Following a cross-country journey with stops at science institutions, museums and even Capitol Hill, filmmaker and explorer James Cameron recently handed over the Deepsea Challenger, the only human occupied vehicle currently able to access the very deepest parts of the ocean, to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

PIRatE Lab's insight:
There is indeed renewed interest in deep sea mineral extraction. The Cook Islands and much of Polynesia are feeling the pressure at this moment. While putting everything off of the table is not a realistic approach, setting aside more unique areas seems completely resonable.
SAN FRANCISCO — Every weekday starting at dawn and continuing late into the evening, a shiny fleet of unmarked buses rolls through the streets of San Francisco, picking up thousands of young technology workers at dozens of stops and depositing them...
PIRatE Lab's insight:
While the same thing has been happening to our non-coastal ciities, the rising economic disparity is perhpas most clearly seen in our coastal redoubts. And San Francisco seems to be the epicenter in the U.S.
When I was younger, my family lived on a street full of families in San Francisco. With kids. And parents who were far from making >$100,000 per year (even adjusting for inflation). Many of my friends from high school/college streamed to the allure of San Francisco in part of the first wave of dotcom gentrification. This first wave seemed to only be interested in living in the city (or at least most of them were just happy to be in the city); Outer Mission, somewhere in the Avenues, it didn't matter. But as the gentrification has spread and taken root, the default, new young hipster is no longer content to just move into a destoryed old flat. Now they want expresso on the corner, flat screen TVs, WiFi, Muni to run on time, etc. I know now only one friend who lives in the city of San Francisco with children (and they have now moved to the southern edge of the city). And now only one of my elderly family members still lives in the city. San Franciso is becoming less of a mixing pot (if we define the pot by all the dimensions of human diversity).
We often scoff at various housing codes and urban planning policies. But these are key to keeping a balanced and just urban landscape.
Two rehabilitated sea lions recently released with satellite tags near the Channel Islands appear to be holding their own in local waters.
Authorities are searching for suspects following the seizure of almost 5,000 pounds of marijuana from a pot farm inside Topanga State Park.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
We need to get a handle on drugs in our country to (among many other things) curtail the rampant illegal growing of pot in our protected areas.
You’ve probably heard that grizzlies rarely scamper up tree trunks. Not true! Check out these photos of a grizzly climbing a tree in Katmai National Park, AK.

Super cool time-lapse of fog rolling in from the coast.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Clearly our widely held fear of sharks is justified. And tho think that some folks believe the entertainment industry fosters irrational fears....they clearly have never witnessed a midair attack from a cartilaginous fish.
Authorities in Canada are investigating the deaths of two young brothers who are believed to have been killed by an escaped python in an apartment in the New Brunswick city of Campbellton.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Why can't we get some jurisdictions to crank down on exotic plant/animal importation?

Good global pricing and a healthy fish supply has helped Filipino seafood producer Alliance Select Foods International swing back into profitability.
The company reported to the Philippine Stock Exchange that it had generated a net profit of $984,025 in the second quarter of 2013, a turnaround from the loss of $450,938 in the same period last year, reports BusinessInquirer.
This shored up the company’s attributable six-month bottomline to $420,991 compared to a net loss of $515,998 a year ago.
Revenues in the second quarter rose by 29 per cent to $25.2 million which the company attributed to an across-the-board increase in contribution from all of its local and foreign subsidiaries.
Sales for the first six months of the year also grew by about 27 per cent, reaching $44.9 million from a year ago as its canned tuna division benefited from improved fish prices and deliveries.
With ongoing investments in backward integration into fishing, the company said it was on track in sourcing part of its own fish supply, ensuring supply and price stability.
The second quarter is usually a weak season for smoked salmon but Alliance said it had bucked this worldwide industry phenomenon, noting that all of its salmon subsidiaries were able to boost their revenues over the same period last year.
“With peak sales and profit season expected in the latter part of the year, we project the division to continue contributing a robust share to the company’s sales and profit growth. Better procurement policies and marketing strategies meant that gross profit margin increased at rates higher than growth in sales,” the company reported.

These things have a certain appeal, but they are a major disturbance and will make for a new suite of management challenges should they come into even moderate use.
A well-known wildlife biologist was sentenced Tuesday to three years probation and a $7,500 fine for not following federal and state laws about catching and banding golden eagles.

“Unprecedented” is the word US-based Seafood Exchange president Travis Larkin uses to describe the current shrimp market. Risk has become immeasurable since prices have never gone up this fast, and there is no normal buying level to measure actions against.

Global warming and other factors are causing an oversupply of lobsters in Maine. The result is that prices have dropped to about half since 2007. We speak with an eighth generation lobsterman. Via clare wormald
PIRatE Lab's insight:
This is actually a pretty bad situation, akin to a bubble market. Long story short is that we have decimated the cod fisheries and lobster (a favorite food of cod) has benefited. But this abundant lobster biomass is a strong indicator of an ecosystem out of whack. It used to be that fishermen were diversified...now just about everyone's livlihoods are tied to lobster (and a few dogfish here and there). What do you think will happen with the lobster fishery collapses? Oh sorry, is that already happening...

Even though SONGS has closed down, we will need to operate the seawater cooling pumps in a limited fashion for a while to come to keep fuel rods cool. And this decline in energy capacity in southern California means that other "peaker" plants which are to only operate 10% of the time (read = very dirty emissions) are now operating essentially continuously are now going full bore every day. So we will have this data set going for a at least a few years more.
