New paper in Pharmacoeconomics on how to value combination vaccines

Together with Allison Portnoy, Clint Pecenka, William Hausdorff and Christopher J. Gill, we've just published a new paper on setting out how we could calculate the value of combination vaccines.

This is a key issue right now as schedules are crowded, so it's getting harder to find room for new vaccines.

Key points:

- Combination vaccines reduce injections and simplify schedules but often come with higher prices.
- Current health economic evaluation frameworks don’t fully capture their value.
- We’ve developed a new framework that is consistent with existing frameworks (e.g. cost-effectiveness, benefit-cost) but accounts for:

Caregiver cost reductions
Operational efficiencies
Opportunity cost savings
Streamlined schedules

AI-Driven Detection of Fake News and Sentiment Analysis: A Framework for Truth Verification and Emerging Pattern Recognition (International Journal of Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Machine Learning):

Glimpse: The stability of society and democratic discourse are seriously threatened by the quick dissemination of false information on digital media. An artificial intelligence (AI)-driven framework for sentiment analysis, truth verification, and false news identification is proposed in this research. To differentiate real information from made-up stories, the approach combines transformer-based natural language processing (NLP) structures with graph-based pattern recognition. Additionally, we provide a novel hybrid model that combines graph topology learning with contextual embeddings to detect new trends in the distribution of information.

Online discussions: Whose voices are heard? 💬

A field experiment with 520 consenting participants conducted on Reddit by researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Technische Universität Dresden, and Stanford University sheds light on this dynamic—and what can be done to change it.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀:

🔹 A small minority of users drives most online discussion; many lurk silently. 
🔹 Those who found the discussion toxic, disrespectful, or polarized were more likely to remain silent. Surprisingly, however, those same perceptions predicted higher comment counts among active users. 
🔹 Active users are typically male, highly interested in politics, and self-described frequent commenters. 
 
𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:

🔹 Financial incentives ($2/day per serious comment) reduced participation inequality. 
🔹 Appealing to norms (“stay respectful”) had little effect. 
🔹 Positive feedback (more upvotes than downvotes) was associated to future participation. 
 
𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻:

🔹 No single solution exists—but a combination of strategies can help: 
🔹 Nonmonetary rewards for first-time and high-quality contributions 
🔹 Clear rules and consistent enforcement to reduce toxicity 
🔹 Caps on comment counts to limit dominance of extremely active users

A toutes les personnes qui me demandent bien légitimement le lien entre l'Université d'Angers et le colloque consacré à la "sécurisation de l'introduction des pratiques de santé non conventionnelles" lequel, je l'espère très sincèrement, n'aura pas lieu au Sénat le 22 janvier prochain et auquel auraient dû participer nos "amis" les comiques du Collège Universitaire de Médecines Intégrative et Complémentaires (CUMIC) et du GETCOP Groupe d'Evaluation des Thérapies Complémentaires Personnalisées et des pratiques innovantes, je dois quelques explications.

L'affiche annonçant le programme et la liste des intervenants indique une adresse mail pour l'inscription des participants à ce colloque. Celle-ci renvoie à AMFOR Compétences, un organisme de formation angevin certifié #Qualiopi (mais c'est juste pour en mettre plein la vue, si ça avait la moindre valeur, ça se saurait) très très fier d'afficher la confiance affichée par quelques uns de ses clients dont le GETCOP, l'Université d'Angers et la Chambre Nationale des Praticiens de la Santé se faisant passer pour un syndicat mais qui n'est qu'une association "loi 1901" basée à Angers.

On pourrait s'attendre à ce que cette chambre nationale des praticiens de la santé soit composée exclusivement de praticiens dont le métier est reconnu comme profession de santé dans le Code de la Santé Publique... que nenni !
Outre les 15 "disciplines" pseudo-médicales qui y sont représentées on trouve dans son conseil scientifique une vétérinaire homéopathe ostéopathe, un expert en nutrition et épigénéique et... Michel de Lorgeril, cardiologue connu pour ses prises de position sur l'inutilité présumée des statines dans l'hypercholestérolémie, le caractère bénéfique du cholestérol sur le système cardiovasculaire et son opposition aux vaccins...
Dans son conseil d'administration, outre quelques ostéopathes, un ingénieur chimiste / naturopathe ou un chiropracteur, on retrouve le Dr Bernard Payrau, président du GETCOP... étonnant non ? Et qui est donc la responsable du pôle formation de notre syndicat ? Myriam Pichon Godet, présidente de l'AMFOR... c'est très fort !

