August 12 – The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) has launched legal action against the English Football League (EFL) over new wage controls in League One, reviving a dispute the players’ union has fought before. The row centres on changes approved in May for the 2026/27 season, which cut the proportion of turnover League One clubs can spend on wages from 60% to 50%.

October 2 – Manchester City should face the “appropriate consequences” if wrongdoing is established, a spokesperson for British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Thursday, clarifying earlier remarks from the PM. Burnham’s remarks came as club the formally appealed the independent commission’s verdict saying that the ruling contained “clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe”. Still claiming that they are innocent of breaking the financial regulation, the club said it had filed “a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence [that] exists in support of all of its positions”

September 30 – The Premier League has confirmed that Manchester City have been found guilty of more than 100 charges of breaches of Premier League financial rules between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons. An independent Commission found that Manchester City arranged ‘sham’ contracts (which misrepresented the true agreement between the parties) with a number of its commercial partners, as well as relying on ‘sham’ agreements with others, to artificially inflate the club’s revenues and reduce its costs.
