Even though the concept of the Massive Open Online Course has become wildly popular during the last year, empirical research on these initiatives is largely absent. On the one hand, this is not surprising.
" Issue number 33 of eLearning Papers focuses on the challenges and future of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), a trend in education that has skyrocketed since 2008."

"I will not address the question of whether this is really a “new” learning theory, or whether it’s a learning theory at all, which are some issues that have been discussed in the research literature. I’m also not going to comment on the relationships between connectivism and constructivism, behaviourism, and cognitivism, as I have a woeful lack of knowledge of such theories. I’m just going to try to figure out some of (not all of) the basic ideas/arguments in what Siemens has written, and give my comments."

"I have chosen to review Dunaway’s conceptual paper on connectivisim and information literacy. Besides defining connectivism as “learning that takes place when learners make connections between ideas located throughout their personal learning networks, which are composed of numerous information resources and technologies” (Dunaway, 2011, p. 676), "

"I recently did a mindmap on my personal and professional connections (See below). I have to say that my past achievements were not products of just my hard work, ambition, and drive. Although personal motivation has a lot to do with one’s success, I realized that my connections helped me get to where I am and they will also help me get to where I am going. "

"In this week’s learning resources we explored the Social Learning Theory and Connectivism as they relate to acquiring knowledge. By premise, the Social Learning Theory is based on the belief that learning takes place by observing and modeling the interactions of people or things in his or her surroundings and environment."

"In the last year, MOOCs have gotten a tremendous amount of publicity. Last November, the New York Times decided that 2012 was “the Year of the MOOC,” and columnists like David Brooks and Thomas Friedman have proclaimed ad nauseum that the MOOC “revolution” is a “tsunami” that will soon transform higher education. As a Time cover article on MOOCs put it—in a rhetorical flourish that has become a truly dead cliché—“College is Dead. Long Live College!”"
