Consuming news on social media is often associated with "doom scrolling," where people spend excessive time online consuming negative news. However, researchers have found that this same behavior, when leveraged effectively, can help foster a well-informed society.

Thrilled to share this Viewpoint article in The Lancet Primary Care, in which we explore the health information journey of patients and reflect on the role of healthcare providers in information space.
Googling symptoms, Doing Your Own Research or chatting with an AI chatbot - health information goes well beyond consultation rooms. In this article, we take a broader look at the influences on both patients and HCPs in relation to information space (we really go into space!) and show how health information from providers often gets outshone by others in information space. It’s hard, if not impossible, as a provider to affect the structures of info space, where eyeballs are valued over accuracy. But there are still things that can be done. Like building trust through continuity of care and integrating questions about a patient’s information space to get a better understanding of ideas, concerns and expectations.

Le numéro Grands Dossiers (n°87) de Diplomatie – “Géopolitique de la désinformation” n’étant (malheureusement) plus disponible à la vente, je partage ici la version complète de l’article que nous y avions publié avec Antoine Marie consacré aux causes structurelles de la désinformation et aux leviers de résilience collective.
Nous y exposons une thèse simple : on ne combat pas durablement la désinformation sans s’attaquer à ses racines sociales, économiques et institutionnelles. Lutter contre les fausses nouvelles ne suffit pas ; il faut aussi réparer les environnements de défiance, d’isolement et de précarité qui les rendent crédibles et attractives.

La vaccination des renards a permis d’éliminer la rage en Europe. La lutte contre la grippe aviaire illustre les défis et le potentiel des stratégies coordonnées. Au-delà des zoonoses, la vaccination contribue aussi à : ✔️ Réduire l’antibiorésistance ✔️ Préserver les écosystèmes ✔️ Inspirer l’innovation en santé humaine 🔑 Pour réussir : coopération entre secteurs, innovation vaccinale et prise en compte des équilibres écologiques. 👉 La vaccination One Health n’est pas un idéal, c’est une nécessité pour répondre aux défis sanitaires complexes de notre siècle.
A few weeks ago, I received an unexpected but deeply meaningful email from Dr. Duncan Maru, Assistant Commissioner at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. He’d read my recent New York Times essay and reached out to say that storytelling and historical narrative are things public health often struggles to do well — and that his team would love to learn more about my work and “how I do it.” (Pinching myself...)
Tomorrow, I’ll be joining their all-hands meeting with about 100 colleagues from across NYC’s public health ecosystem — social workers, analysts, clinicians, community health workers, and administrators.
It’s a full-circle moment for me. I interned at the NYC DOHMH (HRTP Interns stand up!) while earning my DrPH at The City University of New York Graduate Center and later consulted there. observational study that used the electronic health records of the Department of Veterans Affairs to evaluate the effectiveness of the 2024–2025 Covid-19 vaccine among veterans who received the Covid-19 and influenza vaccines on the same day (164,132 participants) and in an active-comparator group of veterans who received the influenza vaccine only (131,839 participants), between September 3 and December 31, 2024.

Nothing illustrates the central role of the internet more than the spread of the anti-vax movement, and the installation of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as Trump’s Secretary of Health and Human Services. Kennedy’s various assertions about the dangers of vaccinations are not only untrue; they are actively dangerous, because they convince parents not to give their children life-saving vaccines. It is hard to connect opposition to vaccines to any kind of coherent conservative ideology—indeed, in earlier periods conservatives would have welcomed the innovation and benefits that vaccines conferred. It is the internet that facilitated what grew into a vast network of vaccine skeptics. No number of empirical scientific studies could overcome the desire of many people who wanted to believe that there were evil forces in American society pushing things that were harmful to them, and they saw plentiful confirmation of their views on the internet.
DiResta gives an example of how the internet contributed to this spread directly. There should be no reason why yoga moms should be drawn to QAnon and conspiratorial thinking. There was, however, one prominent yoga guru who urged his followers to look to QAnon for the truth. An algorithm on an internet platform picked up this connection, and in effect decided that if this yoga influencer was into QAnon, other yoga aficionados should also be into conspiracy theories as well, and started recommending conspiratorial content to them. That is what algorithms do: they don’t understand meaning or context, but simply seek to maximize attention by directing people to popular content.

Mme Geraldine Savary, en tant que présidente du Club, vous avez déclaré dans le communiqué du club vouloir "Contribuer à la vitalité du paysage médiatique suisse et à la valorisation du travail des professionnels de l’information" et "Restaurer le lien de confiance entre les médias et le public par le partage d’expériences et l’éducation aux médias" (https://lnkd.in/dCyEkBQG). Or, c'est totalement l'inverse de ce qui se passe avec la venue de cette personne.

"Le rôle des médias est d’éclairer, pas d’entretenir la confusion entre opinion, controverse scientifique et désinformation.
Quand une figure publique, suspendue par son ordre professionnel et mise en cause pour manquements graves à la rigueur scientifique et à la déontologie, trouve encore une tribune, la question n’est plus celle de la liberté d’expression ni de la pluralité des idées, mais bien celle de la responsabilité journalistique."
