New analysis out with the Edelman Trust Institute and my colleagues at the Yale School of Public Health, surveying nearly 13,000 people across 13 countries about how they decide what to believe about their health.
Trust in doctors hasn’t dropped. What has changed is the number of sources people draw from when making health decisions. AI, peers, online communities, and other sources are now competing for the same attention. Doctors haven’t necessarily lost their authority, but their voices are being diluted in an increasingly noisy information environment. AI is already part of that shift: nearly half of people say someone with no medical training but good AI skills could match a doctor on at least one health task.
The people who hold the most divisive health beliefs are also the ones most densely connected to one another. And they are the group most likely to say it would matter if their healthcare provider had a presence in their community.
That matters because these aren’t necessarily people who have turned away from institutions. They are open to institutional voices that show up where they already are. And what helps once you’re there isn’t complicated. Listen first. Welcome doubts without judgment. Take people’s concerns seriously. Our data suggest that having the right information isn't the only thing that matters. Showing up in communities and building relationships is valued most by the people who are hardest to reach.
The report closes with a case study of what this can look like in practice. After the East Palestine train derailment, a Yale researcher and a local activist went door to door together, asking residents about their experiences with water quality. That partnership became part of a $10 million NIH-funded research program.
Nobody’s beliefs had to be corrected along the way. The collaboration was organized around a shared goal, rather than agreement about what to think.
This is the first output of a larger collaboration between the Yale School of Public Health and the Edelman Trust Institute, and I’m glad to be part of it. Thanks to Megan Ranney for her leadership, the Edelman Trust team: Jennifer Hauser, MPH, Caitlin Semo, David M. Bersoff, Ph.D., Drake Baer and to my Yale colleagues Jason L. Schwartz, Mark Schlesinger, Nicole Deziel, and Kristen Panthagani. The East Palestine partnership happened because Brinda Adhikari and the Why Should I Trust You? team made the introduction.

My new article in the Journal of Health Services Research & Policy draws on a set of 40 interviews with Australians all over the continent about their COVID vaccine experiences and attitudes. The interviews were conducted in late 2022, after the Australian population was highly vaccinated with the first two vaccine doses, but even so we saw huge waves of infection and deaths after the country was 'opened up'.
I identified four stances on COVID vaccines: (1) vaccine confidence; (2) vaccine hesitance; (3) vaccine disillusionment; and (4) vaccine pragmatism.
I argue that these findings demonstrate how over-promising what COVID vaccines can do leads to disillusionment but that strong policies, including mandates, do work and people accept them if the rationale is clear. The findings show how changing pandemic conditions and policies as well as lived experiences come together in people's attitudes and behaviours to vaccines. Really pertinent now that we have seen Australians' uptake of COVID vaccines drop precipitously since 2022, and the government has decided to limit who can access a vaccine free of charge from 1 October

With each passing day, RFK Jr’s propaganda has led to a growing number of severe illnesses and deaths among US children and adults. His venomous assault on American science is doing lasting harm to our nation. Given the chance, he’ll deprive millions, if not tens of millions of their access to lifesaving vaccines.

How long is measles contagious—and what was common before mass vaccination?
Measles is contagious during its initial phase and for three to four days after the rash begins. However, most cases are benign and go unreported.
Before mass vaccination was introduced, nearly everyone contracted measles by age 15 and obtained lifetime immunity.
Want to take a closer look at the research? You’ll find more information in the first comment. ⬇️

New from The Nation about the latest from Defend Public Health: "Callan has concluded that RFK Jr. is both a shill for the largely unregulated 'wellness industry,' promoting quack cures over rigorously tested vaccines and medicines, and also a promoter of a form of neo-eugenics. Time and again, she says, Kennedy argues for policies that disproportionately hurt the poor and the vulnerable, and in favor of parental choices that leave genetically or otherwise medically sensitive children at peculiar risk of death."
