Beth, thanks for posting! What we have out at the moment is a pretty stripped down beta. We are adding features continuously and encourage users to get in touch to let us know what they would like to see.

Beth, when you say 'new beginners tool' what do you mean? I use diigo as it gives me so many capacities, like highlight and notes and very good ways for sharing. For good beginner tool you mean for those new to curation and/or social bookmarking?

If you are serious about your job search or developing your career, you cannot ignore content curation. Not only you need to read a lot of articles in your field to stay up to date but you also need to add some analysis and offer your opinion if you want to build and keep your reputation as an expert. 99% of recruiters are using internet to search for candidates.

RebelMouse was born to build a social media hub, but it does have strong aggregation, filtering and curation capabilities. SEO-wise it is not a great choice, but also Scoop.it has quite a few limits on this front.

Rebelmouse doesn't offer all of the extras Scoop.it has, from scheduling, to sharing to an extended number of social networks, to integration with newsletter and to the backend dashboard.

Scoop.it has also a better, cleaner and more legible format, that better lends itself to more in-depth reading than just browsing titles, images and tweets.

While I still use RebelMouse I have disconnected all inbound links because it posts it wacky and I was always having to go back and edit stuff. Now that I post stuff manually with their applet it isn't so bad. I still prefer Scoop.it though.

I use Rebelmouse for a while now, and I like it as a complementary tool to other Social Media tools. You can have a look at it on https://www.rebelmouse.com/Terheck/

Robin Good's insight:
Lindsey Weintraub at SocialMediaToday has a short but valuable guide to four key traits a good curator really needs to have.
From the ability to search and tap into sources that should not be what everyone else is looking at, to the ability to know in and out its chosen niche of interest and its players, the good content curator has an uncanny talent for scanning, selecting and triple-verifying anything potentially interesting before even considering showcasing in its selections.
Rightful. Good for anyone just starting out with curation. 7/10

In this short video excerpt, NYU journalism professor Jay Rosen, shares what he believes to be three fundamental characterizing traits of a good curator. In his view good content curators: 1) Respect and save people's time 2) Are richly interactive with their community of readers 3) Use analytics data to inform themselves on what to curate (from a conversation between Jay Rosen and Ethan Zuckerman held April 5, 2012 - Full video: http://techtv.mit.edu/collections/comm-forum/videos/18598-adapting-journalism-to-the-web-mit-communications-forum) To the point. 7/10 Original video: http://youtu.be/f5xRydcfTw4

I am very happy to see that last point about being data informed to figure out what curate. It made wonder about metrics for that, but first one would have to define what the ultimate success is for curation. (And not just the counting metrics or scores). In my space, how does content curation help address social change issues? One would have to build a theory of change.

Yes, Robin, I figured that. ;) It really is obvious that we don´t lack tools for just about any type of activity in social media anymore. Finding just the "right tools" and right forums to tell your stories to right audiences is a challenge for beginners. The coolest thing is, of course, when you find listeners you never knew existed. That´s when the whole thing gets interesting.

Common misconception about content curation is that everything is automated . This article does a great job explaining the human element involved in curating content. It also shares some bad habits people pick up from the unintentional convenience of automated tools.

This is a really good article about content curation. There is nothing wrong with doing content curation, as it provides insight from multiple sources. As this article points out, the trick is curating content that adds value to whatever it is that you are adding the content to. In my case, it's my blog. I've followed most of these guidelines instinctively, because I want to provide quality information to share with fellow technical communicators and e-learning specialists.
Read this one carefully, as it's chock full of good advice. --techcommgeekmom
