Pin Ups

Pin Ups | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

[F]rom the 1920s to the 1970s, certain artists—including Alberto Vargas, George Petty, Gil Elvgren, Earl Moran, and Zoë Mozert—made their careers painting “pin-up” girls exclusively. This Golden Age of the pin-up art lasted until color photography took its place.

Artist Rachelle Beaudoin on Kathleen Hanna's "Slut" proclamation and co-opted sexuality

Artist Rachelle Beaudoin on Kathleen Hanna's "Slut" proclamation and co-opted sexuality | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

Artist Rachelle Beaudoin examines the female identity in popular culture using commercial icongraphy. Challenging what is presented as mainstream feminine sexuality, Beaudoin's take on figure-shaping and labeling is as jarring as it is thought-provoking.

This is what happens with most flyers and promotional pieces of paper that are handed out on the streets, put on windsheilds, etc. The fact that it's about selling sex makes me take pause...This appears to be one case where erotic images of women involved in sex work are actually adding value and humanizing the advertisements. Food for thought.

Alina Szapocznikow: A Body Of Work

Alina Szapocznikow: A Body Of Work | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

The Polish sculptor would survive the Holocaust, tuberculosis, and breast cancer — only to succumb to her battle with tuberculosis at the age of 47.  Clearly Szapocznikow new pain. But not only pain in the sense of torture, inhumanity, and disease; even pain in the more average range of human experience, such as the dis-ease of exploitation and objectification, are exposed and supposed in her works. And all in a complete range of emotion, from outrage to irony — always with a sensuality that nearly stupefies it is so astonishing.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Not safe for work (mainly for ads/images on sidebar -- but even nude art is banned most places now), but worthy to see/read.

Egypt won't rent Pyramids to foreign firms, says antiquities ministry

Egypt won't rent Pyramids to foreign firms, says antiquities ministry | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

The Egyptian antiquities ministry has rejected a proposal by the finance ministry to rent out the country's major archaeological sites to international tourism companies in an attempt to reduce the government's budget deficit.

Some archaeologists have called the proposal 'insulting' and 'humiliating.'

Deanna Dahlsad's curator insight, March 1, 2013 7:54 PM

When austerity goes too far... Talk about a true proposed sell-out! This would have been far worse than the use of a Beatles song in a commercial or something.

The Burned and Bloodied Sex Workers of South Mumbai

The Burned and Bloodied Sex Workers of South Mumbai | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

An estimated 100,000 sex workers currently earn a living working in the brothels of South Mumbai’s red-light districts. Most of them are not there voluntarily, but rather, have been sold into sex work, sometimes by a relative or trusted family friend. Some are born into it. Life within the red-light districts isn't easy. In fact, it's pretty much like living in a giant toilet bowl full of syringes and awful people. These women live on the fringes of a society defined by the unrelenting harshness of its edges. They are frowned upon and ignored.

I began my photo essay on a group of sex workers based in the red-light districts of Kamathipura, Falkland Road, and Worli. The prostitutes work with Social Activities Integration (SAI), a small NGO modeled on the Didi ("Sister") Project. These women take what they learn about HIV, STDs, and women's rights back to their communities and teach others about the importance of condoms and HIV testing, giving them a sense of purpose and self-respect—in addition to helping them reduce the risk of sexual disease.

After getting to know some of the women, I felt the need to make my project more personal, in order to tell their stories. Obviously, each of them was a sister, a mother, or a daughter, not just a sex worker. I looked to create images of intimacy, femininity, and tenderness that would contrast with the often brutal reality of their lives. I wanted the viewer to gain insight into the lives of these women. This set of photographs is a selection focusing on violence against these women, taken from my project ,The Sisters of Kamathipura.

Body Image In Art, Porn & Media - Sex~Kitten.net

Body Image In Art, Porn & Media - Sex~Kitten.net | For Art's Sake-1 | Scoop.it

Much is written on the effects of porn and female body image. Some complain fearfully of men who will, upon viewing porn, expect all women to have those bodies; others that women themselves fall into this trap and try to emulate such unrealistic things with their own bodies. Of course, these accusations and reservations aren't only reserved for pornographic materials, but magazines, television, any media.

And while you may think that I'm going to rant about how stupid this is, how silly it is to believe that people will be so affected by these images that they'd let ~ no force ~ them to be their realities, I'm not.
