A “fairly large” mountain lion that was spotted roaming in a La Crescenta neighborhood Thursday afternoon was tranquilized for relocation in the wild, a state wildlife official said.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Finally, we are shooting these guys with tranquiliers rather than bullets!
When the World Trade Organization found last year that U.S. labeling requirements for dolphin-safe tuna put Mexican tuna fishermen at a trade disadvantage, marine advocates worried that the federal government would weaken its dolphin-safe standards.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
We have consistently found over thousand of interviews and susrveys of both customers and folks selling seafood to the publi, that "Dolphin-Safe" certifications are the most widely known and understood.
In recent years, there has been a tendency to let the rigor with which this certification was created lapse. Here is to hoping that this is strengthened. Putting everyone on the same playing field is the only way to ensure true sustainability of exploited stocks.
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on Wednesday recommended designation of the San Gabriel River watershed and most of the San Gabriel Mountains as a national recreation area, making the popular playground eligible for additional law enforcement,...

PIRatE Lab's insight:
Good survey, although a question or two seems a bit misleading. But still a good way to learn a few things. But make sure you keep track of your answers. I was hoping to see my score at the end and ended up just geting a "thank you." I missed two I think....

(AP) — Alongside a flooded field of rice stubble, Jacob Katz dipped a fish net into turbid water and came up with a half dozen or so silvery juvenile salmon.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
This is a no-brainer. The only wonder is that it is not more widely practiced.
Governors Andrew Cuomo of New York and Chris Christie of New Jersey don't need to wait on gridlocked Washington to confront future risks from climate-change intensified storms. |
Coastal development has soared, and this rush toward the sea is the biggest factor in the rising costs of storm bailouts.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Another missive imploring that we use reason rather than idiocy when it comes to risk and the coastal zone. This is a good discussion starter.

(AP) -- Whole Foods Market said Friday that it will stop selling fish caught from depleted waters or through ecologically damaging methods, a move that comes as supermarkets nationwide try to make their seafood selections more sustainable.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Whole Foods is already the leader in proving info about seafood sold in their stores and sourcing it from responsible places. I have rarely ever seen red labeled seafood at their seafood counter.

How many times have I said it: "never mess with a castorid." We are having something of a hot dicussion here in Ventura County as to whether or not we have beavers remnant in some of our coastal watersheds (thery were here historically...we think). And now comes this cautionary tale.
Given that the beaver was on the side of the road, this may also have road kill tie-ins...

That bottle of Bordeaux you put aside may become even rarer in the next few decades as climate change could reduce wine grape production in traditional parts of the world and move it elsewhere, researchers say.

The Malibu Times is not what one might call an objective news outlet. Rather it typically spouts whatever tripe the pretty people like to hear. They have long been critical of this project, mostly subsittuting political rant from wealthy people or burnt-out folks who did way too many controlled substances in their youth for actual fact and objective assessment. So you must read this piece with an understanding of the cloudy, implied controversy that lingers. For example, they don't explain that the project dealys were mostly caused by weathly foks suing to slow the project down. That those delays and related issues ate up huge amounts of public funding (which went to lawyers, etc. rather than on teh ground restoration or restoration planning).
But....the good news is that the restoration will formally be open in two weeks. I hope to see everyone there!
