapes. This study explores the radiolytic synthesis method, a green synthesis approach using ionising radiation (gamma irradiation), and investigates the use of a thermosensitive polymer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), and its monomer, N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), for stabilising gold nanoparticles in aqueous solutions. The resulting PNIPAM-AuNPs and NIPAM-AuNPs were spherical, homogenously dispersed, with average sizes of 5.4 nm and 3.5 nm, respectively, and exhibited high stability at room temperature over a long time. Thermal analysis revealed enhanced thermal responsiveness for PNIPAM-AuNPs, an effect not observed with the NIPAM-AuNPs. The AuNPs demonstrated excellent catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in the presence of sodium borohydride and showed efficient plasmonic photocatalytic activity in the visible-light-driven reduction of 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP). These findings support the potential of radiolytically synthesised polymer-stabilised AuNPs for catalysis and environmental remediation applications.

Context. Cyclopentadiene (C5H6) has been recognized as a crucial precursor in the formation of nonplanar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and carbon-rich nanostructures in space. Despite its significance and detection in the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC-1), the elementary gas-phase reaction pathways leading to cyclopentadiene from acyclic hydrocarbon precursors remain poorly constrained. This gap is emphasized by persistent discrepancies between astrochemical model predictions and the abundances inferred from its radioastronomical detection.

Aims. The aim of this work is to reconcile the chemical network that predicts the formation of C5H6 – a key intermediate in the growth of aromatic species – from gas-phase chemistry with its observed abundance in TMC-1.

Nanoparticle (NP)-gel hybrid systems are multifunctional materials combining the properties of metal NPs with the structural versatility of hydrogels. They find application in advanced technologies, including controlled drug delivery, sensing, flexible electronics, and tissue engineering. Incorporation of metal NPs into a gel matrix offers structural confinement and spatial distribution of the NPs, but the control of the size, size distribution, and spatial organization remains a major challenge. In a recent work, we have shown that silver NPs of controlled size (diameter of 28.0 ± 3.6 Å) can form two-dimensional arrays of long-range order coaligned with self-assembled fibers composed of a biobased bolaamphiphile glycolipid containing a single glucose headgroup opposite to a free carboxylic acid end-group. The straightforward self-assembly of the glycolipid with silver ions in water, followed by reduction, generates a silver NP hydrogel with an impressive order of NPs. The synthesis conditions of this process, which offers simplicity and enhanced sustainability are explored here by using and comparing various reduction methods (chemical, photochemical, and radiolytic) as well as by tuning the nature of the silver precursor. This article eventually proposes a mechanism of formation based on the excluded volume of the side-by-side assembly of four glycolipid molecules.
