Just as the pandemic is loosening its grip and schools and colleges move back to in-person classes, new startups are offering video platforms they say do a better job for teaching than Zoom or other mass-market systems. One of the latest entrants is Engageli (pronounced, “engage-ly”), which a few months ago scored $14.5 million in funding. The basic pitch is that the platform was built with teaching in mind, meaning it has features like polling built in in ways that quickly return results to professors. And the system uses a metaphor that students sit at “tables,” meaning that instructors can easily organize students into groups that can have their own breakout discussions.

New research suggests nearly all Australian smartphone users experience "nomophobia" – or fear of being without their mobile phones - and more than one in eight have severe symptoms associated with illegal or dangerous behaviour. A national survey of more than 2800 smartphone users found 99 per cent exhibited some degree of nomophobia. While 37 per cent had only mild symptoms, nearly half experienced the phobia in the moderate range and 13 per cent had a severe case.

The effects of mobiles phones and other technology at school is a hotly debated topic in many countries. Some advocate for a complete ban to limit distractions, while others suggest using technology as a teaching tool. Kids in public South Australian primary schools started the school year without being allowed to bring their mobile phones to class, unless they are needed for class activity. All students in public Western Australian Victorian, and Tasmanian schools have a mobile phone ban in place since for all or some of 2020. New South Wales also banned mobile phones in public primary schools, with secondary schools having the option to opt in, since the start of 2020.
