![]() Eugenics was a disturbing sociopolitical movement in the early 20th century that promoted reproduction of the "fittest" and limited reproduction of the "unfit" with "inferior" genes. It took root in academia, influenced a famous Supreme Court decision, and resulted in the forced sterilization of tens of thousands of mentally ill or mentally challenged women in this country.
Adolf Hitler's embrace of eugenics would discredit the movement, but unfortunately it didn't disappear. Today, in fact, we see the rise of a new eugenics, made possible by the rapid development of bioscience and biotechnology, especially from the mapping of the human genome.
We now have researchers with the scientific know-how working with Wall Street-backed corporations to develop the new weapon in the struggle to rid the world of people with developmental disabilities: a "non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT)" that can detect a "disability" or "genetic disorder" anywhere from the fifth to ninth week of pregnancy without amniocentesis. One of the first "disorders" targeted by NIPT technologies is Down syndrome (DS). Although this test is sometimes promoted for "women at risk" for having children with DS, often the long-term goal of this technology is universal testing.
To be blunt, this test will likely result in a rapidly decreasing population of people with DS.

This is a great resource for anyone that is interested in multicultural education. Teachers in today’s schools need to incorporate multicultural studies into their classrooms because of the diversity in our schools, and because multicultural studies can create good citizens who have a better understanding of the world and its inhabitants. This resource includes links to general multicultural sites, world geography sites, multicultural art sites, interactive multicultural sites, world wide pen pal sites, and language websites. One of the links takes you to a site that has lots of multicultural lesson plans on it. These plans are for every subject, including art. The url for this site is http://www.eds-resources.com/edmulticult.htm#art. Some of the lesson plans included are “Islamic Foil Art,” and “Japanese Images of People.” Another link that could be importance to teachers when teaching multicultural education would be the geography link. At think link you can find printable maps and three dimensional globes.

![]() For older students, the media multitasking habit extends into the classroom. While most middle and high school students don’t have the opportunity to text, email, and surf the Internet during class, studies show the practice is nearly universal among students in college and professional school. One large survey found that 80 percent of college students admit to texting during class; 15 percent say they send 11 or more texts in a single class period.

I'm into the second week of my second MOOC with Coursera, studying Social Psychology (or in other words....understanding people and behaviours). I would advocate this style of learning for anyone who hasn't tried it yet - it's a great way to expand your knowledge into topics that might otherwise be difficult (or expensive) to access. This method of learning is particularly suited to continuos professional development. I'm less convinced that MOOCs would or could replace full or part-time degree courses. |

![]() Whiteness is not a culture. There is Irish culture and Italian culture and American culture - the latter, as Albert Murray pointed out, a mixture of the Yankee, the Indian, and the Negro (with a pinch of ethnic salt); there is youth culture and drug culture and queer culture; but there is no such thing as white culture. Whiteness has nothing to do with culture and everything to do with social position. It is nothing but a reflection of privilege, and exists for no reason other than to defend it. Without the privileges attached to it, the white race would not exist, and the white skin would have no more social significance than big feet. Via Thabo Mophiring, Deanna Dahlsad

You know Marion Wright Edelman as the founder and President of the Children’s Defense Fund; her husband, Peter, is a law professor and Associate Dean at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. Both have been diligent advocates of those in poverty and those under-served. Their focus has never waivered and they continue to be a beacon of hope to those who need the light the most. The Edelman’s are true heavy-weights in the fight for human rights and justice. Here is an excerpt of an interview with Marion Edelman Wright and Jennifer Lopez (J-Lo).
