Alors que la question de la montée des eaux inquiète, des chercheurs estiment que les mangroves pourraient permettre de protéger les zones côtières "La végétation littorale peut jouer un rôle déterminant dans la protection des zones côtières contre les inondations, car sa présence et sa structure dissipent l'énergie des vagues et des ondes de tempête", note une équipe de chercheurs de l'université d'Amsterdam, aux Pays-Bas. Dans leurs travaux publiés dans la revue PNAS, les auteurs estiment que la restauration des mangroves "peut jouer un rôle crucial à l'échelle mondiale dans la protection des zones côtières vulnérables contre les inondations, en complément des digues".
