Burnout is old news. The statistics are no longer shocking, nor are the cautionary tales. There’s more burnout awareness in 2021 than ever before, yet somehow people are still just as burned out. The new best-selling book Think Again, from organizational psychologist and Wharton professor Adam Grant, calls on all of us to apply the scientific method when we take positions and make decisions. “Treat your emerging view as a hunch or a hypothesis and test it with data,” Grant instructs. But what does this mean for business? As Grant notes, entrepreneurs and leaders are typically celebrated “for being strong-minded and clear-sighted. They're supposed to be paragons of conviction: decisive and certain.” But research shows that those who are willing to test out their assumptions, change their minds, and pivot from their original

When one of your direct reports has the courage to talk with you about their mental health condition, how you respond is critical. You want the person to know you appreciate them sharing while also reassuring them that their job and your perception of them are not at risk. At the same time, you need to figure out what impact, if any, this will have on your team and their workload.

But a lot of the time, burnout is a product of the organization, not the person, and the kind of burnout facing most companies today runs deep. While meditation and mindfulness might help for an hour, treating the symptoms won’t fix the underlying cause.

Cross-trained employees stay. The annual turnover rate among part-time store employees was 76% in 2019, according to research by Korn Ferry. Higher wages are helping reduce turnover, but they also are becoming a competitive requirement as more retailers, including Costco and Amazon, hike their minimums. As a result, benefits such as training for upward mobility are gaining importance among recruiting retailers. Trader Joe’s, for example, trains its staff to perform all store tasks, from cleaning aisles to cashing out customers. This helps prevent boredom, exposes workers to a wider range of customer opportunities (and pain points) and invites feedback from a variety of thinkers. Employees also are expected to taste new products, so they can answer questions about what they sell. These efforts contribute to why Trader Joe’s is in the top 5% of similar-sized companies for employee retention, according to Comparably, which rates company cultures.
