#highereducation #chinaeurope #businesseducation #internationaleducation #lifelonglearning #employability #demographicchange | Raphael Lissillour | Wuhan, Hubei | Scoop.it
A fall of 450,000 candidates sounds dramatic. But the real warning for universities is not the decline in 2026: it is what it reveals about the changing value of a degree.

China recorded 12.9 million registrations for the 2026 gaokao, 450,000 fewer than in 2025 and the second consecutive annual decline. A recent analysis by China Education Online (https://lnkd.in/eqn2ZFT5) attributes this fall to three main factors: a smaller combined intake into general and vocational secondary education in 2023, fewer students repeating the examination, and more vocational-school graduates choosing employment rather than immediately pursuing a higher qualification.

The analysis does not interpret this as the beginning of China’s demographic collapse in higher education. It expects candidate numbers to fluctuate and potentially continue growing until around 2034, before the effects of lower birth rates produce a much more pronounced decline. This is an analytical forecast rather than an official government projection, but its strategic message deserves attention.

For European universities and business schools, I see four implications:

1. Plan on two time horizons.
China will remain one of the world’s largest higher-education markets for years. However, institutions should use the current window to prepare for a future in which demographic growth can no longer compensate for weak positioning or undifferentiated programmes.

2. Demonstrate the value of the degree.
The weakening of what the article calls “diploma worship” suggests that learners are becoming more attentive to employment outcomes. Curricula must therefore connect academic knowledge with professional capabilities, industry needs and credible career pathways.

3. Place lifelong learning at the centre.
Students who enter employment directly may return to education later. Stackable qualifications, executive programmes, professional master’s degrees and flexible work-compatible formats will become increasingly important.

4. Move from recruitment volume to partnership value.
A sustainable China strategy should not depend only on attracting large cohorts into imported programmes. European institutions need deeper cooperation with Chinese universities, employers and regional ecosystems to co-develop relevant knowledge and capabilities.

Demographic pressure does not begin when the number of students collapses. It begins when learners start questioning whether a degree is worth the time, cost and opportunity it requires: universities will increasingly compete not simply for students, but for confidence in the relevance of what they teach.

Are European universities and business schools redesigning their China strategies early enough? or waiting until the demographic decline becomes impossible to ignore?

I lost a deal in China I should have won.
Not because my numbers were wrong.
But because I didn't know what commitment meant to the people sitting across from me.

My deck was solid. My projections were clean. I walked in with KPIs and exit timelines.
They were operating on a completely different clock.

Thirteen years on the ground taught me what I missed.
Every Chinese middle school student memorises this line until it becomes instinct:

鞠躬尽瘁,死而后已
"I will give my utmost, even unto my dying day."

Zhuge Liang wrote those words in 227 AD before marching into a campaign he knew he might lose. Not for glory. Because he could not walk away from duty.

For nearly 1,800 years, those words have been compulsory curriculum. Memorised. Examined. Carried into every boardroom.

Me presenting the exit strategy signalled I was temporary. Their entire cultural wiring was searching for someone who would stay for life.

My rush to close read as impatience. They saw someone who would abandon ship when things got hard.

My obsession with data missed the point entirely. You cannot quantify moral weight. I offered spreadsheets. They were waiting for me to show my heart.

Culture is not the backdrop to a negotiation. Culture is the negotiation.

China’s adult obesity rate rose from 20 percent in 1992 to over 50 percent in 2025. Rapid urbanization and the modern food industry have transformed daily life, with more people in sedentary office jobs and diets shifting from whole grains and vegetables toward meat, processed foods, and other calorie-dense options. With the rising economic toll and a changing understanding of the issue, the Healthy Weight Management Action was launched as part of the Healthy China campaign to build a supportive environment for weight control by 2030. Digital platforms are also turning weight loss into a game of goals, check-ins, and rewards.
