A recent report from two major research groups have identified a direct relationship between processed meat — including sausage, bacon, and deli meats — to cancer. This topic was also discussed just last October, when the World Health Organization released a paper claiming that the consumption of processed meats is linked with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. In this new report, the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) and the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) discover a connection between consuming processed meat and developing cancer in the lower stomach. The risk factor matched those found in the previous WHO; the grams and percentages for eating processed meat and developing lower-stomach cancer as the WHO had found for eating processed meat and developing colorectal cancer were the same.
R- The writer of the article is a journalist named Erin Brodwin. There is not enough information to suggest reliability or unreliability of the article solely based on her. The sources she used, however, are all major research groups/organizations. The WHO has high credibility and is known for adhering to scientific principles. However, the AICR and the WCRF have both been investigated due to suspicions that diet politics corrupted their study; this may suggest unreliability. A- Both the research groups and organization used as sources have the position to know what they’re talking about; their teams consist of educated doctors/experts in the fields of diet and cancer. However, it is not guaranteed that the research groups’ observations can be trusted due to possible corruption and vested interests. V- Though it was not mentioned in the article, the studies conducted by the World Cancer Research Fund is said to be flawed because of what they excluded. It is suspected that, out of the many studies conducted, the WCRF did not include the results of their largest study, which did not find any association when examining the link between colorectal cancer and red and processed meat consumption. The no-linkage results go against the nutritional beliefs of Harvard’s School of Public Health, one of whose figures - Dr. Walter Willett - has advocated for the limitation of red meat and who is also board member of the World Cancer Research Fund. This can suggest experimenter bias and/or a vested interest against the meat industry. E- The sources do have the expertise knowledge demanded for the studies; the experimenters consisted of educated and well-versed professionals on the subject. N- The research group’s possible corruption was not mentioned in the article, which may suggest that the writer of the article, Erin Brodwin, may have a personal bias against processed meats. |
