Call for Participation: Information Disorder Workshop

Does your work explore misinformation, disinformation, scams, online hate, or other forms of harmful information? As the world continues to grapple with the destabilizing effects of information disorder, we are convening a workshop at the CSCW conference to bring together a global community of scholars committed to understanding and addressing these issues.

This workshop will provide space to reflect on the current state of the field, identify shared priorities, and discuss how we can support one another in sustaining this vital work. Participants may join online in early October or in person in Bergen, Norway on October 18th.

We are soliciting 2-6 page workshop papers from empirical pre-quels/sequels, position papers, theories, provocations and more.

My sabbatical adventures continue...

Just wrapped up two wonderful days at the Karolinska Institutet attending the UNIVACC 2025 Conference! Focus of the meeting- 'Understanding and strengthening vaccine confidence among underserved populations'. The event brought together a diverse group of participants from civil society, academia, and public health institutions such as ECDC and WHO.

I think they were a little shocked to have an Aussie in the mix! Made it into the program to present my research around community-led communication efforts for migrants and refugees!

Key takeaways:
👉 Focus on timeliness of vaccines, not just completion at 5 years = plus need better data to track under immunisation!
👉 Recognise that we have community members who start but don’t complete the vaccine journey... not due to hesitancy but others barriers
👉 Address the lack of systems for adult/adolescent catch-up
👉 Explore innovative access strategies: like Sweden’s HPV vaccine drop-ins at cinemas and mobile vans for older community member.

Sadly we have critical blind spots in the research- people who are homeless, those living with disabilities, migrant adults!

Sad to have missed this years #CDIC2025! Promise to stop gallivanting and be back in time for next years conference in Melbourne!

La vaccination a été une expérimentation à échelle humaine, puisque les autorités ont d’abord vaccinés puis observés les conséquences. Pour certaines personnes, ces conséquences ont été terribles.

⚠️ Il s’agit clairement du scandale sanitaire du siècle et la lumière est loin d’être faite sur ce qui s’est déroulé durant cette période.

Si nous n’agissons pas pour faire reconnaître ce statut de victime, et obtenir la réparation qui leur est due, alors nous pouvons être certain qu’ils recommenceront.

C’est pourquoi je serai toujours du côté des victimes. 🤝

Some people have magnetic personalities. Now even more after COVID vaccines. 6 cases of pure hoax and craziness. No wonder why 2 of the authors have no link to their medical board…
What makes this even funnier is that magnetism is not full body distributed. Well, anyone can get a spoon to stand on their nose… Vaccine or not.
The problem is not the paper which is a joke. It is the journal which is even worse…

In the first weeks of COVID, many of us openly attacked Robert Malone for all the lies he was pushing. So much that he disappeared from the public domain. Now back ? Should we remind all that he was claiming to be the inventor of the mRNA vaccine. So dear anti-vaxxers, on your list of individuals you should target as dangerous, this person being the father of mRNA should never be on any vaccine committee. He is the reason of all of this mRNA shit (irony)…

The problem with those posting against all of those new vaccine technologies is that they don’t quote the data according to what the authors wrote. In the case of #NicolasHulscher, he omitted the most important thing the authors : none of the AE were related to the vaccines. Nice try, boy…

We recently received a comment asking, “Why are there ZERO cases of SIDS or autism in unvaccinated Amish communities?” This claim is a common myth, but it is not supported by scientific evidence. In reality, both SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and autism have been documented in Amish communities. Peer-reviewed studies and medical reports confirm that SIDS does occur among the Amish, including cases linked to genetic syndromes unique to these populations.

Similarly, multiple studies have identified and diagnosed autism in Amish children, along with many other health conditions, though rates may appear lower due to factors like limited healthcare access, cultural attitudes, and underreporting—not because these conditions are absent.

