The Innovator's Mindset: Envisioning the Future

The Innovator's Mindset: Envisioning the Future | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Innovation is everyone's great desire. We worship innovation. Entrepreneurs embrace it. Careers are made on it. Companies compete over it. The challenge is we may not all be talking about the same thing.

The innovator's mindset embraces these ten strategies I have found in my research:
1. Bring value and meaning that is clearly unique.
2. Create a culture of inventing that others can build on.
3. Move with velocity to embrace the new.
4. Have the courage to create.
5. Disrupt yourself before others do.
6. If you don't have passion about an idea, don't do it.
7. Change something to make it better, bring the value.
8. Monetizing innovation is called success.
9. People do the innovating.
10. Decide what mountain top you want to own, then go for it.

Technology in Education - I chose this resource because I feel it is important for schools to be involved in teaching students how to respect themselves and others when using online resources especially social media.  I am hoping to use this as a lesson in my advising class to teach students how to use proper online etiquette and for them to truly understand the impact online issues can have on people's lives.

Emerging Thoughts | Growth Mindset

Emerging Thoughts | Growth Mindset | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Carol Dweck’s work in this regard speaks volumes about the power of belief. If students believe they can be successful, they will be. If teachers believe they have the power to influence student learning outcomes, then they can make a positive impact on their learning. It’s interesting how a rather simplistic concept has garnered so much attention in the world of education. Educators here and everywhere are humming this new buzzword triumphantly as the catch-all phrase of the 21st century. But is it really that new?

The power of positivity has been around for years. Everyone knows that having a positive attitude is a prerequisite for overcoming obstacles. So why the big buzz? Dweck’s work is now backed by research in the field of education, that’s why. The research indicated that students with fixed mindsets did not perform as well as students with a growth mindset. So it begs the question, how do we, as educators, foster a growth mindset amongst our students?

Silvia Meza's curator insight, October 3, 2015 9:32 AM

Why build a Personal Learning Network?

Why build a Personal Learning Network? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Time spent developing your Personal Learning Network is time well spent but it does take time. The danger busy teachers face is in becoming so engrossed in dealing with the day to day business of teaching that we make poor choices when it comes to time spent on our personal learning. We manage to find time for our students, for phone calls home, for report writing and programming all the while letting our engagement with learning slip down the list of things to do. Ensuring your personal learning is a priority is essential and should be seen against the value it brings to your students; enhance your teaching and you enhance their learning.

Munro, Hopkins and Craig recognise this when they state ‘Student outcomes depend on the teaching in the school, its pedagogic capital’. For you, your school and most importantly your students time invested in building a Personal Learning Network is time spent developing your pedagogic capital

A great article ensuring that Educators make time to continually invest time into their own learning practices. Information is always changing, being updated,  being expanded, or being debated, so educators need to be aware of these adjustments. By analysing their knowledge and beliefs on certain topics and researching other perspectives educators will show growth and critical thinking in their own learning strategies.

What is Coaching? | Classroom Coaches | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

What is Coaching?

Over 2,400 years ago, at the height of the Athenian enlightenment, Socrates asserted that teachers should help students to uncover information for themselves. This was a radical departure from the traditional approach of the time, which thought of students as empty vessels and of teachers as dispensers of information. The Socratic philosophy of teaching set the stage for coaching, which aims to unlock and increase potential and learning.

Whether a coach is helping a teacher improve, or a teacher is using the same skills with students in the classroom, coaching allows for a constructionist theory of education. This allows for the individuals to create strategies for themselves.

The Goal of Coaching

Coaching is concerned with long-term skill development rather than with quick fixes or temporary understanding. We define coaches as those who offer inspiration, guidance, training, and modeling, and who enhance others’ abilities through motivation and support (Longenecker & Pinkel, 1997). The goal of a coach is to increase achievement by helping someone:

  • Find their inner strengths and passions in order to nurture self-worth and identity,
  • Have a voice in their own learning and negotiate collectively with the instructor to create the goals and objectives,
  • Passionately engage in talking content to increase memory retention and fuel motivation to learn, and,
  • Use their inner talents to bring their work to the highest level of scholarship attainable.

What is your PKM routine? | LEARNing To LEARN | eSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The most important aspect of PKM is that it is personal. In order to stick with a routine over time, people have to find what works for them. Blogging has been a core part of my sense-making routine over the past decade. When I conduct workshops, my primary aim is help others discover what works for them. I do not have a secret formula, only some general guidelines developed through experience, plus a lot of ideas and suggested areas to explore.

My colleague Jane Hart shared her daily PKM routine recently and it’s different from mine, which of course it should be.

Tamie Douglas's curator insight, October 1, 2015 1:33 AM

With the amount of different types of digital resources, websites and technologies, it is no wonder educators can be intimidated at the thought of introducing them into their classrooms. Building on their PKM is critical in staying relatively up-to-date with technology, devices, applications, blogs or blogging and websites. Developing a preference is only natural and will allow educators to be become more confident and knowledgable in a few of these technologies and delve deeper into their uses and capabilities, instead of just 'scratching the surface' of many.

In the New Wild West, a Computer May Be More Dangerous Than a Gun | ICT | CyberSecurity | Awareness | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

We’re at the Wild West stage of the Internet: the pioneers have come and gone, the big operators are building their mines and ranches, and now comes the plague of carpetbaggers. Just as children once grew up surrounded by guns, but somehow managed to survive, our children now are growing up in the mine-strewn trench warfare landscape of the Internet. It can in fact be navigated with some degree of safety, but not by the incautious.

It falls to us – whether we are teachers, parents or security engineers – to bring up the next generation with some hope of survival. The challenge is to simultaneously encourage exploration and enforce security, or if that’s not available, at least some degree of safety. Our culture weathered the frontier era more or less successfully, so I’m inclined to believe we can deal with the threats of the Internet. The challenge is to do it with minimal damage.
