About UDL

About UDL | ED262 mylineONLINE: Exceptionalities and Accessibilities | Scoop.it

What is Universal Design for Learning?

"Universal Design for Learning is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn. UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work for everyone--not a single, one-size-fits-all solution but rather flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs."

Roberto Silva's curator insight, October 23, 2016 2:42 PM

Sometimes one might think providing assistive technology is a fast solution, however one has to know how to implement it.  For example a common type of assistive technology can be speech to text software.  Many speech to text software platforms exist, one as the provider has to be knowledgeable in terms of the disability one is combating and if the specific software will work for it.  Different software contains different features, features that can make a difference in learning.  It is our responsibility to be aware of what is being used and how it is being used.

Do I Have to Go to the IEP Meeting

Do I Have to Go to the IEP Meeting | ED262 mylineONLINE: Exceptionalities and Accessibilities | Scoop.it
Am I required to attend IEP meetings if I am not a Special Education teacher? I've been asked that more than once as the Special Education teacher, and especially as a Resource Specialist, also known as Special Academic Instructor. The answer in our state is that at least one general education teacher who has the student on his/her caseload needs attend any IEP (Individualized Education Program) whether it be qualifying (evaluating to see if the student will enter Special Education), annual (the once a year assessment), triennial (every third year the educational psychologist also assesses), or an addendum which is called for a unique reason at any time. However, the better school sites have the entire teaching team there. The teachers at my middle school were very dedicated (and wanted to keep their positions) and supported the Special Ed. kids very effectively with attendance.

Is the biggest learning disability an emotional one? - The Hechinger Report | ED262 mylineONLINE: Exceptionalities and Accessibilities | Scoop.it
Neuropsychologist David Rose spent years helping kids with learning disabilities participate in school by creating digital textbooks with pop-up graphics, text-to-speech, flexible fonts and other customizable features to fit individual needs. The books were so engaging “that traditional books started to look relatively disabled by comparison,” says Rose, co-founder and chief education officer of CAST …
Ruth Virginia Barton's curator insight, September 29, 2015 10:13 AM
How the brain works is closely associated with how we feel - believe it or not! And how kids feel in school directly affects their ability - and willingness - to learn. CAST (Center for Applied Technology) members found that "the number one challenge for UDL, isn’t physical or cognitive, it’s emotional—turning around kids who are turned off by school." They accepted how kids were feeling and applied technology to make their classrooms absolutely engaging to their students!

(Website). A showcase and awards site featuring accessible, usable, universal, standards-compliant, and stunningly designed web sites..."Accessibility is of great concern in the creation of a truly universal site. After all, if a web site’s content cannot be accessed, it’s not a very good website to that person or group. One example: Let’s say a page bears meaningful text-content in a image. If that image isn’t visible or readable, and if alternate text isn’t provided, the content will be lost. It might be just fine for you, but for others it may be quite difficult to deal with. We like to see sites meeting a minimum Priority 1 Accessibility Checkpoint rating."

Ways Universal Design for Learning Can Benefit All Types of Learners - Five UDL Tips for Teachers

Ways Universal Design for Learning Can Benefit All Types of Learners - Five UDL Tips for Teachers | ED262 mylineONLINE: Exceptionalities and Accessibilities | Scoop.it

The authors of this excellent article on how UDL can benefit all types of learners present a universal design lesson for educators:

"If we think about and plan the best way to deliver the information for all students, not only will our instruction improve but it will also be accessible to everyone in the classroom.

For UDL to be both effective and properly implemented, the practitioner needs to know the difference between accommodating and modifying learning."  They illustrate this distinction through a fishing tale.

They go on to describe 5 effective UDL Tips for Teachers that when used effectively as accomodations will cultivate a group of learners capable of experienceing success beyond the classroom.

1. Provide digital notes

2. Use screen readers/audio books

3. Allow extra time

4. Use noise-reducing technology

5. Differentiate assessments

German teenagers create eye-movement controlled wheelchair with help of 3D printing ^ www.3ders.org | ED262 mylineONLINE: Exceptionalities and Accessibilities | Scoop.it
While we’ve seen how much of an impact 3D printing has had in the medical industry for its ability to create prosthetic devices or even surgical parts, it appears as though we are already moving into a phase where creating 3D printed bionic prosthetics and other medical assistance aids might become the new normal - thanks to a handful of inspired makers who have been deciphering how to include low-cost tech into the already low-cost 3D printed devices.

Among others, fourteen-year-old Myrijam Stoetzer and fifteen-year-old Paul Foltin have been actively developing a solution for helping those bound to wheelchairs with limited mobility be able to control their wheelchair through the use of eye movement alone - similar to a costly device that physicist Stephen Hawking uses.

To create the prototype for the device, the team started by soldering a webcam and SMD-LEDs onto a pair of safety glasses.  A filter inside of the webcam was modified to only bypass IR light to make it independent from other light sources within the environment - which would allow for the light to be lit by the attached SMD-LEDs only
