Preparing for the Future: Learning Activities

Preparing for the Future: Learning Activities | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

The World Economic Forum shared the Future of Jobs report in 2018 that provided a list of the growing skills for 2022. Here are the top 10:

- Analytical thinking and innovation
- Active learning and learning strategies
- Creativity, originality, and initiative
- Technology design and programming
- Critical thinking and analysis
- Complex problem-solving
- Leadership and social influence
- Emotional intelligence
- Reasoning, problem-solving, and ideation
- Systems analysis and evaluation

If we look at these 10 skill areas, what types of learning experiences or learning spaces can we create for our students that can address most if not all of them? Looking at these skills individually and thinking about the nature of our work, it can seem overwhelming. However, there are some simple ways to create a space where students can build all of these skills and more.

Here are six ideas to try that can help to address these skills:

1. Project-based Learning (PBL)

2. Coding

3. STEAM and Makerspaces

4. Place-based

5. Genius Hour

6. Student-Led PD or Teacher for a Day

FISh - a model for individual, pair and PBL group inquiry

FISh - a model for individual, pair and PBL group inquiry | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

"Within the framework of a Problem-Based Learning approach a simplified model for inquiry, called FISh, has been developed (Nerantzi and Uhlin, 2012). We suggest the use of FISh when working collaboratively with inquiry into scenarios in each topic. Even if you learn autonomously or with a learning buddy, FISh might help you as a structure for your learning process. However, remember that learning is messy and following or restricting yourself to a linear process might not work and can be frustrating at times."

I have registered for The Open Learning Network MOOC #OLN151 which has commenced today, 14 April. The design of this open course uses a  wonderfully simplified approach to PBL inquiry called FISh (Nerantzi and Uhlin, 2012).

Take a look a the #OLN151 webpage to read about the three step FISh approach - FOCUS, INVESTIGATE and SHARE - each step driven by guiding questions. Really nice approach to apply in your own learning design for students.

"Step 1: Focus

What do I/we see?

How do I/we understand what we see?

What do I/we need to find out more about?

Specify learning issues/intended learning outcomes!

Step 2: Investigate

How and where am I/are we going to find answers?

What will I do/who will do what and by when?

What main findings and solutions do I/we propose?

Step 3: Share

How am I/are we going to present my/our findings?

What do I/we want to share with the community?

How can I/we provide feedback to others?

What reflections do I have about my learning (and working with others)?"

Think about the jobs in today’s economy — the ones we’re supposed to prepare students for after graduation. Are employees evaluated using bubble-in tests to prove they know the ins and outs of their job? Do they learn and use new skills one at a time in a vacuum? The questions sound a bit silly until you realize too often that’s what students take away from their education. Why is the culture to drill facts into students’ heads just to pass a test?

Just like in the real world, my students show what they can do through projects, teamwork, and research. Is it working? Well, according to state science exams, my students consistently score higher than other science classes in my district.

I’ve never been a big believer in teaching to a test. Indeed, since my first year in the classroom I’ve used a project-based model with my science and social studies classes. On the first day of school I issue my fifth-graders a PASSPORT (which stands for Preparing All Students for Success by Participating in an Ongoing Real-world simulation using Technology) and explain that their yearlong adventure to “Johnsonville” starts today. The school year is a simulation of adulthood where students work, create, and learn about personal finance and entrepreneurial skills. They experience real-world situations and gain insights into global affairs. Students tend to view my classroom less as a “classroom” and more of an interactive city where all projects intertwine to create an ecosystem of businesses and homes.

We are wired to connect what we are doing and where we are to other things we know. It is a survival thing - this means that real world learning has an easier time embedding in our brain and is connected to more parts of our brain - so will stay longer. Learning is easier when it comes "stamped' in time and space and context and relevance.
