Exciting article about the future of our universities!

Exploring Curation as a core competency in digital and media literacy education | Mihailidis | Journal of Interactive Media in Education

Exploring Curation as a core competency in digital and media literacy education | Mihailidis | Journal of Interactive Media in Education | CME-CPD | Scoop.it

Abstract: In today's hypermedia landscape, youth and young adults are increasingly using social media platforms, online aggregators and mobile applications for daily information use. Communication educators, armed with a host of free, easy-to-use online tools, have the ability to create dynamic approaches to teaching and learning about information and communication flow online. In this paper we explore the concept of curation as a student- and creation-driven pedagogical tool to enhance digital and media literacy education. We present a theoretical justification for curation and present six key ways that curation can be used to teach about critical thinking, analysis and expression online. We utilize a case study of the digital curation platform Storify to explore how curation works in the classroom, and present a framework that integrates curation pedagogy into core media literacy education learning outcomes.

Keywords: Media Literacy, Curation, Civic Engagement, Digital Learning

Sorry Laura - I missed your comment! I think the key is knowing why you are doing it, curating for curating sake I think can lead to disappointment. As we are early on in the use of the technology and curator adoption. Playing a longer game to achieve your purpose, building your voice, finding your tribe I think takes time...thus I do not have any great expectations from which to lose my enthusiasm! My main challenge is finding the time to do it - hence I missed my first opportunity to have a discussion about it!! Thanks for replying.
Laura Brown's comment, June 13, 2013 1:24 AM
I've been a content curator of one kind or another since the days I was working for the Open Directory Project in 1998. Having your passion and liking what you are doing is not enough for the every day grind at times. In some ways it is easier if you are working alone but that also has it's hurdles. I have a tendency to keep taking on too much. Even when I know I am feeling over whelmed or under inspired I will still find some little project. My first instinct is to try something new. (Especially a project someone else has had to give up on). Anyway, it is not so easy to keep going. I think it helps to lighten up on your schedule and give yourself a better balance of online/ work time and offline/ personal time.

Where To Find Good Alternative Sources for Content Curation

Where To Find Good Alternative Sources for Content Curation | CME-CPD | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If you are looking for ways to expand your horizon of content sources that you can use to find valuable content for your curated news channel, Pawan Deshpande, founder and CEO of Curata, has done an excellent job of listing and describing the many alternatives available to you.

While many beginner curators rely on their set of RSS feeds and on simple web searches to find new and interesting stuff on their topic of interest, there are a dozen more content source types that can be tapped to find relevant stuff. This article helps you start learning where to look to find them.

In association with the AMEE Faculty Development Committee and the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education (SACME)

We are very pleased to present this special joint Faculty Development/Continuing Professional Development webinar co-hosted by both the FD and CPD committees of AMEE.

Faculty Development and Continuing Professional Development programs have had parallel and overlapping histories and areas of focus at medical schools in the past 50 years. During the session we will first review the history of each of these education fields and then highlight their shared elements and their differences in target audience, purpose, pedagogy and scholarship. We will then examine the opportunities for these two fields to intersect and to compliment each other to foster system change and use pooled practice and teaching evaluation data to foster performance improvement and continuing professional competence.

How Scoop.it, Google Plus & Twitter can turn chaos into order

How Scoop.it, Google Plus & Twitter can turn chaos into order | CME-CPD | Scoop.it

If you do anything professionally related to online technology, you understand the immense amount of data you need to sort through each day. There are the daily content roundups, blogs to read, Facebook posts and to check, tweets to scroll through and news sites. That doesn’t include whatever else arrives in your in-box. I literally cannot keep up with all that I want to know about social media technology and its use for engagement, fundraising and advocacy.

It’s really too much to know. That’s when I began trusting the curators.

Trusting the curators was a strategy I employed to begin to figure out what to read, what I needed to read, and what others whom I trusted thought was important to read. We cannot read it all. We cannot begin to imagine trying to read it all. We must trust to the curators.

Trusting others to curate content has become my primary means for gathering relevant information about social media and particularly nonprofit technology.

John Rudkin's curator insight, April 26, 2014 6:30 AM

Curation is all about trust.  I too cut to the cause by keeping in the know via great curators.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) - The process by which healthcare professionals engage in activities designed to support their continuing professional development. Activities are derived from multiple instructional domains, are learner centered, and support the ability of those professionals to provide high-quality, comprehensive, and continuous patient care and service to the public or their profession. The content of CME can be focused not only on clinical care, but also on those attitudes/skills necessary for the individual to contribute as an effective administrator, teacher, researcher, and team member in the healthcare system. Note: CME is often used interchangeably with continuing professional development (CPD).

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) –The learning journey of the healthcare professional as he/she seeks to improve her/his competence and expertise. This learning journey is supported by continuing medical education and other personal/professional activities by the learner with the intention of providing safe, legal, and high-quality services aiming at better health outcomes

for the patients and the community.

Online medical content curation and personal time management with Web 2.0: an exciting era

Online medical content curation and personal time management with Web 2.0: an exciting era | CME-CPD | Scoop.it

By Bertalan Mesko

The recent increase in the number of online medical resources has raised important questions about content curation on the World Wide Web and the importance of time management tools and applications used in medicine and healthcare. Content curation is crucial at a time when patients and their doctors are searching more online but the majority of health resources are considered medically unreliable. The value of crowdsourcing and time management tools that can save time and effort for professionals is demonstrated.

A new wave of sites based on topic curation, both human and algorithmic, are creating opportunities to reach targeted audiences.

Via Robin Good
Robin Good's curator insight, May 6, 2013 1:26 PM

Anthony Kosner on Content.ly analyzes three different news discovery services in order to illustrate the different types of approaches available today to gather and filter streams for a specific audience.

He takes as examples Fuego, Upworthy and Prismatic, which utilize three very different solutions to aggregating and filtering the news in order to provide a relevant stream to their readers.

  • Fuego works by curating - manually - a selected group of thought leaders in the field of journalism. Most everything they post becomes part of Fuego.

  • Upworthy is powered by human curators who decide what makes the news and what doesn't.

  • Prismatic is strong on extracting relevant stories based on specific keywords and on your preferences and interaction with the service itself.

Overall, the article tries to illustrate how different can be the approaches utilized to filter and suggest content to a specific audience.

Interesting. Informative. 6/10
