How Lifelong Learning and a Growth Mindset Can Propel Your Career

Many people believe once they’ve earned all the degrees needed for their dream job, their learning days are over. This is a dangerous way to manage a career, because technologies and business models emerge and force change so rapidly.
The pace of change is accelerating, and to succeed in any industry, and to be ready to participate in the next evolution of it, professionals must adopt habits and practices that empower lifelong learning.

One challenge to lifelong learning is that many people assume they are not capable of it or not good at it. We tell ourselves, I’m not a math person. I don’t get code. Writing is not my strong suit. Remarks like this may mask a feeling that learning itself is beyond our grasp.

Lifelong learning never happens without a healthy dose of personal grit. A short, but powerful word, grit means persevering in the face of challenges and adversity. Gritty individuals are motivated to overcome those obstacles — whether in their personal or professional lives.

Maker education is currently a major trend in education. But just saying that one is doing Maker Education really doesn't define the teaching practices that an educator is using to facilitate it. 20+ Books About Self-Directed Learning | Autodidact | Heutagogy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

I remain delighted to see growing interest in self-directed learning. A decade ago, if I would mention self-directed learning in a presentation, it evoked little to no reaction. Today I talk about it and people lean forward, curious and seeking how to nurture the traits of the self-directed learning in their students. They gather afterward to learn more or to share their own passion and experience with it.

This article offers a list of 20+ books about self-directed learning that promise to give anyone a solid foundation from which to explore the subject.

Watch this space for chapter and verse, as we will soon be publishing case studies of several recent programmes that feature high levels of learner self-direction.

Learners are changing, learning is changing – and heutagogy can give important clues about rebalancing the burden of responsibilities and permissions in an always-on, networked, instructorless, post-course world.

Seven Laws of the Self-directed Learner | Andragogy | Heutagogy | eSkills

Seven Laws of the Self-directed Learner | Andragogy | Heutagogy | eSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Dr. Bernard Bull is Assistant Vice President of Academics for Continuing and Distance Education & Associate Professor of Education at Concordia University Wisconsin.

In 1888, John Milton Gregory published The Seven Laws of Teaching, providing instruction on what contributes to being an effective teacher.  While this list is over a hundred years old, most readers today will resonate with this list of laws. This is one of a dozen or so books that I try to read each year.  It is a short read that one can usually finish in a few hours.  As I picked up the book to read again today, I started to think about these laws in terms of self-directed learning, rewriting the laws from a self-directed learning perspective (which, by the way, fits nicely with law #7).

Below is the original list of “elements” from which Gregory devised his seven laws.  Using these as a starting point, I revised them to create the seven elements of a self-directed learner, adding one additional item that did not seem to have adequate emphasis in Gregory’s original list (although it is embedded within several of them).

This could be helpful for an educator as a checklist when developing a lesson plan to ensure that the way the lesson is set out and implemented builds on a students ability to a become self directed learner.

The Importance of Andragogy in Education | LEARNing To LEARN

The Importance of Andragogy in Education | LEARNing To LEARN | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

As educators one would expect that teachers and teacher/administrators should be experts on the best most effective and efficient methods of getting large groups of children to

understand, learn, and use information responsibly to create more information. Theoretically, these educators have an understanding of pedagogy and methodology in order to accomplish these goals. I firmly believe most educators have these very skills to accomplish this with kids.

A question that haunts me however, at almost any education conference that I attend is: Why are so many (not all) of these educators, who are so skilled in a classroom of kids, so bad at teaching in a room full of adults for professional development?

According to an article, “Adult Learning Theory and Principles” from The Clinical Educator’s Resource Kit, Malcolm Knowles, an American practitioner and theorist of adult education, defined andragogy as “the art and science of helping adults learn”.

Knowles identified the six principles of adult learning as:

  • Adults are internally motivated and self-directed
  • Adults bring life experiences and knowledge to learning experiences
  • Adults are goal oriented
  • Adults are relevancy oriented
  • Adults are practical
  • Adult learners like to be respected

Florence Gilzene-Cheese's curator insight, April 13, 2015 5:57 PM

This article raises an important question. Why do many educators struggle with engagement and metacognition when presenting to peers? As I read the article, I had my own question. Could we be so pumped to share knowledge that we forget that engagement matters or is it that we really fail to apply the strategies we know and love with our colleagues? I have no answers but I invite reflection and comments

Nocking The Arrow: Self-Directed vs. Self-Determined Learning; What's the Difference?

Nocking The Arrow: Self-Directed vs. Self-Determined Learning; What's the Difference? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

In this age of abundance of information, shifting classroom pedagogy isn't nearly enough to make learning in school more relevant and authentic for the learner. Self-directed learning (andragogy), and self-determined learning (heutagogy) are the ideals necessary in making students "future ready" to live and learn in a web connected world.

While original research applied these concepts to mature learners, it has become apparent that even young children have an abundant capacity for recognizing and directing their own learning. Anyone who has observed toddlers learning how to walk and talk understand the motivation and skill development that quickly develops during these processes.

Considered by some to be on a learning continuum, self-directed learning and self-determined learning have at least one distinct difference. What is this difference, and why should educators care? - See more at: http://rtschuetz.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/self-directed-vs-self-determined.html?spref=tw#sthash.oSVChVeN.dpuf

Great insights- this can be applied to other fields as well such as learning techniques to modulate stress and anxiety

Shafeeq Husain's curator insight, February 3, 2015 8:59 PM

Since "upwards of ninety percent of our learning will occur outside formal educational settings" (Jennings, 2010), in the age of abundance of information, students should be motivated to reflect on how they are learning. That is what is self-directed learning

Interesting idea for ePortfolio pedagogy.  Maybe the idea is to consider andragogy and heutagogy as distinct from pedagogy, or at least an evolution from it.
