"A lot of our healthcare providers are really de-skilled now in being able to answer the complex questions families are asking about vaccine safety...contributing to this loss of trust."
Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) Prof Margie Danchin featured on SiriusXM's Doctor Radio program to discuss an uptick in vaccine hesitancy globally, with one in 10 families not currently trusting vaccine information from their healthcare providers.
Professor Danchin suggested additional training for nurses, doctors and vaccine providers, so concerns or questions from families can be addressed, improving vaccine uptake and restoring trust.

🔴 Measles cases are rising across Europe. This has resulted in several EU countries losing their measles-free status or having measles classified as endemic.
Measles is highly contagious and can lead to serious, even life-threatening complications. The good news? It is preventable. We are working closely with European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and national authorities to support the response to ongoing outbreaks — by strengthening vaccination coverage, promoting sustainable immunisation programmes and securing vaccine supply across Europe.
✅ Two doses of the measles vaccine provide the best protection 👶 Childhood vaccination remains the most effective way to stop transmission 💉 Vaccination protects individuals — and communities We know mixed messages on the benefits of vaccination are circulating; however, all the scientific evidence underpins their safety and efficacy. Your doctor or another health professional can provide you with all the facts. Get vaccinated. Get protected. 👉 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dY-5VyyH #UnitedInProtection

With vaccine hesitancy continuing to erode vaccine confidence globally and put children and families at risk, it was a privilege to meet with midwives, district health officials and parents who are not vaccinating in Indonesia 🇮🇩 to co-design a program to train midwives and nurses to answer questions on vaccine safety and misinformation, starting in pregnancy. We are also focusing on engaging fathers who often make the final decision to vaccinate & are using nudges and reminders to tackle access issues 😀
The pilot will run in Riau, in posyandus in Pekanbaru and Siak to leverage a hybrid trial for evidence on effectiveness, with implementation & cost outcomes to drive practice and policy change to improve immunisation coverage and trust in vaccines 💡
With misinformation swirling globally, recently driven by conflicting advice on schedules and incorrect unscientific advice from the US, we need novel and effective strategies to move the needle on vaccine uptake & trust urgently

Did you know that severe adverse events, such as transverse myelitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, thrombocytopenia, and sudden infant death syndrome, have been reported following Hib vaccination? However, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) states that “the evidence is inadequate to accept or reject a causal relation between Hib vaccines” and those conditions.
Parents, stay informed about the risks of Hib compared to the risks of the Hib vaccine.

Since Elisabeth Wilhelm and I drafted the first version of our chapter on health disinformation for the new European Digital Media Observatory volume, its relevance has only grown.
Health disinformation gets propagated for profit or for social and political influence. The motivations vary, but the tactics tend to exploit the same vulnerabilities in the information environment and in the ways people make sense of risk and uncertainty.
Public health works toward long-term population wellbeing, so it approaches harmful information as a structural challenge that affects trust, equity, and the ability of communities to stay safe. Addressing health disinformation therefore cannot rely on rapid debunking alone. Public health needs to work on durable resilience that includes social and behavior change approaches, strong health communication systems, and support for the many people who form and maintain community trust.
This also matters for climate and One Health challenges. The same conditions that allow health disinformation to spread also shape how people understand climate impacts, zoonotic threats, and environmental change.
Disinformation narratives cut across these domains, which means the solutions must as well. Interdisciplinary work that links public health, SBC, climate communication, and information integrity is essential.
We wrote the chapter as a short public health primer for disinformation researchers and closed with reflections for colleagues who sit at the intersection of health communication and information disorder.
Lis and I explored several of the chapter’s themes during our EDMO training workshop: https://lnkd.in/dAbJdn5a
Thanks to Paula Gori and Lisa Ginsburg for inviting us to contribute to this book: Disinformation: A Multi-Disciplinary Analysis

For the last 6 months, my team and I have spent countless hours analyzing data to answer the question: Are pediatricians getting rich by "pushing vaccines"? (Little did we know this would become even more relevant in light of recent events!)
We pored over the data. We did not realize the extent of the complexity when we started. The reimbursement landscape is a tangled mess of federal programs, state variations, insurance negotiations, and quality metrics that took us months to untangle.
We interviewed pediatricians. Some of them cried talking about the reality of running a practice while trying to keep vaccines available for their patients. One told us about the impossible math of serving kids on Medicaid when the reimbursement doesn't even cover the cost of keeping the lights on.
We dug into the viral claims about bonuses and kickbacks. We traced them back to their sources. What we found was... not what the internet thinks. (Spoiler: pharmaceutical companies DO NOT pay pediatricians. It's actually illegal.)
Shoutout to my incredible team who worked into the wee hours for weeks and months to bring this to life. I am so proud of what we built.
Please read this and share it widely. I am so tired of people vilifying the Mr. Rogers of medicine. Pediatricians are one of the last bastions of trust in healthcare, and that trust is being eroded by baseless claims.
The data tell a very clear story if you actually look.

Do pediatricians make large profits from vaccines? Only last week Texas Attorney General announced a formal investigation into “unlawful financial incentives” for childhood vaccines, claiming “Big Pharma and Big Insurance bribe medical providers to pressure parents.” Eerie timing indeed, as the team at Unbiased Science had just finishing polishing a six-month investigation into that exact question. (spolier alert: no, they don't).

"Once a leading cause of paralysis in children, poliomyelitis—commonly known as polio—is now largely absent from daily life in the U.S. This is a public health success that can be traced directly to vaccination. Polio is a contagious viral disease caused by poliovirus, which can infect cells in the central nervous system, potentially causing paralysis. This was the case for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, who contracted polio in 1921 at the age of 39.
In the early 1900s, polio paralyzed and killed thousands of people—it was one of the most feared diseases in the U.S. But the polio vaccine helped eliminate wild polio in the country. While polio has been eliminated in the U.S., the country remains at risk because the illness has not been globally eradicated. That is why it is important to understand what polio is, how the virus spreads and why polio vaccination remains essential to protecting individuals and public health."

When we talk about public trust in science, who are we actually talking about? 🧬🔬🧪🌾🚀🌏
Recent CSIRO research into Australian public perceptions suggests it’s not a single audience, but a spectrum. Broadly, people tend to fall into four groups: Champions, Supporters, Moderates and Sceptics of science and innovation. Each group brings different expectations, levels of confidence and ways of engaging with scientific knowledge.
What’s striking in this research is that broader societal and scientific mistrust - and that includes of institutions, experts and decision‑makers - is beginning to shape perceptions of science across all four groups. The effects are most pronounced among those typically seen as disengaged or sceptical, but even traditional advocates of science are not immune. Trust can no longer be assumed.
This matters because trust isn’t just about whether people believe the science. It shapes whether science informs decisions, guides behaviour, and delivers benefit. In a world facing complex challenges - from emerging technologies to public health and climate adaptation - science that is trusted, understood and aligned with public values has the power to change the society we live in.
Thank you Dr. Sarah Vivienne Bentley, Emma Schleiger, PhD, Rod McCrea, Rebecca Coates and Elizabeth Hobman for this work.
