An Ernst & Young (EY) survey finds 86 percent of employees believe empathetic leadership boosts morale and 87 percent see empathy as essential to fostering an inclusive environment. Many, however, feel their own employer’s efforts of this kind are disingenuous.
According to the survey taken last fall of more than 1,000 employed U.S. workers:
Fifty-two percent currently believe their company’s efforts to be empathetic toward employees are dishonest, up from 46 percent in 2021; Forty-seven percent believe their company lacks follow-through when it comes to company promises, up from 42 percent in 2021. Now, I have lived several years practicing empathy in my daily life, and I can tell you I am better because of it. I believe the people around me are, too. And if I, a trained engineer with few natural empathetic tendencies, can learn to be empathetic, anyone can.
My empathy journey began with my interaction with a stranger who became my mentor and friend, Dr. Ian Roberts. He was the first person to cause me to consider empathy as something that might hold value—but that consideration didn’t happen overnight. But how do you get to that foundation of trust and collaboration in the first place? Quite often, it comes down to empathy — or the ability to detect and understand the feelings of others.
Empathy is often confused with sympathy, but it goes so much deeper than that. Sympathy is essentially a sense of pity when someone else is distressed. Empathy, on the other hand, is seeking to truly understand what another person feels, and demonstrate the compassion and understanding they need to feel valued and appreciated.

Empathetic leadership is nothing new, but in the wake of Covid-19, it has taken on fresh significance – and the benefits to business are compelling While nobody would argue the Covid-19 pandemic was anything but terrible, we can say some things changed for the better when it comes to work. The necessity to work from home, for example, has delivered more balance and flexibility for employees. While pandemic-induced employee burnout has made mental health support a workplace issue.
Challenges like this are where an empathetic leader can truly thrive. Cheryl Fields Tyler, founder and CEO of California-based Blue Beyond Consulting, a management consulting firm that works with mainly Fortune 500 firms, says the pandemic thrust all of us into situations where we were suddenly in each other’s lives in ways we had never been before.

On Being Empathetic Now, let’s move on to empathy. I think most people would agree that empathizing means understanding someone’s situation and being sensitive to it. In some cases, it means you’ve been in virtually the same set of circumstances and know exactly what it’s like. Of course, knowing what empathy is and being empathetic are two different things. According to EY, 52% of employees currently believe their company’s efforts to be empathetic toward employees are dishonest―up from 46% in 2021, and employees increasingly report a lack of follow-through when it comes to company promises (47% compared to 42% in 2021).
While leaders may not intend to come across as empathetically dishonest, it’s their employees’ perceptions that count. To avoid being lumped into the leadership category of performative hypocrites, empathy should be thought of as a skill that can be developed and practiced daily. As Catalyst’s Hariton shared, “A lot of people think that you're either born empathetic, or if you're not, your mother taught you to be empathetic. Empathy has quickly become the new leadership buzzword. Some experts even debate the effectiveness of empathy versus compassion.
My work in the field of human care and connection began after a long career in corporate business development. In the aftermath of the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, I served the school and community for five years. During that time, I observed that those hurting hurt even more when people around them don’t know how to adequately support them. Leading with empathy means building a team that gets what you want to bring to society, says Spio. “There’s just so much you can do with your life, so if you’ve decided to build a company or contribute value to the world, find those people who are vision- and mission-aligned.” That includes funders, too. Maloney says, “Instead of fighting to be at the table of either this VC or that investor, or whatever, because of whatever name recognition they have, even though they might not believe in that mission—step away and say, ‘I’m actually going to say no to that until I can find the people who really want to rock with me.’”

How Can Leaders Grow Their Capacity for Empathy? Empathy is an active trait. Though almost everyone can empathize with others, putting it into practice takes intention and work. Thankfully, empathy works like a muscle. The more you exercise it, the stronger it’ll get. To become a more empathetic leader, try incorporating these methods:
Practice active listening. Active listening means paying close attention to your tone and body language, asking good questions, not interrupting, and carefully considering what the other person is saying before you speak.
Be present. You can’t be empathetic if you aren’t paying attention. Avoid distractions and concentrate on fully interacting with someone. Take a break from checking your watch or phone and remain in the moment.

Empathetic leadership Leading with empathy and trust is a vastly overlooked skill. Knowing our people, understanding our team members, identifying with them and learning what inspires them. These are all vitally essential leadership traits.
Empathetic and trusting leadership is about showing you care and creating trust within your team…. trust builds an empowering, honest relationship with your colleagues. It opens the door for all to reach their full or unlimited potential. It breeds a culture of trust and inspiration across the team and the business.

Empathy is understanding and relating to what another person is feeling, thinking or experiencing. The proverb about walking a mile in someone else’s shoes doesn’t mean you must agree with their point of view. Instead, it’s about being willing and able to appreciate what they are going through.

Look, our democracy isn’t perfect. It always has been. Notwithstanding those folks you hear on the other side there. They’re entitled to be outrageous. This is a democracy.
