What counts as a novel food in the EU? See the definition, real examples and how to check your ingredient's status. A novel food is any food that was not consumed to a significant degree in the European Union before 15 May 1997. Under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, a novel food can only be sold in the EU after it is authorised and added to the Union list, which sets its specifications, conditions of use and labelling. Examples include chia seeds, dried mealworm larvae and DHA-rich algal oil.

Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 (No Hunger) appears increasingly challenging at the global scale, with progress having stalled over the past decade. Nevertheless, emerging evidence from diverse local contexts suggests that agroecological farming practices may contribute substantially to reducing food insecurity. Here we draw on a dataset of more than 30,000 households from 17 countries measuring (a) the number and type of adopted agroecological farming practices and (b) household food insecurity, assessed using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES).