Autre client majeur d'AMFOR, OGA Atlantic qui proposait à son catalogue 2024, outre de "libérer son enfant intérieur et développer son potentiel professionnel" de découvrir les clés de l'immunité (sic) pour "Comprendre les conséquences d’un mauvais choix alimentaire, du stress et des émotions négatives sur la perméabilité de la muqueuse intestinale et la chute de l’immunité" et "apprendre comment renforcer l’immunité de manière naturelle
et se débarrasser des toxines pour se régénérer" avec de la phytothérapie, de l'aromathérapie et des techniques de "libération de stress et soins énergétiques" délivrées par une naturopathe / kinésiologue et thérapeute quantique !

Bon, Stephanie RIST et Claude Malhuret, si ça vous suffit pas pour mettre un coup d'arrêt définitif à cette mascarade...
Et dites, le Ministère du Travail, on arrête de certifier n'importe quoi ?

This is a really important acknowledgement Kashyap Patel as the Oncology community has been relatively silent on the unusual transition of cancers post pandemic.

They appear far more aggressive and spread much earlier than normal.

However, linking it to long Covid is a mistake, based on my research. Usually these individuals have a hyper-responsive immune system which is the main predisposition for persistent immune dysregulation and symptoms.

Conversely, long Covid symptoms primarily initiated and exacerbated by certain Covid "interventions" would be a far more likely issue because of probable cellular interferon suppression.

The first step is to acknowledge and then research for specific associations.

Children appear to be getting sick more often, and viral transmission in schools is stronger and more sustained than in recent pre-pandemic years. That raises uncomfortable questions.

Developing childhood immune systems are sensitive to disruption, and during COVID we chose to intervene with vaccines in a very low-risk cohort at population scale.

At the time, this was framed as precaution to "protect granny". In hindsight, it may also have been an unnecessary gamble.

It’s important to acknowledge current health trajectories if we want to understand where population health is heading.

This chart shows a clear signal: education settings are now acting as a major amplifier of respiratory infection, a pattern likely to repeat across much of the Northern Hemisphere.

We still don’t fully understand whether repeated SARS-CoV-2 exposure, altered immune training, or vaccine-era decisions have changed how children respond to infections. But what is becoming clear is that children now play a central role in spreading infection — first to parents, then to grandparents, and ultimately into care facilities and hospitals.

The question we should be asking isn’t whether this is uncomfortable to discuss. It’s whether we’re starting to see the long-term implications — not just for children, but for the whole population.

In 2007, Oprah Winfrey featured Jenny McCarthy, the former Playboy model turned anti-vaccine activist, on her show to talk about her son Evan’s autism diagnosis.

🎉 Excited to share our latest research on HPV vaccination and cervical cancer prevention!
The HPV vaccine is one of the most effective tools we have to prevent cervical cancer—yet coverage remains far too low worldwide.
Our cohort study followed women with cervical cancer or high-grade lesions over two decades, revealing both the remarkable effectiveness of the vaccine and a critical gap in its implementation.
💡 Key findings:
HPV vaccination is highly effective in preventing not only cervical cancer but also high-grade cervical lesions.
However, the rate of secondary prevention—vaccinating women after diagnosis and treatment—remains critically low.
Why this matters: While primary prevention for adolescents is essential, our study highlights the untapped potential of adjuvant vaccination following treatment of cervical disease. Even after diagnosis, HPV vaccination offers substantial protection against future lesions—yet this strategy is vastly underutilized in clinical practice.
🔑 Moving forward:
Healthcare providers need better education about the benefits of post-diagnosis vaccination.
Clinical guidelines should explicitly integrate secondary prevention into care pathways.
Communication strategies must reach both young people (through social media and trusted voices) and adult women in clinical care.
Catch-up vaccination programs should be expanded.

The evidence is clear: we have powerful prevention tools at multiple stages. Now we need comprehensive strategies that use them effectively.

In our forthcoming peer-reviewed study publication in the International Journal of Public Sector Performance Management, Yulong Li, Anthony Scotina, and I wanted to understand why some U.S. states embraced COVID-19 vaccination while others lagged far behind, even when vaccines were widely available. By analyzing all 50 states, we uncovered “three Americas,” each shaped by a mix of politics, personality, and how leaders communicated with the public. Governors who talked more often and more positively about vaccines tended to lead states with higher vaccination rates. Personality traits like openness and anxiety also mattered in how communities responded. In contrast, states with little messaging, negative tone, and looser policies struggled the most. Our takeaway is simple but powerful: how leaders communicate matters, emotions matter, and people respond differently to health messages.