Additionally, it’s a misconception that the Amish universally refuse vaccines. Research shows that many Amish parents accept at least some vaccines for their children, and only a small minority refuse all immunizations. Lower vaccination rates in some Amish communities are often due to concerns about vaccine safety or logistical barriers, not blanket opposition. And sadly, vaccine-preventable infections are diagnosed at higher rates in unvaccinated Amish children (compared to other children who are vaccinated).

In summary: SIDS and autism are present in Amish communities, and the idea that they are “zero” in unvaccinated groups is a myth. Accurate information helps us all make better health decisions and supports scientific literacy in our communities.

How intriguing that the authors are in such conflict of interest that their results mean nothing. Especially that
all being described is also seen with COVID infections.
As well, it is another VAERS analysis with all the flaws seen with such : « contribution.The limitations of this study stem from the inherent constraints of the CDC/FDA VAERS system. It cannot compare vaccine adverse events (AEs) to a non-vaccinated control population, nor does it allow for prospective observational analysis. VAERS only enables the comparison of novel vaccines to vaccines already in use, assumed to be safe. » One of the most important limitation as well, and not mentioned, is that these individuals could have contracted COVID, which the authors have not assessed.

A document circulated to members of Congress misinterprets studies and cites debunked research, scientists say. It could influence congressional perceptions of vaccine safety.

Vaccine hesitancy: a gamble ? A deadly one in some situation. Game theory reveals that vaccine hesitancy is not a moral failure, but simply the predictable outcome of a system in which individual and collective incentives aren't properly aligned. In other words, because of a fundamental tension between individual choice and collective welfare, relying solely on individual choice may not achieve public health goals.

This morning I'm told FDA Commissioner Marty Makary introduced Calley Means at FDA's annual Science Forum as "one of science's best thought leaders ever." Here's what you need to know:

Means has used his position as a top WH adviser to accuse physician groups, federal agencies and government scientists of financial corruption that biases their work.
Means, however, has his own stake in the sprawling US health system. He’s the co-founder of an online platform that offers dietary supplements, herbal remedies, light therapy lamps and other wellness products.
The Associated Press found that Means’ pointed attacks against the medical establishment dovetail with the interests of his company, Truemed, which features vendors who are prominent supporters of Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy Again” movement.
Because of his status as a special government employee, Means is exempt from publicly disclosing his financial details, including his personal and business investments.

Meet Joseph Malone, a new appointee of RFK, Jr to ACIP. Malone is among the most notorious of conspiratorial physician quacks, cranks, grifters, pro-spread of contagion & science denying anti-vax activists out there.

Now, along with other members of the anti-vax cabal, he'll be rendering vital advice regarding vaccines.

What makes vaccination ethically complex?

You may not necessarily think about ethics until some ethical question becomes relevant to you.

Generally speaking, ethics comprises the standards of conduct that determine “right” and “wrong” behavior as well as the logical reasoning that justifies our moral judgments

More specifically, ethics examines the moral decisions of individuals, who are not just individuals, but are interacting with each other and with society. Nowhere is that more present than in the question of vaccine hesitancy.

Why are people hesitant to get vaccinated? The answer to this will vary hugely between people, cultures, and regions.

Western societies have a hyper-individualized culture, which is reflected in the issues we emphasize.

For this reason, in Western societies, the single largest issue is the conflict between the freedom of the individual and the responsibility they have to society. That means that, generally, patients are free to delay or reject vaccination.

However, this places others at risk of contracting disease, making the issue of patient autonomy in vaccination decisions unique when compared with other medical decisions.

At #CDIC2025 in Adelaide, I shared some thoughts on why public health is struggling to maintain trust and why better messaging isn’t the answer.

We’re operating in an information environment where people curate their own sources, assess expertise differently, and judge trust based on what they experience, not just what we say. That means we need to change how we do things, not only how we communicate.

I summarized main points I talked about - how public health often gets cropped or blurred out of the frame, how trust is built through consistent action, and why claiming “progress” can sound like paternalism when it doesn’t match people’s lived realities.

It's time we treated trust building as all of our responsibility, not just colleagues working in communications and community engagement.
