Before the pediatrician enters the exam room, medical assistants and other key care team members often discuss vaccines with the family.

Our new study in Pediatrics is one of the first to directly observe these interactions. We found:
- MAs discussed vaccines before the pediatrician entered the room in over half of visits. Front office staff rarely did.
- Communication practices varied, especially for flu and COVID-19 vaccines, which were often offered instead of recommended.
- Most MAs we interviewed had received no formal training on vaccine communication.

MAs and other primary care team members already communicate about vaccines. Tailored training and support are practical, high-impact ways to strengthen team-based vaccine communication.

In Seasonal Vaccines, Some Insights Have an Expiration Date.

Influenza and COVID are established vaccine categories.

But that does not mean the questions stay the same.

Each season brings a different context.

Circulating strains change.

Effectiveness data emerge.

Recommendations evolve.

Patient risk perception shifts.

Implementation barriers become more or less visible.

And HCPs begin asking different questions.

That is where Field Medical becomes especially valuable.

Not because every season reveals a completely new scientific issue.

But because MSLs can detect when familiar challenges are starting to show up differently in practice.

Maybe several regions begin hearing the same question about a newly emphasized patient population.

Maybe HCPs understand the recommendation, but implementation is inconsistent across health systems.

Maybe new effectiveness data are changing how stakeholders talk about benefit.

Maybe uptake is lagging even though awareness is high.

Those signals may be strategically important.

But timing matters.

If the pattern is recognized months later, it may still be scientifically valid.

It may just be too late to influence that season.

That is why Field Medical teams need a way to:
- Identify repeated signals quickly
- Distinguish isolated comments from emerging patterns
- Escalate time-sensitive issues
- Connect insights to Medical strategy, education, and evidence teams
- Close the loop while the insight can still influence action

Not every insight is urgent.

But in seasonal vaccines, some have a very short window of strategic relevance.

🎯 TAKEAWAY: In established vaccines, the value of an insight depends not only on what it tells you, but also on whether you recognize it while there is still time to act.

As we recognize #WorldPolioDay tomorrow, we remember our namesake, Dr. Albert B. Sabin, who developed the oral polio vaccine and dedicated his life to expanding vaccine access to everyone, everywhere.

Sabin's vaccine is widely credited with playing a major role in the global effort to eliminate polio.

The Sabin Vaccine Institute continues to unlock the full benefits of vaccines to protect people everywhere. We turn innovation into impact: developing vaccines, responding to vaccine-preventable outbreaks, and generating data that informs country decision making around deploying immunization to save lives.

Measles remains a leading cause of vaccine-preventable burden among children, particularly in low-income settings. Despite decades of progress, there are indications of measles resurgence due to stagnation in vaccine coverage. Here, using the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023, we systematically assessed measles incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and vaccine coverage (measles-containing vaccine 1 (MCV1) and measles-containing vaccine 2 (MCV2)) among children under 5 years of age across 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2023. Between 1990 and 2019, global measles incidence and mortality declined by approximately 80% and 90%, respectively, but rebounded sharply after 2020, with 15.6 million cases and 118,000 deaths estimated in 2023 (+40% and +12% increases, respectively, between 2019 and 2023). Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia continue to bear the highest burden. Global MCV1 coverage rose from 67.2% in 1990 to 83.6% in 2019 but stalled and declined slightly to 81.0% by 2023; MCV2 coverage increased from 14.4% in 1990 to 68.4% in 2019 and reached 71.4% by 2023. Several regions remain well below the Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030) target of 90% coverage. The recent measles resurgence underscores the fragility of global immunization progress and the urgent need to restore routine vaccination, close immunity gaps and strengthen outbreak preparedness. Updates to the Global Burden of Disease Study showed that although global measles incidence and mortality had declined in 1990−2019, its resurgence since 2020 reflects stalled vaccination progress worldwide.

The work of AAHMS on trust in the last year has been informative and thoughtful. Our panel today revisited a topic the Academy covered in detail last year.

One question that remains for me is what generative AI means for trust and other forms of social interaction? What does it do to our beliefs about authenticity? What does it do to people's unique voice? Yet also, what it does for bringing greater access to self expression for some people?

Vinu Arumugham, a California electrical engineer at Amazon with no training whatsoever in science or medicine, has a large social media following. He is featured on the Childens Health Defense website as an expert. His posts are eye-opening and full of flawed thinking. He disparages science and suggests that a plausible mechanism and AI are all you need to prove causation. He routinely dispenses medical advice as in the link attached. He also attacks physicians personally accusing them of murder. Lots of people think he is a credible expert. He is among the most infuential antivaxxers online. I think he crosses the line from expressing opinion to giving medical advice.

A Facebook group.
A WhatsApp message.
A search engine.
A conversation with another parent.

Digital spaces have transformed how people find and share health information, creating opportunities for better communication, but also for misinformation to spread.

Understanding the online information environment is therefore increasingly important for childhood vaccination and public health.

𝟯𝟴 % des Français déclarent être exposés au moins une fois par mois à de fausses informations de santé, et 𝟰𝟭 % des personnes exposées ont renoncé à un vaccin. Face à la maladie, on cherche des réponses et de l'espoir : les désinformateurs jouent sur cette vulnérabilité.

2️⃣ 𝗟𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲̀𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲, 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Je fais moi-même, avec beaucoup d'autres, l'objet de harcèlement incessant, de menaces, de mises en demeure et de procédures judiciaires. J'ai la chance d'être protégé par mon université ; d'autres doivent se défendre seuls, sur leurs fonds personnels. On ne peut pas demander aux chercheurs et aux soignants de défendre les connaissances établies sans les protéger. Beaucoup on déjà jeté l'éponge.

3️⃣ 𝗟𝗮 𝗿𝗲́𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲́𝗱𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗮̀ 𝗹𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
L'observatoire annoncé le 21 octobre repose sur une veille confiée à la direction de la communication du ministère et sur un compte TikTok. Aucune enveloppe budgétaire spécifique n'est prévue, hormis un poste de communicant, et le budget de Santé.fr a même été amputé.

𝗜𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗾𝘂𝗲 :
• une véritable infovigilance, avec un portail de signalement ouvert acteurs de terrain scientifiques et professionnels de santé, aujourd'hui exclus du dispositif ;
• un service public de l'information en santé, indépendant du pouvoir politique ;
• des sanctions contre les désinformateurs et une protection des scientifiques harcelés.

Le rapport remis en janvier 2026 recommandait neuf mesures. 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝗰𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲́𝗲.
