Where to start? I propose to work with system when WE use strip-boards; thus meaning: preparing them ALL the same way. Any electronics project will need a power supply, so WE will start with the power supply which will mostly be a 9 Volt battery. WE will use the outside strips to connect…

Next Generation of Online Education: “Learn by Doing” in a Digital World

Next Generation of Online Education: “Learn by Doing” in a Digital World | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Shifting to “Learn by Doing”

Becker of NMC says just as the role of the teacher is switching from “sage on the stage” to one of a coach or guide, there is a shift from rote to active learning. To foster skills of teamwork and collaboration, online education is incorporating group projects and hands-on labs to help students think more critically and retain the content.

Building on the concept of “learn by doing,” online education is expanding to connect students from around the world to learn together and meet professionals. Morris is also executive director of the Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration, which partners with more than 200 cultural organizations, such as art museums, to offer real-time interaction with experts in various fields.

This exposure can help answer student questions about the relevance of a geometry class, for instance. “To answer the questions of why you are doing it is key,” says Morris. “[Students] are motivated when they understand and have a reason to understand the material.”

Why the Fastest Learners are always busy | quick learners are insatiable learners-#LifeLongLEARNing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Quick learners do not learn faster because they know some secret way of learning. In today's world we are all looking for the quick fix, for the easy solution and the fast way to get to what we want.

We get everything we desire instantly. Movies are on demand, TV shows can be watched for hours on end, and even products are delivered right to your front door.

Expecting the same thing for acquiring knowledge does not work. What "quick" learners do instead is they continue to work above and beyond what the rest of us do. Below I have listed some differences between quick learners vs. normal learners.

Putting students in charge of their learning transforms a small rural district | #LEARNing2LEARN

Putting students in charge of their learning transforms a small rural district | #LEARNing2LEARN  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The walls tell the story at Lindsay Unified. In every classroom – from kindergarten through 12th grade – each student’s name is on a list on the wall that shows what students have learned and what they need to do next for every topic they are studying. After checking the list each day, students get to work, with no need for prompting from their teachers.

This small rural district in Tulare County has embraced “performance-based learning,” which breaks down the way classrooms are traditionally structured so that students can work independently, with teachers providing individualized support. Lindsay is part of a growing national movement, with more schools embracing the concept of students working at their own pace, being in charge of their own learning and advancing only when they can show they understand the material.

We have to teach kids to not be passive in their learning,” said Lindsay Unified Superintendent Thomas Rooney.

Marla Ernest, who teaches English language development at Lindsay High, said: “You never hear a kid say, ‘I’m failing a class.’ They always feel they are working toward proficiency. If they’re not on pace, they figure out what to do to catch up.”

Students should knit, paint and cook to ward off stress and depression, experts say | #Research #Creativity #EQ | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Researchers from the University of Otago, New Zealand, wanted to find out if engaging in normal creative acts make people feel better. An analysis of the information found a pattern of more enthusiasm and higher ‘flourishing’ following days when the undergraduates were more creative.

Study author Dr Tamlin Conner said: ‘There is growing recognition in psychology research that creativity is associated with emotional functioning.

‘However, most of this work focuses on how emotions benefit or hamper creativity, not whether creativity benefits or hampers emotional wellbeing.’

Studying With Quizzes Helps Make Sure the Material Sticks

Studying With Quizzes Helps Make Sure the Material Sticks | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
This phenomenon — testing yourself on an idea or concept to help you remember it — is called the “testing effect” or “retrieval practice.” People have known about the idea for centuries. Sir Francis Bacon mentioned it, as did the psychologist William James. In 350 BCE, Aristotle wrote that “exercise in repeatedly recalling a thing strengthens the memory.”

But the testing effect had been mostly overlooked in recent years. “What psychologists interested in learning and memory have always emphasized is the acquisition part. The taking [information] in and getting it into memory,” Roediger said.

Laypeople — and even experts — tend to think of human memory as a box to be packed with information.

“Memory is dynamic, and it keeps changing,” McDaniel said. “And retrieval helps it change.”

Developing Empathy

Framework

When we put ourselves in another person’s shoes, we are often more sensitive to what that person is experiencing and are less likely to tease or bully them. By explicitly teaching students to be more conscious of other people’s feelings, we can create a more accepting and respectful school community.

Additional Resources

  • Happy Faces encourages students to show empathy to classmates having a bad day.

4 Secrets to Learning Anything, According to Neuroscience

4 Secrets to Learning Anything, According to Neuroscience | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The future of work is all about innovation and agility. We have to be prepared for ever-changing circumstances, and that means being open to learning new things.

Learning is no longer something we just do in schools. We can't rely on just the skillset we knew when we entered the workforce--that will guarantee career stagnation.

NLI has recently been exploring how to make ideas stick. Through their research, they created a model outlining four key conditions for effective learning: Attention, Generation, Emotion and Spacing (AGES).

Here's a quick overview of the AGES model:

Attention: When you learn, maintain a single focus having complete and undivided attention.

Generation: Listening isn't enough. Heighten the likelihood of memory retention by doing something with the information you're learning. Create a situation that will make this information meaningful.

Emotion: Strong emotions lead to strong memories. Look for ways to build an emotional connection to what you're learning.

Spacing: In order to grow memory, you need a break in between learning.
