Three Things Students Can Do Now to Promote Open Access | ED 262 KCKCC Sp '25 | Scoop.it
The open access movement is a long-standing campaign in the world of research to make scholarly works freely available and reusable. One of its fundamental premises is that the progress of knowledge and culture happens scholarly works of all kinds are widely shared, not hidden in ivory towers built with paywalls and shorn by harsh legal regimes.

25 Reading Strategies That Work In Every Content Area | ED 262 KCKCC Sp '25 | Scoop.it

"Reading is reading. By understanding that letters make sounds, we can blend those sounds together to make whole sounds that symbolize meaning we can all exchange with one another.

Without getting too Platonic about it all, reading doesn’t change simply because you’re reading a text from another content area. Only sometimes it does.

Science content can often by full of jargon, research citations, and odd text features.

Social Studies content can be an interesting mix of itemized information, and traditional paragraphs/imagery..."

Top 11 Trusted (And Free) Search Engines For Scientific and Academic Research

Top 11 Trusted (And Free) Search Engines For Scientific and Academic Research | ED 262 KCKCC Sp '25 | Scoop.it
Whether Conducting Academic Research or Purely Scientific Research, These Sites can be an Invaluable Aid.

Researching is the most crucial step of writing a scientific paper. It is always a well-researched scientific paper that inspires the assessor. At the same time, it must have genuine and authentic information for credibility. With the development in Internet industry, i.e., web resources, researching for scientific materials has now become a matter of a few clicks. Now students can get information on any topic pertaining to science through academic search engines. They provide a centralized platform and allow the students to acquire literature on any topic within seconds.

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, December 7, 2013 8:03 AM

When working with students to develp information fluency it is very useful to get them to explore alternatives to the two major search engines taht most people rely on.  This broadening of search strategy also helps limit the effect of "filter bubbles"

If you're not sure what a filter bubble might be then you will be shocked when you read and watch this: http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2011/05/12/the-filter-bubble/

When Class Became More Important to a Child's Education Than Race

When Class Became More Important to a Child's Education Than Race | ED 262 KCKCC Sp '25 | Scoop.it

"The country is far from fulfilling King's dream that race no longer limit children's opportunities, but how much income their parents earn is more and more influential."

Via Kelli McLoud Schingen
Sirila Padi's curator insight, December 5, 2013 9:04 PM

This article appears on my page because it gives a picture of how the society is. I think reace or money should not affect an individuals oppurtunities. I think the family or race one is born in should not have any type of affect on the capability of the person. Race is just a color on the outside and that should be not used on the outside to tell what you can and cant do.  However, I also dont like how money is now being used in substitute. I think one's familys income should not be able to be the key factor in if whats get the oppurtunity or not. It should rely on the individual it self and what they have to offer. A child can't make money for their family so they shouldnt deal with the consequences.  I think women and men of all ages can benefit reading this as it shows that the country's making progress in some ways, yet still has more to go. I think its time for use to take race and money out of the answer and leave it to one's capability. I feel if this is the case, we as a society will strong and will be able to be the most influential. It relates to Half the Sky as we see how race and gender our issues int he book as far as who or what gets the oppurtunities and that needs to be fixed.  Now that you have read this , create ideas to help stop making race and money be the factors in one's oppurtunities.
