What can we learn from this deal?
If there is one big “a-ha” from this transaction, it is a sign of Priceline’s continued aggressiveness in building out the most robust travel portfolio on the planet.
Previous acquisitions for Priceline, including Booking.com and ActiveHotels, have focused on hospitality and have been in the $100 million range. Kayak is a meaningful departure from that for sure.

Treovi claims to be the world’s first 100% commission-free Web-based hotel reservation platform. The Swiss startup launched in closed beta at the beginning of the summer, and officially opened a couple of weeks back for hotel registrations, though it had started signing up hotels from early July. Treovi is free for hotels to register and upload their inventory, while it’s also free for guests to search, find and book hotels. The company verifies and approves the entries made by the hoteliers, who are given access to an administration panel where they can complete the relevant hotel information, including hotel description, photos, and setting up room availability and rate types.

In the old days, it was easy to understand the customer experience. You had your manager or salespeople walk around. You asked or incentivized your customers to complete comment cards or surveys. Then you added in mystery shopping. All good sources of information about the customer experience. But that won’t suffice anymore. Today, as we know, you have to think about your online reputation and what your customers are saying about you in social media.

The shift from desktop-only towards the use of multiple devices to access the Internet has radically changed how consumers engage with digital content and when they choose to do it. In this whitepaper Google has seen evidence that usage behavior varies by device, which in turn has made the travel-purchasing process highly complex and therefore challenging for advertisers to fully grasp and benefit from. Priceline sees its pending acquisition of Kayak as a great financial proposition in its own right, as well as a way to bring on board a stellar technical/mobile team to share expertise with Priceline's team, and the converse, as well. The deal marks the first time that Priceline has entered the metasearch, travel planning and advertising business, all of which it has historically seen as a distraction to its core business of getting consumers to consummate bookings and transactions. Kayak will be operated as a separate brand, much in the way that the group’s Priceline.com, Booking.com, Agoda, and CarRentals.com are operated, with each unit’s management having considerable independence.

What is the correlation between your social strategy and website traffic? The answers can be found by benchmarking social media data. How much of the average DMO’s website traffic is generated by social media? Some, but not a lot. As a general statement, most social media traffic comes from four sources: Facebook, TripAdvisor, Twitter and Pinterest. Yes, there are other sources, and yes, specific DMOs may receive a disproportional amount of traffic from YouTube, but on average, your social traffic is coming from one of those four sources. On average, 2-7% of total website visits are generated directly from social media. Meaning the click came from a social post, tweet or link to your website.

However, it’s clear that the importance of social signals is increasing with time, and that begs several questions....

As travelers increasingly take their transactions online, the direct online channel has grown into the most important avenue for hoteliers to utilize to achieve the highest ROIs. This push toward digital is continuing into 2013, as hoteliers plan to allocate a large portion of their budgets toward their website in 2013, according to a HeBS Digital Industry Pulse Poll performed last month. According to the HeBS Digital Industry Pulse Poll results, hoteliers overwhelmingly chose the property website when asked which digital marketing initiatives they would most like to budget for in the coming year. Hoteliers also cast votes for initiatives such as SEM (paid search), SEO, Social Media, mobile marketing and others.
