Robin Good's curator insight, January 3, 2014 1:28 PM

Gibbon is a new web app which makes it extremely easy to create beautiful-to-look-at learning playlists by simply adding specific article or video links to your custom-made content compilation.

Gibbon actually goes the extra mile by grabbing the full content from each original source you curate, by integrating it into your learning playlist, and by stripping out of any design distractions it may have been accompanied by.

Learning playlists can be easily edited, arranged and shared with others.

Gibbon offers a wonderful and elegant design, providing a clutter-free, elegant and very effective way to present and organize content lists.

Furthermore Gibbon adds a few specific touches that make this curation tool particularly fit for learning a topic, by providing reading time estimates for each link in a list, striking out titles of completed readings, highlighting with simple icons the type of content showcased (articles, video, etc.), and creating a focused and distraction-free reading environment.

My comment: Gibbon looks very promising to me, as it attempts not to be another generic curation tool but addresses a very specific need and application while providing a very well designed and usable tool.

Notwithstanding the beauty and simplicity of the UI I felt the need for an integrated search tool that would facilitate me in grabbing those content items I wanted to add into a learning playlist.

I also had several problems in trying to add new content to my test playlist. New URLs would "time out" easily while being fetched and all of the content added via the bookmarklet or the Google extension didn't show up in my collection.

A very promising tool to effectively curate content learning playlists.

Free to use.

Curation: How to Find New Competitive Knowledge in Social Media

Curation: How to Find New Competitive Knowledge in Social Media | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Buzz used to be an intangible — something you just felt. No longer.

===> Look for online "curators." Experts who collect and share "best of" resources on specific subjects are analogous to museum curators who carefully choose which pieces to display. <===

In social media, curators do a good job of keeping track of people's conversations as they occur in online social spaces and quickly channeling that information, in some cases using tools such as Storify to distill conversations.

For example, the World Economic Forum in Davos uses Storify to put together summaries of its events. Canadian financial cooperative Desjardins wanted to learn about new electronic currencies, so it tracked a UK community dedicated to crowdfunding and sought experts in Africa on mobile-payment practices. The company prefers such information-gathering methods to relying on market-research firms.

===> If you can find the right set of curators to follow, you can reduce your reliance on searches of traditional databases and publications. <===

Stop knocking curation

Stop knocking curation | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
It’s an important, and undervalued, journalistic skill

Information overload drives content consumers to look for human-filtered, journalist-vetted, intellectually-related material. This hunger for coherence isn’t unreasonable; it’s essential. And for some of us who think and write every day, gathering bits of thread that can then be elegantly knit into a thoughtful narrative isn’t cheating, or lazy. Far from it. Curating is in many ways harder than writing (at least good curating). It’s far easier for me to write 500 words from my head than to find themes and sources and tie them into a broader narrative.

Simply put, content curation is the process of curating relevant and interesting content from various sources on the web and putting them together and publishing them on a personal site or blog. As a result of the popularity of the content curation process, a number of content marketing tools have been introduced. Another angle is to look at the iPad as a device to learn. It’s already had a huge impact on education with digital textbooks and connectivity to the Internet’s knowledge. Thanks to Alan Berkson intelligent use of hashtags as he retweeted his own post dating back to December 2012, and to Trendspottr, who made it easy for me to discover it, I have just run into one of the most inspirational short posts about curation that I have read in some time.

The post is quite short, but it packs such an important truth, that I can't but bring it to you in its full integrity.

"Being able to properly vet might be the most important skill of the 21st Century.

Not curing sick animals.

Not retiring from military service.

I’m talking about “subjecting to thorough examination or evaluation.

We’ve been trained to rely on experts to do this for us.

If we go back 30 years or so, we would find experts in a limited number of places: academia, government and non-government organizations, and major corporations including media. As I wrote in The Age of Thought Leadership:

“…the Information Age is allowing experts to step out from behind the veil of a corporate (or academic) entity…”

This is a double-edged sword. As individuals we can develop and express thought leadership. However, also as individuals, we can no longer solely rely on third parties for pre-vetting our experts.

  • Learn how to do research.

  • Know the difference between a primary and a secondary source.

  • Become more discerning in your content consumption.

  • Develop a healthy level of skepticism."

Content curation, if intended as the art of helping other people discover, learn and make sense of things they are interested into, is all about cultivating your own ability to become an expert by honing the skills of research, vetting and contextualization.

This is it. Must read. Must share. 10/10

Learning to Be a Leader: Leaders Must Be Curators

Learning to Be a Leader: Leaders Must Be Curators | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Wikipedia describes Digital curation as

...the selection, preservation, maintenance, collection and archiving of digital assets. Digital curation establishes, maintains and adds value to repositories of digital data for present and future use. This is often accomplished by archivists, librarians, scientists, historians, and scholars. The term curation in the past commonly referred to museum and library professionals. It has since been applied to interaction with social media including compiling digital images, web links and movie files.

Curation as a teacher is vital. Curation as a administrator is vital. Curation as a leader is vital. Curation as a life-long learner is vital. Curation helps us interact with the resources available; it helps us categorize, organize, and share resources with others. In curating resources we learn, grow, and contribute to our professional and personal learning networks in a hugely beneficial capacity that is only outmatched by the reciprocity it produces if done using social media like Diigo, Twitter, blogs, etc.
