"The following is the first of a series of excerpts from Glickman’s book iPad in Education for Dummies.
The digital aspect of storytelling raises the art to a new level of experience. The emergence of technology and digital media has resulted in some significant departures from the traditional role of storytelling in education: Stories have become media-rich experiences. Billions of mobile devices are in the hands of people worldwide, and an ever-increasing percentage of those devices contain video cameras, still cameras, and microphones. Whenever anything of personal significance happens, it can be captured and chronicled in digital media that we edit, process, and publish. Within minutes, that moment is available to friends and family around the world. Media has become the language of today."

"Over the decades, students have been required to take a foreign language in high school for reasons that relate to expanding communication abilities, furthering global awareness, and enhancing perspective-taking. Recently, our home state of Texas passed legislation that enables computer science to fulfill the high school foreign language requirement. Coding (defined by BusinessDictionary.com as "the process of developing and implementing various sets of instructions to enable a computer to do a certain task") is, after all, both a language and a foreign subject to many students -- and much more."

People are staring to believe that "coding" is a new foreign language. With this they believe in school where students learns other languages, thats coding should also be a option for them. Read this article for more information.

There's plenty of hand-wringing over how technology is affecting communication, but an illuminating article by Clive Thompson argues that technology may be doing more to increase literacy and encourage reading since the rise of the novel.

Today's students need the ability to do some kind of programming because coding in the classroom includes activities like analysis, understanding, problem solving, creativity, implementation and much more. Our district has started implementing Scratch so kids can learn to code in elementary school.

Coding is an important skill that our students should be able to learn from an early age. There are now several free web tools and mobile apps to help teachers introduce coding to students and to also dispel the myth that coding is done only by a narrow sub category of people with special mathematical and technology background. Coding isn’t just for computer whizzes, says Mitch Resnick of MIT Media Lab -- it’s for everyone. In a fun, demo-filled talk Resnick outlines the benefits of teaching kids to code, so they can do more than just “read” new technologies -- but also create them.

No student likes a quiz, but teachers know that they are essential for checking understanding and identifying areas that need further explanation. Making classroom quizzes more interactive can be an easy and fun way to do the same checks on understanding and comprehension without hearing the inevitable groans from the students. I Love the use of technology for creativity. I dont think technology can fully replace traditional materials - but they add more possibilities avenues and learning opportunities for students to express themselves creatively. These apps are a great start to that expression!
iPad deployment includes all of the steps between buying an iPad and beginning to use the device. For an individual’s personal iPad, this is often a very fast and easy process lasting no longer than five minutes: You just open the box, turn it on, download the apps you want on your device, and go. But for a school, or district, with potentially hundreds of iPads–each one requiring a specialized list of apps that need to be purchased before protecting the devices with a case and sending them out to classrooms. As an administrator or teacher, there are a few things you will need to know before you deploy your iPads Via Nik Peachey

Death by PowerPoint is a popular term. It’s unfair that PowerPoint gets the stick as there are more than a few presentation tools around. As anyone who has taken the pains to make a memorable PowerPoint presentation will tell you – the secret of the steak is in the sizzle. The sizzle also comes and stops at creativity. I think "death by PowerPoint" is used so often because so many users have not "taken the pains to make a memorable..." presentation and the concept of creativity might not have even been considered. Not totally sure what the answer is, but I do believe that if more individuals could have their eyes opened to the potential that PowerPoint has, we might be able to get passed the "death" issue. That means we have to get the great ideas to the teachers and their students... not just telling them, but perhaps showing them...

"Digital storytelling makes for engaging lessons that allow students to create and publish content rather than just passively consuming it. It empowers every student with the opportunity to develop his voice and personalize it through the use of media.
(...) You have a wide variety of options for applying digital storytelling to your curriculum."
