A couple of weeks ago I published a video about how to create your own chatbot with a free tool called Acquainted. This morning I discovered another tool for creating your own chatbots. Collect Chat is a free Google Forms add-on that you can use to turn a Google Form into a chatbot. I gave it a try and found that it is very easy to use. With the add-on installed you simply have to open a Google Form then open Collect Chat and choose to convert the form into a chatbot.

Welcome to the Remote Teaching & Learning Lightning Talks 2020-21 speaker series video library. Co-hosted by Digital Learning & Innovation (DL&I) and The Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL), the Lightning Talks are a reflection and learning forum where Boston University faculty and invited guests identify areas of challenge and opportunity and share strategies for engaging educational experiences in the remote-learning environment. In this expanding video library, you will find complete versions of each topical event as well as individual video presentations.
The series grew out of the shift to remote teaching in Spring 2020 as a way to showcase instructors’ many creative and inspiring approaches and to build faculty community. CTL and DL&I are proud to support peer-to-peer learning through the Lightning Talks, as they bring together a committed coalition of faculty, staff, and students to share pedagogical experiences and ideas.
We invite you to join our community of learners, access 60+ presentations, and engage with the video content.

This week I'm releasing a new series of videos covering everything a new Google Workspace user needs to know. The videos will be released throughout the week on my YouTube channel. I actually teased the series a little bit on Friday when I published two videos detailing twenty-one features of Google Docs that all users should know how to use. The two videos were Ten Google Docs Editing Features You Should Know How to Use and Ten More Google Docs Features You Should Know How to Use. But since I didn't count correctly, the first video actually covers eleven features.

Social distancing and lockdowns have disrupted university study for the past 18 months. Students are understandably stressed as shown by a dramatic drop in student satisfaction across Australia reported in the annual Student Experience Survey. Federal Education Minister Alan Tudge has drawn attention to this in calling for a “return” to on-campus study. But the world is increasingly digital. Old notions of lecture halls will not help graduates to thrive in their careers. We need university study that supports students to succeed by preparing them for a digital future.
The pandemic has disturbed all sectors of society and revealed its fault lines—especially in our education systems. The reaction to the crisis has generated some impressive responses on the part of individuals and small groups as educators have stepped up to serve their communities.

On the final day of FestivIL (yesterday), the keynote was from Barbara Fister. Her prerecorded lecture took up the theme of her Project Information Literacy Provocations essay - Information Literacy in the QAnon Era. When it is made public I will embed the video here. One thing that struck me particularly was the point that QAnon (the North American movement that rejects scientific evidence, conventional news sources etc.) gives the same type of advice as librarians: that you should be sceptical of sources, do your own searching etc., which is rather scary.

The role of academic and research libraries as active participants and leaders in the production of scholarly research Research Libraries UK is delighted to publish the results of a major research project exploring the role, and potential role, of research and academic libraries as partners in, and leaders of, research. Commissioned by RLUK, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and delivered by research consultancy Evidence Base, the report takes an inclusive definition of libraries, which includes archives, special collections, museums and galleries. The report provides a detailed overview of the current role of academic and research libraries as partners and leaders of research, their potential to enhance these roles, and the barriers they might face in doing so. The report has 10 headline findings and makes 13 far-reaching recommendations for libraries, members of the academic community, parent organisations, RLUK, and the AHRC. .

Using Wikipedia in the classroom has been shunned traditionally by some teachers because it is written by volunteers on the internet. But it is precisely that crowdsourced nature that makes Wikipedia such a compelling tool in the classroom, says Nichole Saad, senior program manager for education at Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that owns Wikipedia.

The pandemic has changed every aspect of human existence, including the way education is imparted. Regular schooling is no longer the way students learn. Right now, online and hybrid models are the need of the hour as safety is paramount. As a student or parent, the readiness to embrace distance learning is the biggest concern. After all, you will not want to compromise with the quality of education because you aren’t in a conventional classroom.

This project sought to study how much academic librarians who work with open educational resources (OERs) know about accessibility, as well as how they incorporate accessibility into the products of their work. A survey was sent out through email list services in spring 2020, and any librarian worldwide who works with OERs was invited to participate; 193 responded in full. Just under half of librarians said they always consider accessibility when working with faculty to create or adapt OERs, but fewer than a third said they consider accessibility a factor when adding OERs to their collections.
