Skills and Strategies | Annotating to Engage, Analyze, Connect and Create :: NY Times Learning Network :: Jeremy Dean & Katherine Schulten

Skills and Strategies | Annotating to Engage, Analyze, Connect and Create :: NY Times Learning Network :: Jeremy Dean & Katherine Schulten | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it

“Digital annotation is close reading 2.0. Through the visualization of the process of highlighting and noting words, phrases and sentences, students are forced to keep their thinking and writing “close” to the text and its evidence. And, when done with others, students can create what feels like a social network for close reading — a way of working many find much more engaging than individual analog annotation.”

. . .

“A third option is the free web annotation tool developed by the nonprofit Hypothesis. It shares much of the same functionality as Genius and Diigo — it’s predominantly a browser extension, and it too offers private groups — but unlike the other two, it is both open source and, like the web itself, based on open standards. It also has an education department focused on supporting teachers and students using the service.”

Start Writing Fiction - The Open University

Start Writing Fiction - The Open University | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
Start Writing Fiction focuses on a skill which is central to the writing of all stories and novels – creating characters.

You will listen to established writers, such as Louis de Bernières, Patricia Duncker, Alex Garland, Abdulrazak Gurnah, Tim Pears, Michèle Roberts and Monique Roffey, talk about how they started writing. You’ll consider the rituals of writing and the importance of keeping a journal.

You’ll learn how to develop your ideas and the importance of reflecting on writing and editing, and you’ll hear other writers talking about their approaches to research and consider ways of turning events into a plot.

You’ll also have the opportunity to review and comment on the work of fellow writers, and receive peer feedback on your own story, learning the importance of reading as a writer and how to receive and respond to feedback.

How To Add Rigor To Anything :: Teach Thought :: Terry Heick | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
Several common classroom tasks are inherently rigorous, including reading idea-dense literature, taking notes, and using the writing process itself, but these are rarely engaging, and don’t always fit with a given academic standard or task. But the following 10 strategies can be used to add rigor to almost anything.

Teaching literature with Raspberry Pi - Raspberry Pi

Teaching literature with Raspberry Pi - Raspberry Pi | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
Last week, checking out posts people had made on our Facebook page and the projects they were telling us about, one in particular caught my attention. Sarah Roman, a high school English teacher from New Jersey, had written:

Our English class is going to be using the Raspberry Pi in order to build book-based video games, incorporating Scratch, Sonic Pi, and Python. The students are incredibly excited […]

There was a link to an Indiegogo campaign; we love to see Raspberry Pi used creatively outside of computing lessons, so I clicked on it. A minute of video opened with the title “English Classroom”, but it didn’t look like my high school English lessons. Students work around computers, ignoring the camera as they concentrate intently on… wait, is that Minecraft?

The Digital Writing Process

The Digital Writing Process | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it

"Now, with nearly 20 years of middle and high school teaching behind me, I still respect the writing process approach and its benefits. I also recognize that the nature of writing has changed tremendously over those two decades due to the significant influence of digital tools and sources. Of course, today’s composers still must meet the commonly accepted conventions of the genre in which they are engaged, but our visual digital culture creates different demands than did the primarily print text-based world."

Digital Communication Students's curator insight, December 4, 2015 7:00 AM

"The nature of writing has changed tremendously over those two decades due to the significant influence of digital tools and sources". We completely agree with this phrase. Our way of writing is changing more than we notice. I figure that adults notice this more than young people, because this last group were born with the Internet. Nevertheless, its very important to learn how to write properly, this article provides the tools and the practice we need.

The Big List of Class Discussion Strategies :: Jennifer Gonzalez

The Big List of Class Discussion Strategies :: Jennifer Gonzalez | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
So here they are: 15 formats for structuring a class discussion to make it more engaging, more organized, more equitable, and more academically challenging. If you’ve struggled to find effective ways to develop students’ speaking and listening skills, this is your lucky day.

I’ve separated the strategies into three groups. The first batch contains the higher-prep strategies, formats that require teachers to do some planning or gathering of materials ahead of time. Next come the low-prep strategies, which can be used on the fly when you have a few extra minutes or just want your students to get more active. Note that these are not strict categories; it’s certainly possible to simplify or add more meat to any of these structures and still make them work. The last group is the ongoing strategies. These are smaller techniques that can be integrated with other instructional strategies and don’t really stand alone. For each strategy, you’ll find a list of other names it sometimes goes by, a description of its basic structure, and an explanation of variations that exist, if any. To watch each strategy in action, click on its name and a new window will open with a video that demonstrates it.

How to Write a Better How-To Article In 10 Easy Steps ^ BlogHer ^ by Elan Morgan

How to Write a Better How-To Article In 10 Easy Steps ^ BlogHer ^ by Elan Morgan | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
Trying to follow the instructions in how-tos is not only a test of one's patience but also of one's faith in objective reality, because how-to authors' instructions and examples often miss several steps or seem to bear little relation to the goal you thought the article was supposed to address.

There are a number of reasons that so many how-to articles end up being relatively useless. Sometimes the person writing the how-to is so familiar with the process that they neglect to include the smaller steps in between larger ones. Sometimes the writer assumes her audience knows more than it actually does. And sometimes an author is not actually the expert she claims to be and has just cobbled together a shoddy collage of other how-tos to fulfill the needs of a writing assignment.

No matter what the reasons are for a bad how-to article, though, the pain and suffering caused are real.

Jim Lerman's insight:

Quite a helpful piece; especially for those who have to do this often. A great writing assignment and it also leads directly to how to make flow charts.
